Fosse Boy Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 The women's cricket team should have got that above the men's team - hadn't realised how much they'd won this year. This. Too many Manchester utd fans, thats simply the reason. And this. Giggs isn't an undeserving recipient, the guy looked genuinely humbled to have been awarded it and it obviously meant a lot to him. The thing is that there were far more deserving nominees there. At least half a dozen world champions in their respective fields were in that list I think? No doubt Giggs is a model professional and is deserving of some sort of recognition. But Sports Personality of 2009? No way.
Bert Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Who did everyone actually vote for then? Seeing as you're all moaning that Giggs won.
Sparky Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Who did everyone actually vote for then? Seeing as you're all moaning that Giggs won. Missus voted for Olly
Ultra Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Giggs isn't an undeserving recipient, the guy looked genuinely humbled to have been awarded it and it obviously meant a lot to him. The thing is that there were far more deserving nominees there. What the squaddie (Phil Packer) did in completing the London Marathon this year is arguably the biggest sporting achievement this year by anyone who was at the Sheffield Arena tonight. But the beeb chose to focus on more well-known names. At least half a dozen world champions in their respective fields were in that list I think? And Giggs is one of them. Man Utd are still World Club Champions, at least until next week when Barca will probably be the team to take that title off them. No doubt Giggs is a model professional and is deserving of some sort of recognition. But Sports Personality of 2009? No way. Had I wanted to boost BT's profits still further I'd personally have voted for Button. But I understand why people preferred Giggs. He deserves the award more than, say, Beckham or Gazza did when they won.
lildave3 Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Ridiculous. I was sick of Giggs jizzfest anyway, now it's even worse.
Fosse Boy Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 He deserves the award more than, say, Beckham or Gazza did when they won. Doesn't mean he deserves it more than some of the competition he was up against this year though, does it?
Finnegan Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 you'd have thought people were used to the sports personality of the year by now.
TrickyTrev Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Will the Ryan Giggs nonsense ever stop? The PFA award was bad enough, but now this. He's been a good player and has not really declined with age, which is a reflection on his professionalism and innate ability, but he is not one of Manchester Utd's most important players. He didn't even play much last season. I think it is a result of us (As football fans) feeling guilty that despite a distinguished career he did not receive (m)any individual honors in his prime. Truth is he was the 4th best player in that midfield (No shame in that). A very talented footballer with great longevity, at no one point the best player in the country but for over a decade amongst the elite. Perfect for lifetime achievement awards but these patently undeserved individuals honors just look a little ridiculous. Still, at least he isn't Zara fooking Phillips or a F1 driver.
Jimothy Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 Should say despite Giggs' joke of a win, it was nice to see Seve and Eddie Izzard pick up deserved awards.
Koke Posted 13 December 2009 Posted 13 December 2009 I've honestly never given a shit about this award.
Finnegan Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 I've honestly never given a shit about this award. Likewise. I'll give my opinion on who I think it should go to and who I think it's likely to go to but that's about it. Once it's over with I don't rightly give a toss. Always makes me laugh that year after year it's a little bit of a farce and year after year people get ouraged by this.
Radovan's Caravan Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Why do I get the feeling that you might be heading for another BBC poll rigging scandal? But 'they' wouldn't do that to a MANCHESTER UNITED player now would they? No, you'd never do that would you Rupert?
Finnegan Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Why do I get the feeling that you might be heading for another BBC poll rigging scandal? But 'they' wouldn't do that to a MANCHESTER UNITED player now would they? No, you'd never do that would you Rupert? It's a popularity contest. As much as I've expressed my surprise, one of the best loved players from one of the most widely supported (by glory supporters or not) football clubs on the planet winning a popularity vote hardly screams scandal. It was weirder when that horse riding royal bint won it. There'll be millions of armchair, never-been-to-old-trafford, sky sports fans all over the country who'll have voted for Giggs because they find F1 boring or whatever.
davieG Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Having a nominated list doesn't help either - I doubt he'd have won if otherwise.
Finnegan Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Having a nominated list doesn't help either - I doubt he'd have won if otherwise. Probably not but there you are.
Guest Bilo Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Giggs winning this is pathetic in my opinion. Rewind 12 months and Jenson Button couldn't win an argument let alone a race, now he's world champion. David Haye recently beat a man who had hitherto looked unbeatable and in horseracing, Tony McCoy has had the greatest career in National Hunt history, still wins the Jockey Championship every year and can't even get a sniff at the title. Giggs is a great footballer, has had a great career but shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near this title. Other Manure players, if it had to go to one, were arguably more deserving of the title than Giggs and even then I wouldn't have agreed with it. Very poor decision that devalues the award.
lou Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Quality tash Ryan Giggs dad has Think that was his grandad, his Dad is mixed race. End of the day it was voted for by the public not a panel of judges so the more famous will win over the (usually more deserving) lesser known sports. Id have like to seen someone win like Cavendish or Tweddle (God shes strange looking - bless her) & Jessica Ennis is one of my favourite athletes. I was shocked as I thought Button had this in the bag but I did like Giggsy reaction of utter surprise too and thought he was very humble. A lifetime acheivement award probably was more appropriate but they obv thought Sevvy needed to get it this year considering his health which is fair enough.
Fosse Boy Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Gutted Cav didn't win. I thought he was at least deserving of a top three spot, but maybe the voting public were fed up of cycling after last year's whitewash? He's got years ahead of him to win awards like this though.

Darkzzz_ Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 I thought Uncle Albert had come back from the dead when I see the news clip.
Super_horns Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 I thought he was at least deserving of a top three spot, but maybe the voting public were fed up of cycling after last year's whitewash? He's got years ahead of him to win awards like this though. He came 4th...anyway the cycling guys/press will probably give the bloke an award. There so many variation sof this award around its hardly worth bothering about. Giggs won by quite a margin: Ryan Giggs (29.4% 151,842 votes) Jenson Button (18.74% - 96,770) Jessica Ennis (15.58% - 80,469) Mark Cavendish (55,960) Beth Tweddle (38,907) Tom Daley (36,929) Andy Murray (19,936) Andrew Strauss (17,237) David Haye (13,916) Phillips Idowu (4,507).
Fosse Boy Posted 14 December 2009 Posted 14 December 2009 Didn't expect Haye to come so low down, what with his success being so fresh in people's minds an' all.
