iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 Just wondered if anyone else enjoys Real Ale ? Becoming less and less common now.. Any recommendations ? The best you've had? Which Pub etc ..
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 It's not becoming less and less common, if anything the market is increasing. My dad gives me lectures on it all the time. Prefer it to lager, at the minute, always depends what mood I'm in though. This is the shit:
Webbo Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 They used to do a nice pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord bitter in the Royal Oak in Quorn.
Phube Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 As I don't do pubs. My favourites are: Any Badger brewery ones (esp. Fursty ferret) Ubu Adnams Errrm lots of others I can't think of!
orangecity23 Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 I'm partial to a Mad Goose (Purity) , or a Bishops Farewell (Oakham Ales). I'm not a huge real ale drinker, but everyone I work with are hardcore real ale zealots EDIT: As for pubs, if you venture out to Warwickshire (Booo), then try the Merchants Arms in Rugby.
Uncle Phil Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 Plenty of good ales down here in Devon and plenty of good brewery's. I usually drink Doombar, that and Tribute are the usual finds here. We had a beer from Rutland down here not long ago though, Silly Billy I think it was, pretty tasty.
fatboytim Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 If ever you find yourself in the Highlands of Scotland, the Cairngorm brewery has some nice ales.....Sheepshagger is probably my favourite of the ones I tried. Or Ale of Atholl from the Moulin Brewery is also nice.

Stig the Lawnmower Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 Real ales! Blimey where do I start. Hook Norton ales are good, but not always easy to find. I think everards had them as a guest beer recently. Bass is good if kept right, Old inn in littlethorpe sells a good pint. Marstons pedigree, again if kept right - george and dragon in broughton astley sells a nice pint with good guest beers. any Jennings beer is good on draught, brewed up near the lake district, but beware - it makes you fart enough to clear a room!! was in cornwall last year and had a couple of pints of Doom Bar, and i agree it is very good. there's a brewery in dorset called the Piddle Brewery ( there's a local river piddle and various villages with 'piddle' derived names, piddle hinton, north piddle etc) their draught beer is good, and their bottled beer is called 'piddle in a bottle' Sainsburys sell a number of very very good bottled beers brewed by the Bath brewery -they are really good. am a big fan of 'real' ales, and am unfortunately old enough to remember when lagers were a minority drink sold mainly to the ladies with lime in half pint glasses, and most beers were 'real ales' !

The Town Mill micro brewery in Lyme Regis was a treat as well, 2 good ales and a porter.
demon_dog Posted 16 March 2011 Posted 16 March 2011 Ha, Morrisons sell Piddle in a bottle at £1 for very nearly a pint bloody good value. ( not really real ale though as it's best poured from a hand pump or straight out of the barrel.) Again where should I start, i.e. Old Speckled Hen, Spitfire, Bombardier, Broadside to name but a few. My personal favourite however is Wadsworth 6X although not too many pubs near me sell it. In my local I tend to always drink Burton Bitter. Very nice too. However the pub does serve loads of real ales, the Red Lion at Market Bosworth. He, he, I may get a pint for advertising his pub!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 I've tried a few of these mentioned but i can't enjoy them, there room temprature and that erks me
Bridge Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Hated beer when I was young cause our beer was shit way back when. Ruddles County was the first real ale I remember drinking on my first trip across the big lake..had lots of good ones over the years..couple of nice pints of Grainstore Ten-Fifty at the Swan & Rushes last time over.
cambridgefox Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Oakhams -JHB Harviestoun-Bitter and twisted-scottish zesty ale, good for a summer session beer(sainsburys sell it) TRY IT and let me know what you think as its different Fullers-London pride Morland-Old speckled hen
Ashley Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 I'm only a young'un but is Newcastle Brown a 'reak ale' my dad got me started on that.
cambridgefox Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 I'm only a young'un but is Newcastle Brown a 'reak ale' my dad got me started on that. Its open to debate, some say yes some say no also classed as a brown ale which just means it is lightly hopped.
Nick Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 They used to do a nice pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord bitter in the Royal Oak in Quorn. Yes they did.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 any Jennings beer is good on draught, brewed up near the lake district, but beware - it makes you fart enough to clear a room!! I've never noticed that, perhaps I fart a lot anyway. Jennings beers are ace, they sometimes have them in the Lansdowne but they're much, much better in the pubs closer to where they're brewed in my experience. The tour of their brewery you can go on is ace. Also up there is the Coniston brewery, in, wait for it, Coniston, which I think is out the back of one of the main pubs there. Their Bluebird Bitter is marvellous although it's a while since I've seen it anywhere around these parts
BrummieFOX Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Absolutely love a good ale. I live in Digbeth, Birmingham which pretty much has a pub on every corner with a fair few CAMRA award winning. Also popularity increasing which is great to see.
The Padster Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Went to the Leicester Beer Festival last Saturday, I just didn't know where to start! Had a bloody beautiful blackcurrant stout from Northamptonshire and a tasty dark mild from Nottingham, the rest were good but didn't stick in my head after the night was done .
FoxyPV Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness).
Uncle Phil Posted 17 March 2011 Posted 17 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness). It's not warm, it's just not so cold you can't taste it. I'd say it's cool, because it works on a number of levels
