sven-your-smiling Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Hi all, just a couple of months ago matt oakley was sat on the bench with no leicester fans particulary liking him. now hes got a place in the starting line up and scored 2 in 2 games. He has really come on as a player since sven has joined and works well with wellens now. i dont know why he has useless end of last season and start of this season. but then as soon as sven comes in hes brilliant. any suggestions?????????????/

People have plenty of other scape goats to pin the blame on at the moment so his role as villain currently isn't needed.
cairnsy Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 I think he's just on form but he's always been capable, like said above he's just a scapegoat when we lose
Jakemoore Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 He's never been bad, he's so committed to winning, he's always had that about his game, he'd probably break his own leg to save us losing. However, he does seem to have improved technically, maybe he's learn something from watching Gally striking the ball or the YAK etc...
Unit Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 I'll admit that like a lot of people when Sven gave him an extension my heart sank a little bit, I thought he was past it.... he's proved me wrong!!
Fox92 Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Not sure about posts above because I thought he has been bad at times, but he's not on his own. He seems to have got fitter now though, scoring two goals in the process. I've always liked him as a footballer, ever since his days with Southampton and Derby.

He was never useless, I agree People didn't like the fact he applauded Derby fans on his return to Pride Park Whilst his previous performances obviously weren't always great, he was never bad IMO

The Padster Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Whilst his previous performances obviously weren't always great, he was never bad IMO This. Whilst he has/will never tear the league apart he has never been so shockingly bad on such a consistant basis to warrant some of the shit chucked his way. He's just an average hard-working Championship player, with a wealth of experience to pass on to the kids. The experience being the main reason I'd keep him as squad player.

shiv Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 I'll be the first to admit I gave him a lot of stick earlier in the season. However, he has proved me wrong with some fantastic performances and has been consistently one of our best players in the last few games.
lcfcsnow Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 He has been great in the past month but the fact is he went over 2 years without scoring, and really did look on his last legs. I don't know where the extra burst of energys come from, but I still think we're a better team without him. (and it showed on Monday).
Fox You Forest Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Just as I won't get carried away with a handful of shaky performances from Bruma I won't get carried away with a couple of decent performances from Oakley, he's an adequate back up, nothing more nothing less.
Wymsey Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 I don't question him as a captain, but his performances have been mostly average and poor, and he doesn't have much good impact on the game, amongst others at times such as Dyer for example.
Stadt Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Earlier on in the season he gave the ball away so often i was scared when he had the ball at his feet but he has improved recently and deserves his place. I haven't seen his goal against palace any chance of anybody posting it?
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 There seems to be an absence on this board of people who admit to criticising Oakley over the past three seasons. Certainly from conversations I've been having over the past three years I've heard the lad get nothing but stick. Where are all these people now? I've got to come forward and own up to the fact that I've not been happy with his performances at times during that period. My major complaint against him, which has come up from time to time over the past three years, is that he can have a tendency to look disinterested. Pride Park last year didn't help his cause either. I can appreciate his eagerness to show affection to a club he clearly enjoyed his time at, but that day was the worst day for it, it was a crap team display and he was as much to blame as everyone else. It rankled me a bit. That being said I've not been one of the worst criticising him. Largely because I've got a bit of sympathy for him because some players, Gallagher's another good example, who's game isn't all about running their socks off and sticking their foot in, tend to get a bad rap from fans when things turn sour. When in reality players like that (more talent than energy) can be a lot more effective than people such as Iain Hume who'll run themselves into the ground every game and become a fan's favourite whatever happens. When Oakley's on form (and in position) he's a class act - a really clever player. I don't know what's changed at the minute but against Forest and Watford he's probably had his two best games for the club. Long may it continue!
Haydos Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 God forbid Sven getting any praise for bringing out the best in him, Gally and Naughts though.
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 God forbid Sven getting any praise for bringing out the best in him, Gally and Naughts though. Probably is the man. Gally's had a great season as well.
Guest Col city fan Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 God forbid Sven getting any praise for bringing out the best in him, Gally and Naughts though. Oakley has done well over April... NOT the future of the midfield though as has been mentioned before on here by many posters... Me included
Babylon Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 God forbid Sven getting any praise for bringing out the best in him, Gally and Naughts though. We don't talk about that, we talk about mardy arses like Hobbs and Fryatt.
Corky Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 He was never that bad, and has shown he can be a back-up when needed.
bigneville Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 I think people are getting carried away about how well he played during April. He was still too slow to move the ball on, and often had to make long-busting runs to correct mistakes he had made. His midfield play as a general rule over the season has been below the standard we require here, and it has been since mid-to-end of last season. Matt Oakley's time is coming to an end, and i'm sure he was only given a contract extension to be a back-up player, and help develop Andy King with the captains role. Anyone who believes that Matt Oakley will be a key part of our midfield next season is clearly deluded. He may still have a role to play off-field and may make the odd contribution when first choice players are injured or suspended, but overall, he isn't going to get much pitch time as he's legs get another year older and slower. I still don't believe he should have been given a year extension based on his form over the season, and the last 3/4 games won't change that for me. Matt Oakley has done a fantastic job helping to take Leicester City from it's lowest point to one of the most exciting times at the club in recent years, but it's not time for the baton to be handed over to a new breed, and for him to take a step back. I thank him for all he's done, but feel he needs to move over now.

SPF07 Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 No coincidence that Oakley was missing and we won again?! (Good post above, sense) Nor was it that when we were playing square pegs round holes - Abe on right side we struggled and had wellens not gone off would have lost the game.

Agree completely with that. Abe on the wing? About as effective as Oakley was when Pearson played him out there.
