Jordan Posted 1 September 2010 Posted 1 September 2010 So, there's a hurricane spinning around the Atlantic now--it's name is Earl (hi, Earl, nice to meet you). Category 3, so its top winds are 125 miles per hour (about 200 km/h if you're one of those metric system communists); major hurricane. Better take cover... Phew. OK, it's east of the Bahamas. Far away from me, no threat, out of sight and out of mind. Looks cool, though. I'll go back to whatever I was doing be... wait, what's that? OK, so that doesn't look good. I'd hate to be in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and I know we've got some Foxiles out in the Tar Heel State, so I'd hope they're prepared for just-in-case... but I'm in NY, that shit is gonna swim well east of us. I'm cool. Umm... what's this medium-threat-level thing on New York? Whatever, don't panic; it's probably like that color-coded terror threat system the gov'mint put into place after 9/11, y'know, the one that never went below yellow alert. Yeah, but that's if--IF--the storm takes the left side of the track. But if I know anything about Earl, it's that he likes the right side, where he can go out in the open waters and go deep-sea fishing, not have to worry about bumping into guidos on the Jersey Shore and not blow sustained Lamborghini-style speed wind against my apartment building. He definitely doesn't want any blood on his hands from "life-threatening flooding" or anything like that. WTF WTF THAT FORECAST MODEL TRACK TO THE LEFT HAS THIS THING GOING RIGHT THROUGH MY BEDROOM FFFUUUUUUUUU... (*whoooooooosh!*)
Houdini Logic Posted 1 September 2010 Posted 1 September 2010 Question from last nights pub quiz - who said the following - ''Today a woman apparently rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane on the way. But if you are watching, don't worry - there isn't.'' Classic
New England Fox Posted 1 September 2010 Posted 1 September 2010 Im in New Haven, CT and I personally hope it comes right for us, then I'll get Friday night off work.
The Doctor Posted 1 September 2010 Posted 1 September 2010 how do they decide what to name a hurricane?
FoxyPV Posted 1 September 2010 Posted 1 September 2010 how do they decide what to name a hurricane? Alphabetically
Jordan Posted 1 September 2010 Author Posted 1 September 2010 There's a rotation of names, and they're used in alphabetical order. Notable hurricanes, like Katrina, get their names retired. If I were a surfer dude, I'd call out sick today and tomorrow, go to the beach, ride some gnarly waves and get totally stoked, man. Then again, if I were a surfer dude, I probably wouldn't even have a job anyway.

Jordan Posted 1 September 2010 Author Posted 1 September 2010 The images, not the text. Color-coded threat levels, destruction scenarions, CAPS LOCK: it's like the terrorists are coming, but this time, they're in the form of a cyclonic storm.
MPH Posted 2 September 2010 Posted 2 September 2010 I am living in north carolina. Not expecting to be affected by this. I'm near the city of charlotte.. but if I die I'll let you know....
Jordan Posted 3 September 2010 Author Posted 3 September 2010 As you can see by the updated images courtesy of The Weather Channel, Earl has decided to pussy out and take a more easterly route after bouncing off North Carolina and will maybe make direct landfall only on Long Island and Massachusetts' Cape Cod area. BOOOO. The remnants of tropical cyclones can often affect the NYC metro area but it's very rare that a hurricane makes a direct hit on the area. I haven't been in hurricane-force wind since Hurricane Bob went up the Atlantic back in 1991. I was in NYC, and my brother and I went out and threw footballs and baseballs around to see how far the wind would change the balls' trajectories. We thought it was, in our words at the time, "awesome," but that's probably because we were 8 years old.
Wymsey Posted 3 September 2010 Posted 3 September 2010 how do they decide what to name a hurricane? What next hurricane Obama?
Leicfox Posted 3 September 2010 Posted 3 September 2010 so its top winds are 125 miles per hour Get higher winds on Blackpool prom in the Winter. You Yanks are spoilt.
Smudge Posted 3 September 2010 Posted 3 September 2010 It's just passing us now 8:20; so far no big deal. Isabel was much worse as it came right over us.

Guest DavidJCW Posted 7 September 2010 Posted 7 September 2010 What next hurricane Obama? Nah... been and gone. Reached it's top speeds in 2008 - early 2009 and has been dissipating ever since. Now probably nothing more than a low pressure area or an extratropical low. With the way things are going, Tropical Storm Palin could well intensify into a full blown hurricane and power into Washington DC some time in 2012!

ACF Posted 7 September 2010 Posted 7 September 2010 We really stirred things up, didn't we? Not too horrific (a la Katrina), not too piss weak.
Smudge Posted 26 August 2011 Posted 26 August 2011 Yep! I'm heading West for two days, hopefully I'll have a home to come back to.
