Sven says he will unload unhappy Leicester City players

Sven-Goran Eriksson has told any unhappy members of his Leicester City squad they can leave in January.

Eriksson has wasted no time in reshaping his squad since he arrived two months ago.

The arrivals of loanees Curtis Davies, Greg Cunningham, Kyle Naughton and Roman Bednar has meant previous first-team regulars like Matty Fryatt, Bruno Berner, Michael Morrison and Robbie Neilson have struggled to even get into the match-day squad of 18.

The City boss admits players are understandably upset at not being picked but has challenged his fringe players to prove they are better than his new recruits.

However, he said if they want to leave they will be allowed to do so in January when the transfer window opens.

1x1.GIFEriksson has also stated there will be more new signings next month, including a big-name recruit.

"You don't need to be an expert in football to understand they are unhappy," said Eriksson.

"The fact is everyone has to compete for a place. I tell the players that they should come in with a smile, work and if they don't want to do that then the window is open in January. If you are not happy in the club then you shouldn't stay.

"I think there may be a few leaving in January. I am happy if they want to stay and I always say it is up to them to show me I have made a mistake.

"Everyone wants to play, especially when you take a player like Bruno Berner. He did very well for the club last season. If we look at the left-back position, if those who can play left back are better than Greg Cunningham then show me. If I thought so then I would leave Greg out.

"He is not playing just because he is on loan or has come from Manchester City. I couldn't care less about that. But at the moment I think he is the best we have and it is simple as that.

"It is in my own interest to play what I think is my best team. Every time we lose I lose as well."

Eriksson said the club's new owners were ambitious and were planning to give him funds to recruit a big-name signing in January.

However, that may not be easy as Eriksson admitted previous targets such as Robbie Keane, Roque Santa Cruz and even David Beckham had all declined because they are reluctant to drop into the Championship.

"The owners want a big signing," he said on Monday night's Football Forum on BBC Radio Leicester.

"It is interesting the players that have been mentioned. I made phone calls to more or less all of them.

"Most of them, they don't really want to come to our league. If we get to the Premier League it will be much easier to get these players.

"If you talk about Beckham, of course I should take Beckham but I don't think he will go anywhere.

"I spoke to his agent to see if there was a small chance, but he said it was not possible.

"It is difficult when you talk about players at that level. It would not be fair to pay that kind of money if we are in the middle of the table.

"It is very difficult for a player to drop down into a lower division. We are trying and the owners are happy to back me."

Can't fault what he says there. The only concern I have in all of that is that "the owners want a big name signing".

Fuck off out of fiddling with the team and go sell some more dodgy duty free. Sven should be under no pressure whatsoever to get a "big name". He should only buy players that fit into what he wants to achieve with the squad.

Love it the fact that they don't wanna be here they can leave , sends out a strong message to players but I can see the likes of fatty fryup, berner, morrison and few others going . The only person I would be be sad at leavin would be berner because I think he's class but then again sven knows and in sven we trust

A big name signing and unhappy players going. Messi for Fryatt it is then. :trumpet:

i really don't think cunningham is an improvement on berner

Me neither.

I am surprised that Sven named Bruno when discussing players fighting for their places or going in the window. It doesn't strike me as necessary to have to name any players and if anything strikes me as a little bit disrespectful.

very much so ,

they are only loan players and in all probability be returning, so he really ought to be handling this with a little more diplomacy and encouragement

but him de boss i suppose, and will stand or fall by his tactics

what he is saying is that he very well could bench Cunningham for Berner, he etherefor says that Berner is still very cabable of playing before Greg if he fights for his place in training.

Agree, also it rarely works and risks upsetting the team dynamics, imagine what would happen if we signed someone like Becks, it would become Beck's City FC.

but Berner had proved himself very capable in that position and, like many , probably feels as though there were other more pressing positions that needed improvement

just seems like blind tinkering to me

but as i said before he am da boss and knows much more than most of us

Step up in training and the possibility of playing rise. If you don't like it find some other club. Nothin strange there....

except , that when cunningham ( probably) returns , we will probably not have berner either and be in a worse position

When(or if) Cunningham leaves we will have two players in the position that plays ok in PL, don't worry.

Seriously, Sven wants players to work hard and take what they can get without complaining. He's not a manager yelling at people, pushing them around. Players have to prove their worth and that they are adults capable of taking responsibilty over their own lives. Moaning or lazy players isn't good for team morality so good riddance.

Sven is class, says the right things, right messages - top bloke! I think his loanees so far haven't been to far off of the mark, i think Naughton and Davies are quality, i think Cunningham has the potential to be good too, maybe needs a run for his money to keep him on his toes? I do still rate berner tho, as i think he played a pivotal role in how well we did last season

I hope Berner doesn't go, I think he still do a job for us.

But if sven has better replacements in mind then you can't argue.

I wouldn't be too disappointed if we made a sneaky bid for Berner. Does Sven plan on getting your loans in full time then?

His contract's up at the end of the season but he had his first child in the Summer so I imagine his next move will be decided by his family life. If I had the choice of raising my kid here or in Switzerland, it's hello laughing cow, where can i buy a cuckoo clock?
