About time. The amount of time, effort and money wasted by having so many seperate little empires each with their own agenda, expensive "management" team and complete lack of accountability is a damning expose of Labour's approach to government.

Why in the name of god the BBC picks Cycle England and some organic nonsense to use as examples is anyones guess.

So many to choose from, they probably drew them out of a giant hat.

I mostly agree, but also accept the need for some quangos. However the amount there are that are competing for the same thing is ridiculous. Consolidation, not elimination is needed and it will save millions. For example mergind the care quality commission with NICE would be very good, save a lot of money.

So what's wrong with Cycle England? Much better to have them than the Appointment Body to the House of Lords, or whatever it's called. Why not abolish the House of Lords instead. Now that would save a bob or two (but not Bob Lord obviously, I think he's already dead).

Am I the only person that thought some of these bodies were actually quite good?

don't worry , they'll probably reappear in different guises :)

Some probably are. There does seem to be an awful lot of them though. An awful lot.

Each with their own board of overpaid appointees to the gravy train.

Some things require independence, there is no doubt. Some however, have just been created so the Government could be seen to DO something, or so the Government could do something without being seen to do it. Both of which are simply ducking accountability for their actions.

This does not mean everything or even most of what they did is wrong, just that htis was the wrong way to do it.

Mind you, some things are just stupid. As are the press releases coming from those for whom the gravy train is making it's last stop.

Now if we could just change the law so we don't have to pay them all redundancy pay of 3 years salary...

No more FLA.

If this ends up leading to safe standing, I'll vote Tory. :trumpet:

But things such as the UK Film Council (which is used as the prime example of a 'ridiculous quango that needs to go') has done excellent things for the film industry in this country and 'the board of overpaid appointees' have undoubtedly covered their own costs not only from making films like Bend it like Beckham possible, but also for increasing our reputation on the international scene (and enabling us to say we have more digital cinema screens than any other country in europe!). It's not just all about arty Film4 movies.

The government itself has U-turned on the reasons for doing this and they have now admitted there won't be any significant financial savings.

I'm not judging this book by it's catchy headline - jury's still out for me
