Do we now need to switch to a 4-4-2?

Now that we've signed Yakubu (it's pretty much confirmed according to Sky Sports) I was just wondering if we now need to revert to a 442 with Yakubu and Vassell up front?

If everyone is fit then i would start with this team:

GK Weale

RWB Naughton

CB Hobbs

CB Bamba

LWB Berner

CDM Abe

CAM King

LAM Gallagher

RAM Wellens (although he can freely roam where ever he like tbh)

ST Vassell

ST Yakubu

I just want to know whether or not we need to change to a 4-4-2?

That looks horrible. How would the midfield retain any ball? And where would our width come from. And i'm fairly sure an attacking midfield role would be Kingy's weakest position.

Ignore my team choice for a second. I just want to know how we will fit all our best players in to a starting 11, surely we'd have to go 4-4-2?

Personally I think you've got it the wrong way round. We need to fit our best players into our best formation. This means the 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Vassell probably moving out wide in place of Dyer.

Yukubu, Dyer, Vassell at the top of the 433 would be genius. Not any kind of FU to Gally, I just think he offers the least of the four in open play.

He seems to have an early understanding with Bamba at the set piece, mind.

I'd go with that as well but I think Sven sees Gally as a more diverse link between the midfield and forwards, rather than favouring out and out pace.

I'll echo my comments from the similar (same) :dunno:Midfield thread

Our midfield would be over-ran if we went to 4-4-2

Isn't the Yak just a Vassell on steroids?

Dyer will be the make-weight. We'll continue playing as we are but Gallagher will replace Dyer on the left, and Vassell will replace Gallagher on the right - Although this formation is proving not to work away from home, unless the uplift of Samba/Mee/Yak can help make it work

Dyer is soo bad, all he can do is run, he's quick and thats it. We need a quick winger who can cross it and score.

I would quite like us to play 442 with Vassell and Yakubu or Waghorna and Yakubu up top but unfortunately we don't have a suitable right winger and it would also necessitate dropping Andy King to the bench so I don't think we are ready to do so just yet.

Don't be a retard. Dyer clearly isn't world class and nor is he likely the best we could get, but he is good at this level. He terrifies full backs and pulls defences all over the place with his running.

Very much doubt we'll switch formations. Sven's been here 3-4 months now, and seems to have things working with a settled formation.

It'll be between Gallagher and Dyer for the final wingers spot.

I wouldn't be so sure on that.

I'm not denying that, he does scare full backs and he causes all sorts of probems, but, he gets put through one on one so often and flops almost every time. Look at Millwall away for example! I'm simply saying that we could do with someone who scares full backs like Dyer can but someone who will score when given a chance.

Gally would stay, set-pieces and all that. Dyer, impact player. Gally was never subbed over Xmas/New Year which says a lot.

This is the reality...

However I dream of some serious changes, something like,

Weale

Naughton--Hobbs--Mee--Berner

King--Bamba

Vassell--Gallagher--Dyer

Yakubu

Sorry Bert, but the only reason Sven has stuck with one formation is because he's had no choice from what he's saying. Hence our away results have shown that we will only be successful with the 'settled formation' if the other team just doens't show up at home (see Hull).

I think if there are truths to the rumours that Wellens is off to Brum, then he will be looking for a new type of midfield player, as he can't drop one for losing the effectiveness of another. Bit of a quandry. But oul Sven will find the right mix of talent to make it work.

I have said often that we play too open away from home and remain surprised that Sven has not set up more cautiously even if he picked the same players.

If Wellens does go, then we need a proper playmaker, someone to provide the creative spark, difficult but not impossible to find.
