Ozwin Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Would there be a difference between a newly passed 17 year old and a newly passed 22 year old on the same car? Or is it all based on the amount of time you've been able to drive? Car insurance terrifies me, I just can't understand how it can be 2 or 3 times more than your car is worth. Mental.

Or is it all based on the amount of time you've been able to drive? Car insurance terrifies me, I just can't understand how it can be 2 or 3 times more than your car is worth. Mental. It's based on the risk you pose to other cars, not the car you are driving, as most new drivers will go with third party insurance anyway. I passed at 24 last year and the cheapest i managed to find was £1700 for a 1.2 Punto.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 I passed at 19 and got insured for 1300 quid in a 1.3 car which isn't bad.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Insurance is just ridiculous. I couldn't get insured on a 1.1 vauxhall Cora, cheapest quotes were coming up at 5k. Ended up getting insured on a Toyota Avensis 1.9 for 1800k at 17, don't ask how because I have no idea either. Easy. The minute you say the word Corsa/Saxo/106 etc your price will increase dramatically. When I first passed I had a 1.2l Corsa, with four gears! That cost me more to insure than my mate who was 6 months younger than me and had a 2.0l Laguna. Mines up for renewal again soon. I lazily stuck with the same firm last year, despite them increasing the monthly payments by £14! I currently pay £66 a month third party fire and theft for a 1.6 Focus. I'm 25, I've got 6 years no claims, and still have mummy and daddy as named drivers as without them on it'd still cost me more despite me not even living with them anymore! Companies just hope that you won't be arsed with shopping around, or in my case last renewal, couldn't afford the deposit on a new policy
JadeFalcon Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 another tip.... dont buy cars that are considered boy racer cars... for your first car dont go for anything like a corsa/fiesta/saxo/pugeot ... try and get something like a slow estate car..... and yes insurance companies DO take into account the car your driving... its not official but they will always stump up premiums for certain age drivers with certain cars
potter3 Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Insurance doesn't make sense, I've had quotes of £600 difference, using exactly the same details, car etc, with the same insurance company. The only difference was that I got one of the quotes about 6 weeks later It's also cheaper for me to insure a 3.0 Supra TT than a Saxo VTS..
acooling08 Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 I got quoted £300 more on a 1.0 Suzuki Swift than a 1.3 Citroen Saxo.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 How can young people afford to buy petrol? Part time jobs and parents I reckon.
Saxondale Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 I need to buy and insure a car this week. Dreading the insurance rigmarole and cost, even at my age.
ousefox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Managed to get insured on my parents' Picasso for 90 days for £150 with the option of adding to that too! I'm 17.
Fox92 Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Im 19, and I got my first car about two months ago (even though I past my driving test two years ago) and the insurance was just over 1k... Ridiculous really, but cheaper than anything else I have been quoted for. How can young people afford to buy petrol? I've got a job, so I get money to buy petrol that way.
Ozwin Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 What car you got Fox92 and what company you with? I'd be over the moon with just over 1k compared to some of the prices posted in here so far.
Father Ted Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Managed to get insured on my parents' Picasso for 90 days for £150 with the option of adding to that too! I'm 17. What?!?! Who with? I have tried pretty much everywhere and cheapest quote I could find for a 1L was about 2.5k. I rang IKube up and as soon as I told them that my postcode was LE5 they put the phone down. Postcodes make a big difference.

Swintons i think I have no idea about it, just couldn't believe it was so cheap! Don't know if my postcode made any difference or not.
Webbo Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Makes a difference where it's parked overnight, on the street or a drive or a garage.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 First year insurance for me was £1300 as 19 year old. Second year was £700. And Fox92 is right, again, having a job can fund petrol easily, i'm same age as him and have no problems either.
Ozwin Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Peterborough, what car did/do you have to get it that cheap? And who was it with. Those prices are great.
SystonFox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 i passed when i was 18 im now 25 i'll give you a run down on my cars / insurance history 1st year : saxo 1.1i dads policy me as a named driver £575 2nd year : peugeot 106 1.1i my own policy £1,000 with a crash of my own fault on record 3rd year : saxo vtr £900 1 year NCB 4th year : saxo vtr £700 2 year NCB 3 pts on license and a crash 5th year : peugeot 206 gti 2.0 0 NCB and 3 pts on licences 2 crashes £800 6th year : peugeot 206 gti 2.0 1 NCB 6 pts on licence 2 crashes £1,100 7th year : peugeot 206 gti 2.0 2 NCB 6 pts 1 crash (first expired) £720 so the cheapest i had it was on a saxo vtr aged 21. no doubt it'd be much cheaper if i didnt **** up and get 6 pts on my licence and be involved in a few crashes. just be carefull out there kids and drive safely is all i can say. dont be a dick
The Year Of The Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Got some quotes referring to the post I made earlier. The cheapest works out at 600 which takes into the account my change of address and the fact my car lives overnight on a road now (normally yellow lines) instead of a driveway. Not too bad I guess. Need the check that the quote covers windscreen damage, as the heated ones cost about 500 to replace apparently
SystonFox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 also a quick tip. this year on my renewal it first came through £175 more expensive then i enquired about adding my girlfriend as i had previously had parents on policy but was advised to remove them to lower the cost, adding my girlfriend of the same age and same driving experience albeit a clean licesne and no crashes reduced my policy £175. so maybe worth a try lads? i wasn't even gonna tell the mrs but then i drove to the pub, had a few and told her to take me home as she's now insured. WIN WIN SITUATION
Rand94 Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Insurance is just ridiculous. I couldn't get insured on a 1.1 vauxhall Cora, cheapest quotes were coming up at 5k. Ended up getting insured on a Toyota Avensis 1.9 for 1800k at 17, don't ask how because I have no idea either. you spent 1,800,000 on insurance?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Peterborough, what car did/do you have to get it that cheap? And who was it with. Those prices are great. 1.3 Toyota Starlet and still driving it now both years were ten month policies. I'm with Elephant insurance. Found it helped that my Dad and Gran were added to the policy as additional drivers. My Gran lives in Leicester and will never drive it but it helped bring the price down a lot. If you can, add a few experienced drivers to it who have no penalties etc. Might help bring it down a few quid. My insurance going down six hundred quid really was pleasing after the first year with no problems.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 May 2012 Posted 6 May 2012 Swintons i think I have no idea about it, just couldn't believe it was so cheap! Don't know if my postcode made any difference or not. Course your postcode had effect on it. You live in a really decent area with lets say no people of certain backgrounds around who are often causing crashes etc. If you lived here or in Leicester it would be more.
