Explain please, i was gonna ring them tomorrow as they are by far the cheapest on go compare the meerkat or whatever it is!

Get this....been with directline for 7 years, am 30 years old with full 9 years no claims. I drive a '93 toyota celica GTR just 2.0 16v import.....they want £950!!!!

And yet last year they insured me on a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee 4.7 V8 for £450!!!!!

What the fack!!!!!!

Cvnts....

Martin Lewis may be a bit of a smug cunt, but this saved me £200 last year. I was previously with Direct Line and changed to Admiral.

Yeah I'm with Churchill and can still get no-claims as a named driver.

I'd imagine that "no claims" is only valid with Churchill, and isn't worth as much as regular no claims. I had a similar thing with Direct Line. I had a years "no claims" as a named driver, and when I took out my own policy it was cheaper to get a new driver deal than a "driver with one year shitty no claims" deal (I believe that's the correct term for it).

The Word Import I guess!

Mate had an FTO and got his insurance through Adrian Flux they were the cheapest for him with an import car.

Will give them a try, just baffles me that thay only charged around £650 for my celica gt4 though. Really would like to know how there can sometimes be a deviation of £1000's between insurance quotes. And when you try to ask them to justify/explain the quote its just 'policy'

I live in a nice quiet area on the very outskirts of leicester but because my postcode is LE2 my insurance is fvcking high! It would seriously be cheaper to insure my car living in New Parks!(no offence anyone i used to live their and know what its like!)

ok, sorry to bring this up again. my lad (18) takes his test tomorrow, hopefully he passes :fc: we have been checking companies for prices for things like saxo's, 206's etc, they all seem bloody dear. any of you recommend insurance company that you use that are 'cheap?'

I think Admiral (or any from the Admiral group) tend to be cheapest for young drivers, try a quote on their site rather than using a comparison site, then phone up if you want to try and haggle.

Admiral tried to charge me £900 renewal this year. I went online and found a quote with Elephant (all part of the same company) for £551. I rang up Elephant, they gave me a quote reference, then said "Do you want us to put you through to Admiral?". They put me through, I told them the Elephant quote number and BAM, £551 renewal with Admiral. Jon done.

Quinn were great for me on my old Civic, but Admiral have been fantastic with my Type-R paid 550 odd last year fully comp at 24 years old with 3 years no claims.

Dreading my renewal in June though!

I'm with Elephant.

Found that the best way of getting the price down (my first year of driving) was to put down a few other experience drivers on the policy, I have my Dad and Gran on it, and that saved hundreds.

Been insured for a year with Tesco. Came to policy renewal and it had gone up loads

I've with Aviva now though :)

NB: On my mum's policy and no, I'm not cheating, because my dad drives the car I just have it at the weekends :)

elephant keep coming up as the cheapest (or very near) but with him having no claims and only (hopefully) passing his test tomorrow the average qoute seems to be £3000. thats with me and his mum as named drivers. cant believe how much it comes down down though with 1 years no claims, altered this on the qoute and came down nearly £2000, unbelievable

Have you tried these tips? That's the best I can do I'm afraid

Cheap option at the time but in the long run, maybe not so, because when you come to get your own insurance it would be slightly cheaper but probably not a whole lot cheaper.

Get your own insurance a.s.a.p imo, Get it over and done with.

I have been driving for 6 years this coming February (I think....) and it's nearly down to £400 already of a 1.6L Golf 2004, not bad i'd say. It started off £1500 on a 1L Corsa W reg but dropped dramatically year by year.

I'll bow down to you Matt, need insurance on an A3, c-class sport coupe,147 Alfa or possibly Golf not too sure which yet, and I'm about to be arse raped! Still £550 at 18 was a dream.

You will be as a younger driver in decent car, I'm afraid. Especially if this...

Interesting subject, can sympathise with the OP, he'll be pissed off enough with himself he hardly needs the full degree on here. I know enough people who have 2 or 3 and are completely fine and literally no risk, yet the day they get caught they're done for.

Whilst I've never touched it whilst at the wheel, a night out ending at 4am and a 9am drive is hardly uncommon for me, often wonder if I'm running the risk then.

...ever catches you out. :/

Should have been more clear on the 2nd bit, very rare I'll drink past half 1.

But thanks fo your sound advice.

I wasn't having a go, I just think it can be so easy to get caught out the next morning... especially as you don't feel 'drunk' by then. I'm not preaching... I've probably run the same risk myself in the past.

I saved £250 by going on comparethemarket etc over the quote I got from Directline this year. I think you are better changing or threatening to change your insurer every year so they don't take your custom for granted.

For new drivers - get a car with a small engine. A newish 1.3L will still have enough poke to fly about on the roads.

No it's cool I realised I worded it like a idiot with the hour 5 gap nonsense. Just felt abit of sympathy for the lad done on that subject thats all. I'd never get behind the wheel without feeling 100% able to do so.

I doubt sunday league football would exist if people had to go 12 hours after a night out without driving!

I would strongly recommend that people don't go on their parents insurance as a named driver if they will be driving the car more than their parents will. Insurance companies can look at peoples queries. For example, if you fill out a quote on an insurance company, you see a ridiculous price and then fill out the same quote as a named driver on their parents car, the company will see this and they may well monitor you from there on. I'm sure there are ways of getting around this, but it's something to be wary of because they will do it.

The best thing to do is to get a fairly little car and have you're parents (if they have a good driving record) as a named driver on your car instead. I have my mum as a named driver on my insurance and it lowered my quotes by a good £300.

I paid nearly £2000 on my 1.25 Zetec Fiesta just for 3rd party fire and theft (on my first year), but I'm glad I did that when I did because the prices have soared up again even after that! Ridiculous. Someone on my course is 20 and paid just over £3000 for insurance on his Ka. It's falling apart and is an absolute heap of shit lol (though I'm sure he just didn't look hard enough for a decent quote).

I'm also in a similiar situation looking to buy a car and get insurance for it. I suggest you buy a newer car and fix quite a high excess (£300)...

For example, I've done a bit of searching around already, an R reg Micra was 3000, fully comp with my dad as a named driver. So a little pricey.

However, if you tweak it a little say a 2004 Ford Ka, I got it down to £2000 fully comp and thats the same details but also with commuting/social and only £200 excess. So not bad at all, although, I am 20, a little bit older than the average first time buyer, not that it makes much difference...

Also, I would say confused.com is better than mymoneysupermarket, the searching process is better and I seem to get much better results on the former.

Or just search for a list of car and their insurance groups on Google to fin that information.

Also, using Go Compare and Money Super Market covers about 90% of insurers. You can then use the others to top that up.

I've been looking at a lot of cheap first cars. Between £750-£2000, 1.0 to 1.4, 30k to 80k miles.

They have all been between £1950-£2300 to insure. £2100 the average.

Using comparethemarket, confused.com etc, I have found that elephant.co.uk is the cheapest every time.

Insurance is just ridiculous.

I couldn't get insured on a 1.1 vauxhall Cora, cheapest quotes were coming up at 5k.

Ended up getting insured on a Toyota Avensis 1.9 for 1800k at 17, don't ask how because I have no idea either.
