The Doctor Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Large Al- surely there will be plenty of other games that will be played in preparation? Not bothered how much it'll cost, the chance to see us play them is too good to turn down. The only thing that could've bettered this would have been by having it in Madrid! so you'd pay 30+ quid to watch real madrids second string side, because that's all they're going to field.
Kitchandro Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 I thought that Stringer and Youngy were Leicester fans and understood how the fans feel, but I guess I was wrong.
gazfox9 Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Can't see anything but good in the idea. Can't think of one reason why its a bad idea. Granted I don't think we can expect Madrids strongest 11 but it'll be a certain sell-out and should put a few quid in the clubs coffers.
Haydos Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 so you'd pay 30+ quid to watch real madrids second string side, because that's all they're going to field. Bit cynical. Do you not think there'll have been any sort of agreement between the two parties, even a gentleman's handshake that they'll field a fair few of the bigger stars? Barca did and tbh even Madrid's 2nd string would be the best thing we've seen down there.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 26 April 2011 Author Posted 26 April 2011 LargeAl- you don't know that, but even then, yes I would. How many times have you seen us against them? Im paying 25 to see coalville at wembley, purely because it'll never happen again. Kitchandro- of course they're fans, but to me there were things that the announcement was never going to be- viera, beckham, mancini coming in and sven moving upstairs, stadium expansion etc! Yeh if someone has got out of bed, or had to go out and buy a radio just to listen in this morning, I could understand em being a bit peeved off

The likes of Kaka, Higauin, Gaga would be great even if the likes of Ronaldo, Ramos and Ozil were left home.
Donut Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Dont want to wizz on everyones bonfire but the la liga season starts later than our domestic seasons, so the Real boys will probably only just back into training. I would think it would be highly unlikely we will be seeing the ronaldo's, sergio ramos', ozil's, marcelo's etc

Gotta admit I would too,as their reserves are probably still a far better side than pretty much any championship side we've seen this season. And IF we did get any kind of result, well that'd be a tale for the grandkids in 30 years!!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Gets us in the spotlight once again. Our owners showing the footballing world that we mean business. Big name friendlies, big name sponsors (singha) etc...... can only help to attract a higher standard of player. Its all good as far as I'm concerned ! Not really. Nobody outside of Leicestershire will take any notice. It won't make the news nationally, won't be featured on telly and the good people of Madrid will possibly not even be aware of it yet, with those who are consulting maps of the UK just to find out where Leicester actually is. (TBF, I reckon a fair amount of people here couldn't pinpoint Madrid on a map of Spain ("Oooooh, it's in Spain!" )) But Al is too negative. They'll play some of their stars. Puyol is the best defender I've ever seen at the Walkers (Though Vitor could give him a run for his money in years to come) and I'm pretty sure Ronaldinho, Xavi and Saviola played too. It will be a mix of players needing to get match fit or prove they're worth a place in the team.
Bilbo Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 It'll be nice to see a team with as much quality as Real Madrid has play us, but to be honest it's not the sort of thing that as a Leicester fan I want to focus on. For me the priority now should be stripping down the team (ie chosing which of the loanees stay and which don't) and strengthening the team where it needs it. Concentrating on big screens, extending the stadium and pre-season friendlies are just distractions taking focus away from the aspect that matters most to the club - the team.

FoxyPV Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 It's a great fixture (not deserving of Stringer's hype). I'd rather meet them in a competetive fixture though
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 BBC Daily Mail It's not on BBC telly. It's not in print in the Mail. The internet is cheap news where everything gets mentioned briefly. Show me a match report in a national newpaper the day after and I'll eat my hat.
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 I can't understand how anybody can think it's a bad idea. We have to play pre-season friendlies why not get one which is going to bring in a good amount of revenue to the club and allow City fans to see quality players of their generation in the flesh. Anybody who thinks this is a bad idea is bonkers in my opinion. Absolute bonkers.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Anyway, this isn't the point. The point is our loal radio station (and apparently quite a lot of people on here) regard watching Real Madrid as a massive thing for Leicester fans. I find it a bit wrong that that's the priority for people in this City - seeing Real Madrid is more important than seeing their own Club play a competitive match. It's that principle that I don't agree with, and that is linked to all the kids being lured into glory supporting. I agree with you in a way, but on the other hand this is potentially the European and Spannish Cup Champions (and who knows about the league) and with Real Madrid being a massive club in it's own right of course the advertising is billed towards them more than Leicester. When you add on the fact that the chances of us playing them for real, in a meaningful game is slim for at least a couple of years, it is a massive thing for Leicester to be able to play them. As long as Leicester are mentioned within the billing (such as see your Leicester take on REAL MADRID) I don't think you can complain too much.

To get a team like Real Madrid to play at the Walkers must have taken a considerably amount of effort, cash and negotiating. At this point in the season we should be putting all these factors into preparing/getting players signed and building a team that could one day face Real Madrid competitively.

Who knows what weird and wonderful characters are putting our name about in these powerful circles today.
Guest Bilo Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 Personally feel that we should be going for big games at home. A full stadium will have more of a big game feel for the players and will surely be better in this respect than 6000 rattling around in the West Stand watching us play a mid-table Prem side. It's a chance to showcase the club and its players to the city at large, so yes, why not? I doubt we'll get hammered because it's unlikely Real will be anything like as up for it as our players are and they'll treat it as a training exercise. Pretty pleased overall. Smaller teams away from home though please.
ajthefox Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 It'll be good for the club and the team and anyone thinking it's a bad idea is looney, but I'm only going if the price is right.
acooling08 Posted 26 April 2011 Posted 26 April 2011 How can people see it as bad? The news after the big build up was a big let down, but you can't see the fixture as a bad thing.
topharry123 Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 Fantastic idea. Ticket sales will be through the roof for a pre season game and it gives our young players a chance to get some experience playing and being around some of the worlds best players. No real Leicester fan could think it's a bad idea, unless they miss out on a ticket!
Happy Fox Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Leicester-owners-have-lured-Real-Madrid-to-play-pre-season-friendly-for-1-million-article728322.html Sven Goran Eriksson will face Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid after his Leicester bosses coughed up £1million. The Swedish One will take on the Special One, after the Foxes’ ambitious Thai owners stumped up the cash to lure the Spanish giants for a pre-season clash. Former England boss Eriksson will take on Mourinho in the high-profile friendly at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday, July 30. By then, Mourinho could be the first boss to have lifted the Champions League on three occasions – as Real face rivals Barcelona in the competition’s semi-finals, starting tonight. Leicester owners Vichai and Top Raksriaksorn have worked overtime to land a prestige name. They see it as the perfect way to prepare for a serious Premier League promotion bid next season. They have also made it clear they are ready to invest heavily again in the Championship side they bought from Milan Mandaric last year. Eriksson’s name has helped secure the deal for Los Blancos to travel to England, as well as ex-Chelsea manager Mourinho’s links with the Premier League. Real have promised to fly over all of their star names to play against Leicester. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil are all expected to play, as Eriksson puts the finishing touches to the Foxes’ preparations for a promotion push from the Championship. The fixture comes eight years after the Foxes hosted Barcelona in a friendly at the Walkers Stadium. On that occasion, 32,086 supporters watched Barca play at Leicester’s home.

At this point in the season we should be putting all these factors into preparing/getting players signed and building a team that could one day face Real Madrid competitively. I know where you are coming from but this is all part of a much bigger picture. First it will probably sell out and will raise our profile not just with potential spectators but with agents and players. Secondly I have no doubt that the game will be shown on Tv in parts of asia where the owners want LCFC to become a brand name for them to raise their own business profile. Thirdly It is very much a statement of intent. It is saying look we can get this type of friendly, backed up by idle press speculation of a mad summer spending spree it is all part of saying we are serious about getting to the premier league. Players who we may want to sign and might be wavering between us and another club will be able to look at this match and other things that will no doubt be happening and say to themselves yes this club is serious in its ambitions. We need to build a team and develop with a good pre season fixture list and not just attempt to buy it mid way through the season. We need to be playing against the best quality opposition we can as part of a pre season build up . I really don't see that there is anything bad or negative about this fixture. None of this means we will storm the league next year and I acknowledge there are those fans who don't like the way we are going but at this exact moment we have a very high profile manager with owners who seem determined to make this club into a premier league outfit with an identified brand image at the very least in Thailand and I think we simply have to go along with the ride and enjoy it whilst we can; we can really do nothing else.
MrSpaM Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 If the possibility of playing a full strengh Real Madrid dosnt encourage players to join us in the summer i don't know what will.
