lcfcadam Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Someone last year asked for John Smiths. Asking for Smiths at a beer festival Doombar Shame Sharp's is no longer an independent brewery, hopefully Molson Coors doesn't industrify and ruin all their beers...
skinnydipper Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 For those with a driver this is well worth a visit. http://www.clipstonbeerfestival.org/index.htm A number of pubs in the Welland Valley also run a beer festival later in the year with buses running between the pubs and from Market Harborough http://www.wellandvalleybeerfestival.co.uk/
Rincewind Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Yeah heard about that one. Supposed to be good.

Raw Dykes Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 I've worked in a couple of real ale pubs, and I think that turns you into a bit of a beer connoisseur/snob (delete as appropriate), as you have to taste them all the time. Some of my favourites: Bath Ales Gem Woodfordes Wherry St Austell Tribute Everards Tiger, and Original Wychwood Hobgoblin I know Wadworth 6X and Marstons Pedigree are both very popular, but they were both rank at one pub I worked at. We did keep the beers well, but all the staff agreed 6X always tasted like eggs, and Pedigree was very dog breathy. I'm sure they must taste better elsewhere. I remember a very nice one that tasted a lot like French bread with butter, but I can't remember the name. Anyone know what it's called?
Rincewind Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 The tour county one. Welland Valley? Normally advertised in the Leicester Drinker when its on. Think its the Loughboro one soon. Normally go but moneys tight at the moment.
Wycombe Fox Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 I've started drinking ales in the last couple of weeks as opposed to lager or wine. Tesco have been doing three 500ml bottles for a fiver so I've been through the shelves. Fursty Ferret, Gold Glory, Gold Champion, Abbot and Spitfire were the favourites. Didn't like Bishop's Finger at all but this was the only one I took a real dislike to. I wish I'd have tried these years ago. I've never really been able to taste the difference in lagers and wines but I can with ales and it makes a pleasant change.
The People's Hero Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Doombar Lovely drop. Had it in my old local and they used to really look after their real ales in there. Been drinking bottled ale a bit recently, since I can only tend to have one beer - I like to have a nice one.
The Doctor Posted 24 February 2012 Posted 24 February 2012 I may well have found my new favourite brewery. Titanic - top beers, slightly sinister (or sometimes funny) names and, well they've a lovely stout for which the picture is this: How can you say no?
Out Foxed Posted 24 February 2012 Posted 24 February 2012 Sold in Waitrose at Oadby for about £1.90 a bottle. Shall be buying a few for Thursday evening. this is on tap in the clarendon (queens road) and the yews (Great Glen) off the top of my head. i like it too. got hobgoblins on deck at the moment. was in the star and garter the other day and had the spitfire (obviously) and another ale which i'm struggling to remember the name of, it was really nice and 4.5 %. i'll try and get the name of it. hooky gold is decent
Nick Posted 24 February 2012 Posted 24 February 2012 St Austell, Proper Job on draught. Favourite thing at the moment.

Shall have to pay those hostelries a visit as you can't beat it on draught. Hobgoblin is on draught at Enigma in Harborough and if over this way The Royal Oak in Naseby usually has an excellent selection of beers. Just got a batch of this in for the weekend
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 25 February 2012 Posted 25 February 2012 Any Oakham ales will do me. Others I like are: Batemans XB Bishops Farewell Old Goose Black Sheep Ale Hobgoblin Tangle Foot Old Thumper Ruddles County Old Speckled Hen Old Golden Hen Bishops Finger Innis and Gunn Sneck Lifter First Gold Bombardier Fursty Ferret Old Bob Spitfire Marstons Pedigree Gentleman Jack Directors Old Empire Just a few in the 4 for £5 offer at Asda during Christmas, still got a few left.
BoneDog Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 When I was away the other week I started getting into these kind of beers. I usually drink lager in a pub but decided to try some Burton Bridge Bitter. It was friggin' lovely and I'm still trying to work out what the slightly fruity after-taste was. Not as cold as a pint of lager but I soon got used to that. I had a few pints over the week and also tried a pint of Old Growler, which was a guest beer from Nethergate Brewery. Was going to try a pint of Porter but they were all out of that one. Old Growler is nearly as black as a pint of Guiness but a totally different taste, and yet the Burton Bridge Beer was a much lighter colour. What is the difference between dark and lighter coloured beers? When I was at the bar I heard someone ask if such and such a beer was dark or light, and I thought 'blummin heck, this real ale malarchy isn't as straight-forward as it seems'.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 I may well have found my new favourite brewery. Titanic - top beers, slightly sinister (or sometimes funny) names and, well they've a lovely stout for which the picture is this: How can you say no? I could sink one of those right now.
Rincewind Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 One place I go in at their last beer festival had a dark IPA (Indian Pale Ale) It was nice but I said it was strange to have a dark pale ale. You can also get light coloured milds, Darks tend to be porters or stouts. I like the porters with fruit and coffee in. Some very nice strawberry porters about. Got some beer in for the match tonight but I'm afraid I've let the real ale lot down a little. I've got Cobra at 3 for £5. Pretty sure its an Indian Lager. At least its not Heiniken or any of the other popular stuff. Could have had San Miguel or Tiger Lager but the Cobra was a nice size bottle. Just half done some chinese food ready to do for another 5 minutes or so before the game. Depending on how it goes I'll drink one or two tonight. (or three if thirsty)
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Cobra's quite nice. It's certainly not Carling... I've never understood it's popularity, it still tastes like English lagers of the 70s, when we did watered down versions of continental lagers.
Rincewind Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Yes not had it for a while. Thought about having a mix but Tesco Express don't have the choice the superstore does. Right finish cooking my chinese and geta bottle from fridge time.
