davieG Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 There's nothing wrong with being influenced by advertising in the sense that it draws your attention to a potential supplier but I'd like to think it's influence on me is minimal. For a start I dislike clothes with the brand name visible on them and avoid buying them so that certainly works against them but I guess I'm a drop in the ocean. I've got into the habit of regularly checking the value I get from my services and I'm quite happy to change from one to the other. I rarely if ever buy food endorsed by some celebrity chefs name on it. I take the view that if something is heavily branded or celebrity endorsed/advertised then that costs money which I don't want to pay for.
Guest Electric Yetis Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 I have an unhealthy interest for all things business related, so I wanted to start this thread to find out a few things really.Mainly: What are your favourite Brands and why. Most people base there favourites on many different factors, such as the ethics of the brand and the looks of the brand and the products they sell. My personal favourites are the likes of Red Bull and Coca Cola for their clever marketing. Some me feel another favourite of mine, Vision Express is a strange choice but it is down to their clean look and excellent customer service. My favourite Alcohol brand is Jack Daniels, due to the history of the brand and the taste and smell of its product(s). This may seem a little strange but I hope to use this information one day. I know it will mainly appeal to those with an interest for business and marketing but I hope everyone can get involved. Cheers. Alex. Feel free to post images aswell to illustrate your choice. Surely this is a joke, having been a Vision Express customer for a number of years their customer service is nigh on awful. The only thing stopping me going elsewhere is pure lazyness.
Tommy G Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Nike - their adverts are pretty good on TV. Especially the ones in the past when the had footie players doing some skills n' shit. Now they have Rooney shaving his hair and shouting. Bit of a comedown.
Jon the Hat Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Ha. No-one can escape, even DavieG... They problem being if you make a choice to buy something unbranded, you are falling into the trap of the "deliberately unbranded product" manufacturer, who makes you believe you get more value becuase it is not some major brand. Oh yes. Apple are the ultimate branding champions. They produce products which technologically are no better and sometimes considerably inferior to competitors, but they make it look so damn good, and align thhe styling with some incredible concept products and hence can flog masses of product at premium prices, off the back of a few exceptional products. Nice. I love them
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Microsoft for me. Fantastic advertising made them the no 1 brand in their field. Also intel. Blew apple macs away in the late 70's early 80's with far better advertising campaigns and back scratching deals with giant corporations even though the products were inferior.

Nice. I love them Well I didn't say I never bought branded stuff only clothes with the brand clearly visible although i do have an LCFC branded coat which my son bought me. I buy plenty of branded stuff but through choice and after looking at the alternatives. If I'm stuck for which is the best value and one has been heavily endorsed by some celebrity then there's I good chance I'll pick the other mainly because I find it patronising.
AjcW Posted 28 September 2009 Author Posted 28 September 2009 I just wanted to say thanks for all the responses, this is the sort of thing I wanted, especially the views that branding is bad. Im looking to get into marketing and advertising as a career and accept both views that branding can be both good and bad depending on how you look at it.
ozleicester Posted 29 September 2009 Posted 29 September 2009 the concept of buying non branded just for the sake of it, is equally bad to buying branded, it is about making a decision based not on your own research and intelligence. Branding has its place and can be very valuable, for example i know that when i buy a coke, it will taste like x, wherever in the world i buy it. I can also get a guide on the cost of living based on the price of a coke or a big mac. However if you buy, simply because it has a name on it and you pay MORE because of it, without investigating if you are getting anymore for it. eg, Nike, Addidas etc are all made in China/Taiwan now, would you buy a pair or "Taicangs" for the same price? They were made by the same people, in the same factory..but you can get them for 1/10th the price oh and your mates wont tell you how cool you are. branding is useful...until you are being sucked in by it.
