Andy Hughes

Anyone know exactly what happened or what was said between Andy Hughes and a few of our fans towards the end of the first half?

This was taken from a Scunthrope forum ...... Slapped in the face by a Leicester fan as he tried to retrieve the ball for a corner at the end of the first half. Despite the fact that Hughes and SET occupants pointed out the culprit, the stewards remained diinterested. Now, I feel like slapping Hughes at times, but this is ridiculous. People have had got life time bans for less. Our stewards are a joke

This would be why he spat towards our supporters. Whilst this is no excuse as he's a pro you dint expect to get slapped in the face.

Didn't he spit at some of our fans? That's what I read on the match thread at half time.

Edit - just saw Bert's post, looks like he did

although i was sat on the side, it didn't look like anyone slapped him, just took him a while to get the ball for the corner, but i saw him spit at our fans

I was sort of involved. Some lads near me wouldnt give the ball back. winding him up, then one 'slapped him' was nothing really. Then he spat into the area, not at anyone inparticular, bit landed on my finger.

****. Pro footballers should be able to take a bit of winding up.

No-one slapped him. To me it looked like someone said something, and he appeared to square up to them.

Someone in that group definitly slapped him, I was right near it.

Yes, they should be able to take a bit of winding up. Why on earth should they take being slapped by anyone? Joe Average in the street would do more than spit at somebody if he were to be slapped. Seems that little group got off lightly, to me. Disgraceful behaviour.

there is a difference between winding up and slapping someone..

dont matter if it was just a tap or anything.

no one has hte right to put there hands on another to be honest..

Fair enough, I was at the top. It just looked like verbals where I was. I take it back. Haha.

Yeah, I guess it was unacceptable, they were teasing him preventing him from getting the ball back. The slap really wasn't much though. The stewards should have kicked the lad out i guess but also the incident should be looked at. I was quite annoyed that i got sprayed a little even though i wasn't anything to do with it, just standing nearby.

I had a perfect view of it, was a few metres away.

They had a corner, end of the first half losing 1-0, would obviously want to rush. He tried to get the ball, and our fans wouldn't give it to him and the usual banter went on. He may have been 'touched' but nowhere near a slap. And us being away fans, we kept pissing him off with usual banter (any away support would) and I saw him say something to us but couldn't tell what (doubt it was anything nice though).

As he started to walk off into the penalty area (as he wasn't taking corner) he looked up at our group of fans and DEFINITELY spat at us, as a bit of it landed right next to me. An absolute disgrace in my opinion... as a professional footballer your going to get banter from the opposite fans, but you shouldn't react by spitting... hopefully someone might have been videoing it on their phone..

Typical of someone whose played for Leeds- dirty bastard.

its NOT acceptable to put your hands on someone else so i dont see how you can try and defend it.. tap or slap....

banter is banter but that crosses the line

Well I suppose the guy might have been in the wrong there, but I still don't think that defends Hughes spitting at our fans- others that hadn't done anything to him (apart from usual banter). He's a human, but as a professional sportsman he shouldn't do things like that.

Yeh actions should have been taken against the guy which slapped him, though it doesn't sound like it was a particularly heavy Peggy Mitchell esque slap, but spitting at people is just vile.

That much is entirely understandable, but irrespective of the weight of the slap, some people are reacting in a way as though they'd rather Hughes have chinned the lad that did it. Both parties are in the wrong, but you have to feel that there's no way Hughes would have come to spit at anyone without first being the victim of physical abuse.

It would be highly excessive to call it 'physical abuse'. He was softly stroked by the hand of a slightly over-excited spectator. He definitely did spit at the fans, but not at any of the ones that were involved in the altercation. So basically some random onlookers got coated in his gob. Charming fellow.

Highly excessive it may be (I can't comment on how much force was used as I wasn't there and didn't see it) but it could form the basis of a criminal offence; some of our lot have already stated that the guy probably should've been dealt with by the stewards. Go figure. Two wrongs don't make a right, but the simple facts are that without the first wrong the second probably wouldn't have occurred.

What a load of crap, he's a professional footballer and deliberately spat in the opposing team fans area, he should be fined and banned.

And he shouldn't have gone in the crowd to get the ball.

Well it wasn't exactly the wisest idea to go and try to snatch the ball from the crowd was it. If you march into a group of people in an overtly hostile manner, then I think you implicitly consent to being subjected to some form of physical contact. You don't consent to violence, but neither was he met with violence.

Wouldn't the Law be good if we could just make it up as we go along, depending on how we are feeling? Jamie is someone who knows how it works. What you're saying is common sense, but that result will never happen without the fan becoming involved again as well.
