Zingari Posted 18 March 2011 Posted 18 March 2011 Oi!!! It's delightful I'm sure it is but why keep giving beers all these ridiculous names that have absolutely no relevance to the product ? i suppose it keeps the beardy pipe smoking fogies in camra amused and doesn't do any real harm though
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness). Read a book.
ajthefox Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Couldn't really name any but I had some Timothy Taylor's Landlord which someone else mentioned on st patricks day because I didn't want to do lager and it was actually very nice.
I am Rod Hull Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness). Lager is a girls drink....
Christoph Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Cant stand the taste of ale and most beers tbh. They just dont have a nice taste imo.
Parafox Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness). I enjoy some real ales. I can't say I have ever had a warm, flat real ale. Admittedly they don't have the ice-cold childish fizz of lagers but it's about depth of flavour and style and ingredients not just manufactured gassed up pop. All lagers taste very similar IMHO and because they're served so cold they have no real flavour. Also getting fed up with breweries doing ice-cold gas pumped (rather than hand-pulled) bitters. WHY??? might just as well be feckin lager. It ruins the beer When you're older you'll understand
ajthefox Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Lager is a girls drink.... I know you were responding to someone else's stereotype but give it a rest mate, I really can't be doing with this drinking snobbery. Anyone over the age of about 16 drinking alcopops all the time is a little feminine I'll agree but there's nothing wrong with a good pint of lager or a smooth and more flavoured ale.
cambridgefox Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Pint for the fella, glass of white wine/fruit based drink for the lady. I hold my hands up i do like my real ale,but i will also drink lager and wine, depends on the weather, mood im in,what im eating. But given the choice in a pub real ale,bbq hot day fizzy piss!
Zingari Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 if real ale is so good , why does the crap burst out of me like a flock of starlings next day ?
The Doctor Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 if real ale is so good , why does the crap burst out of me like a flock of starlings next day ? because you drank too much/didn't eat enough?
Zingari Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 because you drank too much/didn't eat enough? i often drink too much lager but it never affects me in the same way
Stig the Lawnmower Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 Warm and flat. No thanks. I'll stick to lager (and Guinness). being cold is what generates the taste in lager. try a warm pint, taste goes, its fooking awful!
lcfcadam Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 being cold is what generates the taste in lager. try a warm pint, taste goes, its fooking awful! In reality you're right, but technically it's the other way round (taste-wise anyway). The colder lager gets, the less perceptible the underlying bitter hop (and often chemical, in cheap ones) tastes are, making it a more palatable drink. It just happens to be that MOST decent real ales are crafted in such a way that serving them slightly warmer than ice-cold (definitely not room temperature, ever!) brings out more tastes that are actually pleasant rather than revolting. So being cold actually removes certain tastes from lager, but they're not tastes you'd want on your palate so it makes sense to get it pretty cold because it's a much more enjoyable drink that way.
lcfcadam Posted 20 March 2011 Posted 20 March 2011 if real ale is so good , why does the crap burst out of me like a flock of starlings next day ? That's probably because most decent real ales are much more lively than lagers - bottle / cask conditioned ones for example may even still have some living yeast in them. It's not an unhealthiness in the drink that causes your 'flock', but more the fact your stomach gets excited when something so 'alive' gets poured into it. Do hope I'm not sounding like a boring beer-geek here... (I'm quick to add that I'd never say ale's necessarily better than lager or anything like that: my mantra is ALL GOOD BEER IS GOOD BEER)

But i just don't take beer drinking very seriously . I just drink what I like the taste of on the day.( be it real ale or lager ) but if the camra crowd like Keith Williams et al find it fulfulling to extol the virtues of real ale , then fair play to them And yes , you're probably right, the yeastiness of real ale is probably the reason for my embarrassing emissions cheers
The Doctor Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Gotta say, I've really grown to love this shit in recent months, in particular BrewDog brewery - they produce some lovely stuff, e.g. Tactical Nuclear Penguin,
Rincewind Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Had some 7.4% yesterday. EPA New zealand brewed in the UK. Forget brewery ATM but posted in another thread. Not a big lover of lager. And to me cold is so wrong. I just like sampling all the different types. There are some lovely porters about and chocolate stouts. The other week I had a dark IPA. Looking forward to the Leicester Beer Festival next month. May be working there again. Nothing else to do and volunteers get free beer. There will be something like 200 beers to choose from again. You do get people asking for lagers though of which there are one or two special ones. We do draw a line at having some drinks though. Someone last year asked for John Smiths.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 if real ale is so good , why does the crap burst out of me like a flock of starlings next day ? If you feel that the bottom has fallen out of your world, drink real ale and feel the world fall out of your bottom.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 The Rebellion Brewery is only a mile from home, and one can buy direct at a good price.
Uncle Phil Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 The Narborough Arms has had Doombar, Black Sheep Bitter and Wadsworth 6X in for the last couple of weeks. Three cracking beers there.
goose2010 Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Was never a fan of real ale until I met my misses I am with now. Her Dad is a massive real ale fan and because of this I thought I best start trying it. Eventually I got there and actually would rather go for a real ale than a larger these days. There are some corkers out there and I think my favourite local brewery (to me anyway) is church end Brewery and it does help that there brewers tap is in Stoke Golding and is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. We are actually going as far as having our own beer brewed by Church End Brewery for our wedding. We are having a grooms beer and a Brides beer and being a designer/printer I am currently working on the labels for them if anyone has any ideas I would listen to suggestions!

skinnydipper Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Sold in Waitrose at Oadby for about £1.90 a bottle. Shall be buying a few for Thursday evening.
Rincewind Posted 21 February 2012 Posted 21 February 2012 Got Doombar in the one in Leicester opposite Molly O Gradys. The Goose. Its OK but there are better. Selling it dirt cheap a few weeks ago. Thought they were trying to get rid of the barrel but they still have it and increased the price. Seen it in O'Neills as well.
