Ibbyfox Posted 23 January 2011 Posted 23 January 2011 Also Coatsworth's 30 yard screamer against Luton earlier that season (i think) - he looked completely shocked that it went in. Yeah I remember that too, forgot it was against Luton though. He was a player of very limited talent so it must have been a fluke. About the same time but there's Jimmy Willis as well who used to put his nose on the line in defence
Ibbyfox Posted 23 January 2011 Posted 23 January 2011 Who would you say is our current no frills player/s? Howard?
lcfcadam Posted 23 January 2011 Posted 23 January 2011 Lee Morris Momo Sylla Alan Maybury His former St. Johnstone manager, Sandy Clark had this to say about him: "He's so skilful. The thing about Momo is this - he doesn't even know what he's going to do, so how's a defender supposed to know?" Classy!
Far Post Gerry Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 Not sure if I totally get this thread, but Gary Mills was a brilliantly efficient player - did his job superbly and effectively. He was skillful too mind, but didn't muck about with any fancy flicks - does that disqualify him? Also Paul Ramsey.

Had the combined skill of a garden spade and a bag of cement but boy was he effective. mugged a few people on the pitch in broad daylight and got away with it every time. Fantastic player. Loved watching him.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 Ben Thatcher in his short time here Tony Cottee Scowcroft
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 Simon Grayson Paul Fitzpatrick Colin Gordon

About the same time but there's Jimmy Willis as well who used to put his nose on the line in defence I remember a game at Barnsley where Coatsworth scored TWICE! The second goal (the winner) was pretty decent too.. Has Ali Mauchlen been mentioned yet?
cc_star Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 Phil Gee, who's now a painter & decorator according to Wikipedia He was a post away from scoring the greatest ever hat-trick at Filbo when he scored 2 crackers against his former club, the sheep. 3-2 great game!
Far Post Gerry Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 MPH, couldn't agree more mate. Gerry - alongside Matty Elliott - was a beautiful to watch (in a gritty, Ray Winstone movie kind of way). You might as well have built a couple of tower blocks in front of goal.
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 Also Coatsworth's 30 yard screamer against Luton earlier that season (i think) - he looked completely shocked that it went in. Ok....any excuse. ENJOY!!!!
Pegosteve Posted 24 January 2011 Posted 24 January 2011 There is only one to mention here...... Alan Woollett 245 appearances 1964 -1978. man to man v Kevin Keegan he was class.
Captain... Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 Kevin 'Rooster' Russell Do you know how he got the nickname "Rooster"? According to Wikipedia it was because of his distinctive quiff hair do. I remember being as bald as a coot. I don't class him as no frills though, he was quite a skillful player and scored some vital goals. Iwan Roberts, now there is a no-frills forward, stick it on his head, if he got it at his feet he didn't know what to do with it other than toe poke it at the goal. Legend.
ibbosuk Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 Alan Woollett was a locally born defender, who played for Leicester City during what many people believe to have been their golden era in the late sixties and early seventies. (Sorry already here. I come back with another when I've had a think) What about Bobby Kellard (Midfielder as I remember) John Sjoberg and Graham Cross Both solid and no frills. Dennis Rofe tough tackling full back.

But I remember Keegan nutmegging Woollett and flashing a shot just wide, but that was it, you never saw keegan again, some rough treatment handed out that to him that day. Hard player Woollett.
Fox1651 Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Probably more on a serious note now - Simon Grayson and Gerry Taggart are the best ones i can think of who were basic no thrills players but very good all the same
okie fox Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Howard Riley, 1955-65. Speedy outside right with a rocket shot from the wing and deep crosses. Nothing subtle about his game.
