Fucking disgusting.

The right wingers can justify it all they want. Come out here and see Mumbai for yourselves and then we'll see if you stand by your point of view.

Would it make you feel better if he had built it in Monaco?

For some reason without any other knowledge people are happy to condemn a bloke for building him family home with about 3% of of his net wealth. Who knows what he does with the rest of it.

He employs tens if not hundreds of thousands of people.

Pays Billions in taxes.

No doubt donates significantly to charity.

You personally aside James, most people do nothing of the like but are happy to criticise others for one aspect of the their lives. With this kind of mentality they should be writing for the Daily Mail.

ALthoughthe job tally sounds interesting, relative to the cost of the property, the jobs created is miniscule. Also one has to take into account, in india people\labourers\cleaners etc, which will make up a considerable number, don't have contracts or workers rights etc, and get paid peanuts, work shitty hours etc!!

I appreciate that but it's got to be better than begging.

Would the poverty be any better if this guy lived in an ordinary semi, doing his own cooking and cleaning?

I would agree with james, only without seeing the reality of an empire, could only then one should judge!!

He may pay billions in taxes, BUT this is India not the UK and giving an example, The richest man in Punjab, Mr Gurinder Singh Dhillon, otherwise known aa the Guru or God Man of the RadhaSwami Cult, who is a major share holder of Religare pays less tax then Mcdonalds (yes ronald McDonald). Power is everyhting in India, the man commands millions of votes, has over 50 court cases for embezzlement, he has over 1 billion rupees of the punjab governments land in his possession. The guy is untouchable but in comparison to Ambani this guy is a pouper, so how much tax is for show and how much he doesn't pay, one can guess it's a very little compared to what he should be!!!

You guys need to get your head around things, India is not the UK, everything and everyone can be bought, everyone has a price, man has no value!!!

Anyone that could live, every day, looking over mass slums whilst living in a twenty seven floor personal sky-scraper is a living, breathing embodiment of everything that's flawed with the human race.

End of discussion.

I'm genuinely a tiny bit sickened by anyone who thinks that's open for discussion, sincerely, no exaggeration. I know we all have our political differences, I know I'm a silly, leftist idealist. But some things are just a little bit above and beyond little arguments over the specifics of welfare or social mobility.

It's like me opening a Faberge Egg shop in slums of leicester and having people praise me for having one job open for a cleaner, It's about perspective, there are over 10 million living under the poverty line in Mumbia and over 1 million child prostitutes, 600 more beggars or workers won't make a dent either way. And it;s not like any of the jobs will go to slum dwellers, they will be poor but not overly poor, as he wouldn;t want the stence of the poor getting into his home!!

Nobody's praising anyone, and I don't doubt what you're saying about the corruption in India but the 10million under the poverty line aren't all this guy's fault.

I'm sure the 600 people he employs in his house and the thousands he employs in his various businesses are glad of their wages.

I agree - I'd have built it out in the country so their sad faces don't ruin my pop tarts in the morning

I know what your trying to say, and yes to a degree your right, 600 better then nothing, and it's his money, he can do what he likes. But we are stil human and the humanity, and concious of man must count for something. Such exberance, selfishness and cockyness, should be treated with comptent.

Look at the bigger picture, What do you think will happen to those slums?? Wel I can imagine, Ambani will have them relocated to the outskirts of the city, and he will buils his empire in there place? The poor will suffer, there is no work etc outside of mumbai. The government will be pleased, the low caste dalits\slum dwellers will be cleansed from the city, bringin in the middle and upper classes, Mumbia for the rich!!!!!!!!!

It's good to see The Singh (a man who knows 100 times more about India than all of us put together) agreeing with my feelings about this.

This isn't about politics (I work for an investment bank and I wanted the Tories to win the election - I'm hardly what you would call left wing). And not so long ago I would have posted very similar arguments to Jon the Hat - that this man pays billions in tax, employs thousands of people and can do what he wants with his money.

But that changed when I moved to Mumbai. My perspective completely changed.

This house isn't just about one man, it isn't about how much tax he pays or how much he gives to charity, it is a reflection of the attitudes and actions of a society that does not care about its poor. You only have to drive through the city to see what India thinks of those less fortunate, and this will only serve to reinforce this attitude - that it is perfectly ok to flaunt wealth in a city where people still starve to death.

It is crass, it is tasteless and like The Singh says, if you actually see India for yourself and understand a little bit about how things work here, you might see things differently.

I have not been to India, but I have been to other cities where rich and poor rub shoulders and I take your point. It does show a distinct lack of empathy for others plight.

Singh's analogy was spot on. I personally can't get my head around anyone who feels the need to live in such over the top wealth. But in response to whoever asked if it would be any better built in Monte Carlo, a little bit, yes.

It would at least then somewhat less ressemble a giant middle finger.

not much point being fookin rich if you can't flaunt it

if i was stinking rich , i'd open a Cartier jewelery shop on Singh's street and a Rolls Royce showroom on Finners' street with a sign up saying

" get rich like me , and one day you may be able to buy summat from here !" :)

acronym not missed :D

anyway,

i'm not sure this over sensitivity to conspicuous wealth is not just a peculiarly British attitude , i think in many countries around the world there is a more of an acceptance of the great divide .

and realistically the creation of the jobs in the local area should not be so easily dismissed in my view

i would sooner his money was spent that way than the current trend of investing in poxy english football teams

but i do see the other pov and not really wishing to make light of it

it doesn't look like another can of worms will make a difference to this thread so:

As the caste system appears ingrained into indian culture, I wonder if that had anything to do with his 'home' does anyone know what caste this man is? Would that have anything to do with this?

I doubt caste has anything to do with where he built his house. He is a baniya (merchant caste) which is well above the slum dwellers, who are generally untouchable (dalit's).

ALthough the baniye of the punjab have a superiority complexe, and have no love for either the low caste or giving up the caste system!! Maybe mumbia ones are the same!!

Are there many other castes above his? I just wondered if he was making a statement to them... you know....' I am from this caste and I can do this.... you are suppopsed to be a higher caste but have nothing like it' kind of thing....
