First off thats a myth, secondly its the only argument that exists in favour of a monarchy (speaks volumes), and thirdly did the removal of the monarchy in France, Germany, USA etc etc etc stop the tourists from coming...no it didn't. If the monarchy is the ONLY thing that makes you feel proud to be British then that is a shame but it of course your right

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 I'm not pro or ante the royal family i want Australia to stay part of the commonwealth mainly due to the fact if it ain't broke why fix it. But i do scoff at suggestions that the Royal Family is what defines Britain. Give it 2 weeks and people wouldn't actually give a rat's toss bag what the royal family is up to. I really think your selling England short by trying to state the Royal family is what makes England Great, it's Media propergander shove down your throat from a very young age and if you like it or not the Royal family have some say in what the media produce. To the person that believes the royal family is the single source of tourist income is having a laugh. I've been a tourist and stayed in Backpackers, meet and travelled with many fellow travellers. I can tell you for a fact that not one person said i'm here soley to see Buckingham palace and try to get a glimpse of the queen. Most Aussies and Americans i meet like to use London as a base as you have one of the busiest airports in the world and most flights connect from Heathrow. Plus Australia for one has a lot of English influences so they want to see and experience that.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 Maybe he thinks like me. It does take a great occasion to bring together a million people in London alone. People become as one, and are proud to be to be British, rejoicing together in an historic event. It reflects the Wartime spirit that united this country in the dark days of World War Two.We have to spend so much of our time, as horrific events perpetually occur all over the world, and in this country too. Giving people an occasion such as today's, demonstrates that we love to celebrate as citizens of Britain, travelling from all over from all over the country to unite. That is what the Great in Britain represents. Maybe so, Not the best Analogy but here goes. The recent floods and cyclones in Australia brought out the best in the majority of Australians. Millions of people donated money and a lot of people showed some real Aussie Spirit that brought Australians together. Does this mean natural disaters make Australia great? i wouldn't of thought so.

If the monarchy is the ONLY thing that makes you feel proud to be British then that is a shame but it of course your right I'm not pro or anti Royalty, but I wouldn't argue it's a myth. The point isn't that we only get tourists because of the Royalty, but that they help draw them in. There are hundreds of shops near where I work that survive purely by selling Royal tat. The tourists lap it up.
James. Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 I didn't go into Central London (in answer to your question earlier Alex) as I was too busy trying to pack up my flat but I did enjoy the atmosphere and buzz all around the area I live. I wouldn't say I'm massively pro or anti... I quite like the Royal Family, they're pretty entertaining and I've not got such a chip on my shoulder that I'm going to get pissed off about a tiny minority having a few privilidges above us commoners - privilidges that in any case are steeped in history and tradition. Life's full of imbalances, get over it. I saw an interview with an anti monarchist on the TV and she just looked like an idiot trying to moan about it while everyone behind her was having a laugh. Yesterday was just a good excuse for people to have a party - what's wrong with that? The irony is that people like BlueSi13 probably spent the day holed up in their bedrooms moaning on the internet and wanking over Kate while everyone else was out enjoying themselves.
FoxyPV Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 WTF BBQ - Equating the UVF (scum) to the Royalty is particularly apt - both are useless, xenophobic, a drain on public resources and anachronistic. At least the royalty aren't a bunch of drug dealing mafioso wannabe fucks.

Enjoy trying to insult someone over the internet do you? Poor you but seriously, where are you getting this 2 BILLION figure from? the British media were throwing this number around before the wedding had even started. Do you seriously believe approximately a third of the worlds population watched the wedding of two foreigners most had never heard of nor gave a flying **** about from beginning to end? Still the day off was nice, shame it wasn't the best weather but hey ho

Yup your absolutely correct, every republican was so contorted with rage yesterday that we never opened the curtains
Thracian Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 I don't think anyone has said that royalty is the only reason for tourism here or that it somehow defines England. But it does play a massive part in making us interesting to the world and, looking through the lists of major tourists attractions in Britain, it seems close to half are directly related to the monarchy and the history surrounding the monarchy. Tourism supports over 6% of the nation's workforce, that's how important it is and anyone who believes we are better off with a republic is wearing blinkers as these figures go some way to showing. What the hell do presidents offer by comparison other than perhaps to pay lip service to the misguided politics of envy. I wonder how tourism in Russia is going without its Royal family now that its citizens have so much freedom and opportunity under its dictatorial socialist administration. http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:BSoNid8k75gJ:www.visitbritain.org/Images/Employment%2520gatefold%2520PDF_tcm29-15224.pdf+number+of+tourist+related+jobs+in+UK&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgSWEiUAIZk_-Y9wIJBFyfi2g3IjU1oKsLp6pelH1WAkpzJkytq7I-FDelZP-nwge0H7cQIpbLF9yfOdSEw-GAotFLDwaKngEbnSTyFumqo3jSzPOCbVN84wHPDCCNK2UUoSgIc&sig=AHIEtbTgDzBr7wDn22Q7-UoUnsTPT35XbA

Maybe this is what makes you a bigger tourist destination as some of the other westernised countries that have there own royal family ie. Sweden and Denmark.

So as i've said before, the removal of the monarchy hasn't done any harm to other nations tourism has it? Would the removal of the monarchy of the Netherlands or Belgium for example make you less likely to visit those places? Didn't think so.

Don't try and defend your argument by subtly changing what I said, which didn't even mention "Royal residences" . Warwick Castle, is a massive tourist venue that has longstanding royal connections but is not a royal residence. Caernarvon Castle, Hampton Court, the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle are the same and there is massive royal connection relating to Westminister Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, York Minster, Canterbury Cathedral and so on. You really would try to convince yourself of anything. I've visited Belgium and Holland once my life as a tourist. Says it all really and exactly confirms the validity of my argument .
Guest ttfn Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 Why is the Queen such a mardy bitch? I don't think I've ever seen her smile. That's my only problem with the royal family.

BoneDog Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 There's not a chance in hell that 2 billion people watched this wedding. It's a very silly thing to believe, but they planted the seed and people lapped it up. Royal Wedding Unites The World In Mathematical Lunacy And the arguement that the wedding brings in money from tourism doesn't wash as a reason for us feeling alright about paying the £20million (or so) for the wedding. If the royals paid for their own wedding the tourism money would still have came rolling in, so us taxpayers are still £20million down and I'd rather have that cash spent on something useful thanks! They must larf their paps off at the British public sometimes, but some folk have their tongues so far up their asses they never bother about these things. The only sovereignty these people have is all in your minds and the whole thing astounds me.

BoneDog Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 What did you think of Kate's dress? It was ruddy beautiful, it must have been 3 cars long! Talking of Kate, I'm watching channel 4 right now (well, the Mrs is) and I just heard an advert for a programme where the voiceover said "commoners marrying royalty is no new thing"! Is Kate supposed to be a commoner or something? I always thought she was from a multi millionaire family whose father shares a bloodline with some famous old aristocrats (not sure that's the right word) The family is far from 'common'!
