Goalline technology

Recommended Posts

I've just heard that FIFA in all their wisdom have pulled the plug on goalline technology being pursued in the near future.

At the instance that this was announced Birmingham were denied a clear goal as the whole ball crossed the line after James threw the ball in the net.

When will FIFA enter the 20th century (no point in asking them to join the new millenium) and realise that technology in the game can only help!

It's like :frusty::frusty::frusty:

Good timing! What with that Brum 'goal' just then!

Was listening to it on the radio in work

Ridiculous but not surprising. When you've seen goals being scored and not given and nothing being done about it in the aftermath, you already know the F.A couldn't give a shit.

suppose , this is kind of a good thing, these incidents that would be cleared up by technology are what make the game interesting, the controversy gives fans things to chat about in the pub, people to blame when things are going badly.

Personally i wouldn't like to see football end up like (older) FIFA/PES/FM games where every single desicion is right THe game would be far too boring.

Still many teams have been badly affected by these desisions but you can't please everyone and perhaps just the extra refs (like in the Europa League) are a good enough compremise.

You haven't read the article?

The FA want to pursure it but they were outvoted by Welsh FA and Irish FA, who voted in line with FIFA.

If they're are really that concerned about the potential stop/start effect then they should do something about the interminable time it takes to organise a free-kick.

Goal line technology is the only technology I'd like to see in the game. A decision that is crucial, cut and dried and virtually instant.

Why wouldn't we want to see this?

The game is slow enough nowadays with referee's giving free kicks for any tackle that touches the opposing player! Sitting there waiting for the 4th official to decide if its a goal or not like in rugby with tries would be boring an pathetic. I hate it in Rugby as well.

There are so few times that these incidents happen, and the money that FIFA would waste in fitting, testing and maintaining the bloody things. In fact it wont even be fifa it will be our clubs that have to buy into the things, which will money away from other vital area's of the game. Such as signings. It will probably up the price of tickets as well.

Cant see it happening besides the controversy in football is part of the game. Gives you something to banter about.

The money they get from TV deals and ticket prices should more than cover a simple laser device that sends a buzz to the referee when the ball with a chip inside passes through the beam. Surely?

It's all well and good talking about the technology slowing down the game, but when you're getting non-goals being given like the one at Watford I think it was, surely there is some case for having something to kick in were there to be some massive incident.

Now obviously there is the debate as to what would constitute a massive incident where it would be used... that would be for the FA or whoever to decide, but do you really want to see matches being decided by ridiculous refereeing errors?

Posted

First of all, how many games take place, and how often do we hear about these incidents? Is it enough to warrant new technology? I don't think so.

Secondly, one of the things I like about football is the room for human error. It gives us something to talk about, and it helps with our sense of injustice or justice, depending on which side of the line it falls. I like the uncertainty.

Thirdly, football can be played by anyone and the rules and the standards are the same for all teams. Start bringing in technology, and it moves the professional game even further away from the amateur game.

Awwwww, can't it be a electric shock?

Please no more technology, the ref makes the decisions, you win some, you lose some. The introduction of Technology is just about placating the international betting syndicates.

We may never have won a world cup if there was technology. (by the same token the "hand of dog" incident would be a whole lot different), still, you win some, you lose some.

1) Players, shut up and accept the refs decision!

2) Managers, shut up and accept the refs decision!

3) Owners, shut up and accept the refs decision!

4) Supporters, scream and yell all you like, thats what you pay for.

If we bring in technology, we may as well play the game on Wii.

The referees need this technology to help them as they don't have the benefit of the countless slow motion replays that the commentators etc can see, who then in turn castigate the referees for being useless.

All you need is someone watching the match on a tv screen on the sidelines and when an incident like that on Saturday occurs then use your walkie talkie to radio the ref and tell them that it was a goal.

time taken max 20 seconds.

Shouldn't be brought in, I'm sure I'll want it if there's a blatant goal not given for us but it will slow the game down and once goal-line is introduced then we'll have offsides, free-kicks etc.

I can see why there are calls for it but at the moment we should stay as we are.

Were you listening to Mottie last night on the Monday night club?

If the World Cup Final is decided but a phantom goal or a goal not being given when it should of been then Goal Line Technology will be in very quickly as FIFA will be embarrassed into it.

It doesn't have to slow the game up, instead of having 2 extra officials doing sod all on the by-line have 1 watching the monitor that links to cameras in the goal posts, he only needs to have radio contact with the ref (line the assistants do now) and he can say "that was a goal" and problem solved

Always the way isn't it... I don't see the argument in not using goal-line technology. It would only take a few seconds and it is not as if it would be needed too often is it? I can only think of three or four high profile cases where it would have been needed recentley and each of them would have had the correct decision made if technology was involved.

Posted

I'm not overly convinced by either argument.

However, if Blatter is going to come up with all of these shit arse excuses for why we're not going to have it then he has really got to pull the plug on these 5th officials behind the goal in the Europa League, it is ridiculously embarrasing for the game to see them doing absolutely nothing for the whole match and if it came to him actually making a decision what's to say a player or the post isn't going to be in the way? Waste of time and money.

Exactly either it's a problem that needs solving or it isn't.

If it is then Technology over a 5th official has to be the better option if all they are going to impact on is the goal line incidents. Technology is also going to be cheaper and more accessible for all levels of the game than a 5th official.

Also when will this 5th official feel it's appropriate to act because as far as I can see every week there are incidents that the Assistants surely must see and yet do nothing about.

I still feel there is a lot more to be gained by having 'active' Assistants most only indicate offsides on their own initiative, even throw ins and corners many wait to see what the ref gives and then just meekly agrees with them.

I like the controversy in football but that being said I do think it makes sense for the 4th, 5th or 10th assistant to be able to look at a screen and make a call on certain decisions. I have seen them looking at screens anyway so what difference does it make to actually draw a decision from it.
