I think it's safe to say that this idea is well and truly scrapped if not forever then at least for the next 10 years.

I have my Student ID card!! Seriously though, daft idea, it won't make the UK a safer place!!!

:@ Whingy rant follows... turn off now to avoid.

Fight the machine!

The ID card is irrelevant anyway, yesterday evening whilst driving the streets of that hotbed of fear and terrorism (Perth, West OZ). I looked in my rear view mirror to see the flashing lights of the local constabulary, of course immediate concerns of... speeding..not indicating... not stopping at stop signs etc all ran through my head (not to mention the concern about the laptop containing all of the world domination plans put together by the supreme being Bellend Sebastion).

Upon pulling over safely to a side street i watched as the awesome sight of the thin blue line strode twoards my car....

"have i done something wrong officer?"

"no, just a random licence check"

Upon handing him my licence i asked whether this was a reasonable thing to be doing...pulling people over for no reason other than to check their ID. He was dumbfounded that anyone would raise it as an issue....

"yep, we do it all the time"

After being taken back to his car and run through the computer, the licence was returned to me, with a quick "no problems mate". and as he headed back to his car, i requested he make note in his report that I was opposed to this removal of my civil rights, to which he, with a look of complete confusion, nodded his head and wandered back to the police car.

Am i just an old man whinging... or is this one step away from germany in the 30's

Personally I have no problems with an ID card that gives me the benefit of not needing to take my passport with me on EU trips (as is the case with ID cards in other EU states), I know most people don't see this as a major benefit but if you fly to Europe as often as I have to carrying a passports is tiresome.

Well that's correct in most cases, unless your black.

Scrapped? You are having a laugh. They are already effectively compulsory for those who are here on non resident Visas - 90'000 out there already. They will do it bit by bit. Next up will be those who claim benefits - it will be required to register at the job centre etc. Then students in place of a uni ID card. They will gradually wittle away the numbers until you reach the point where it is such a pain the backside not to have one that the masses sign up for an easy life. Then once it is only those who resist on personal principle left it will become compulsory, and there will be no-one left to argue the case.

The only way to stop this is to vote Tory. Even that might not work.

Yes , combined with the weight of a boarding card it is almost back breaking :)

My Son was 15 when he was stood at his friends front gate chatting to him and his other friend when he was called over to a police car and made to sit in the back while they searched him and "checked him on the computer", recorded his name and address and sent him on his way. No explanation as to why he was searched, (his 2 friends werent) and no-one saw fit to inform me even though he was under 16. Just seemed wrong to me. :(

HoHo, have you seen how long it takes to get through Uk immigrations now from EU flight, pathetic. Why carry a book which becomes more and more shabby over time when a plastic card will do? The amount of time half of the border police take to find the page with your details on is also pretty pathetic, I've thought about signing up for the retina scan trials but they only work at specific airports.

I dont really have a problem with ID cards.... I just have a problem with having to pay stupid amounts of money for them.

You don't pass them your passport with the photo page open? You could be saving yourself valuable seconds.

I do, the 3,000 other people in the lines don't seem to

people will be demanding them soon , it's what the state is working towards ;)

It's not ID cards themselves that are the problem, it's legislation to make it a criminal offense not to carry one and the ludicrous cost associated with any government IT project to introduce them that are the problems.

ID's are not compulsory over here but if you want to drive, buy alcohol, tobacco, a gun, travel on a plane, use a credit card you better damn well have one otherwise you are shit out of luck.

Seems to me that if the EU/UK government want to enact this all they need to do is repeal existing laws demanding verification of age and/or identity for certain goods and services.
