Greg2607 Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I have just seen an interesting point made on another forum, in the sense that there are potentially 31 Players who could exit the club over the summer (including the loan players who have recently departed). As such, as a club, we have a massive rebuilding job with the need for some upper quartile talent that will ultimately drive us on to bigger and better things as well as squad talent and developing the youngsters. It seems like a scary prospect that this number of players might be needed!! Van Anaholt Vitor Bruma Naughton Yakubu Mee Kamara All 7 finish their loans…………. Potential free transfers in the coming weeks. Alexsander Tunchev Tom Parkes Jorin John Ashley Chambers Liam Moore Aman Verma Ricardo Robert Ambrusics Luke ONeil Craig KIng Adi Yuseff Daniel Uchechi Elliot Chamberlain 13 more players Expected to leave in the summer Robbie Neilson Moreno Steve Howard Conrad Logan Bruno Berner Danny N’gussan Tom kennedy Michael Lamey Jack Hobbs Leon Crnic Yann Kermogant Another 11 31 Players could depart realistically. 13 professionals remaining!!! I'm not suggesting that these players are irreplacable, or even that they add much value to the squad in terms of a promotion push, but it is a significant amount of recruitment that may need to take place.
m00nie Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 most of them have not been part of the set up anyway so its not major if alot of them did leave anyway..
FuriousFox46 Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 About 75% of those haven't even seen the bench this season. I think we'll survive.
Greg2607 Posted 9 May 2011 Author Posted 9 May 2011 I agree with both of you in terms of the fact that these players aren't neccessarily first team regulars, or indeed that close to the first team, but it does strike me that we have either bought a significant amount of dross over the last few years (which is probably a given!!) or that there isnt much opportunity for the fringe players to develop, especially given the lack of a reserve team. Regardless of whether they contribute significantly to the first team, it is still a lot of players to replace. You could argue that players who are significantly better than those listed are not going to want to come to the club to be "bit part" squad players. It does worry me that we may end up with a slightly threadbare squad. Not least as we will be facing significant competition to sign the loan players that Sven wants to sign on a permanent basis. I would hate to be in the situation where we are doing the majority of our summer transfer business towards the end of the transfer window and scrabbling around for enough players to put a squad together. I do recognise that players like Schlupp and Taft may feature more regularly in the senior squad, but do we have many more academy players that are likely to be promoted?
ithuriel Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 think we will go for a smaller, more quality squad rather than a huge number of players that will never get a shout.
MrSpaM Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I'm just waiting for Sven to decide Kermo is going to be our first choice striker next season
Austin Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I'm just waiting for Sven to decide Kermo is going to be our first choice striker next season Kermo was decent ......................
Guy Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 think we will go for a smaller, more quality squad rather than a huge number of players that will never get a shout. Quite possibly that will be a better approach to next season as a lot of Pearson's squad, some from our League one days (Howard, Berner, Neilson, Oakley) that Sven inherited may be going on to pastures new now, the same with some of Sousa's flops (Moreno, Lamey, etc)...... but as the winter months kick in then injuries tend to come along with that, that is when we need a big squad. QPR showed how it could be done with a smallish squad but they were relatively lucky with their small level of injuries this season really.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I used to think there was only so much stupidity in the world. I was wrong.

LCFCMickey Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 We're losing a lot of players that have never been part of Sven's plans anyway... so biggy. Yanns contract will expire next year, but he was potential bit of 'tasty' business for Pearson. Sven will have no time for him. Other players we'll be losing will be form the top end of the academy/now reserves bunch. Which is always propped by new youngsters coming in and the rest getting older. We'll be fine.
cc_star Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Lets hope the vast majority of them do depart, its a ridiculpus number of players to have hanging round, drawing a wage & contributing nothing of note I do think there's some merit in retaining players like Berner, Neilson & Howard etc (who recently signed an extension) who could have a part to play - However it's known that both Neilson & Berner want/need first team football so won't be happy to stick around & be bit-part players
Guest Col city fan Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 think we will go for a smaller, more quality squad rather than a huge number of players that will never get a shout. It's always very risky relying on a smallish squad. All it takes is a couple of longer term injuries to key players and you're knackered. I do agree that we have a lot of deadwood at the club that needs to move on as they are not good enough and are not in svens plans, or so it would seem. However they do need to be replaced with good standard signings or we may suffer the price of having to rely on semi-fit players because there's insufficient quality bodies to replace them.. It's like walking a tightrope relying on relatively few
stevelcfc Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Isn't Ucheci one for the future? yh he was brought in on loan in january so sven could a closer look at him.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 relating to? Any belief that that we will "realistically" be releasing 31 players. 20 tops (including the loanees) and that's stretching it.
Fox92 Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Kermo was decent ...................... I'd be happy for most of them players to leave. Obviously want the loan players back but this summer will be interesting.
ta-fc Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I don't see what your problem is last I checked we only needed 11 to play a match that gives us two subs... Sorry forgot The Championship was different to sunday league!
Greg2607 Posted 10 May 2011 Author Posted 10 May 2011 Any belief that that we will "realistically" be releasing 31 players. 20 tops (including the loanees) and that's stretching it. I dont remember using the word "realistically". I said that there was the potential that all of those players could be released. And IF so, then it is a significant amount of recruitment to take place. Surely even "20 tops" is a large number of players to have to replace. Now i'm sure some will come up through the academy and be offered first year professional contracts, and i'm sure some players like schlupp will make a breakthrough. But given that there was such a feeling of negativity around how many loan players we took in this year, (and i think there is talk around the quota of loan players allowed being reduced) you would expect that we will make a number of permanent signings. Some of these will come at a cost and some will be on a free, but either way, it IS a significant amount of activity that will have to take place. I see us being linked to the likes of Huddlestone etc, but can only see these types of deals being ursurped by the more established prem teams, potentially leaving us scrabbling around at the end of the transfer window trying to do business.

You are correct I think, there will be a significant amount of activity. There doesn't HAVE to be ie. certain players I'm sure probably would stay, but Sven appears to have made it clear he doesn't fancy them.... Neilsen, Berner (maybe even Hobbs) for example. Again, this doesn't bode well for a SETTLED squad.... however, I think that Sven is correct in realising that the overall ability of the squad needs improving. So a clear-out is needed. Its gonna be interesting without a doubt and don't be too surprised if we don't come out of the blocks particularly quickly. Any team/squad, especially when containing lots of new faces (which ours potentially could) needs time to gel. We must be patient because I don't think we'll see the best of a new squad until at least October time, if not Christmas.

Sven has mentioned in an article today that there wont be a "revolution" with the squad and that the core of it will remain the same. Not sure I quite believe this, for a start, there is an absolute minimum requirement to replace the loanee defenders that existed, unless he thinks that they will be signed permanently or allowed back for a second loan spell. Further to this, the need to replace the Yak and Kamara (again unless he decides to sign them permanently and is successful in doing so) will mean more activity. And all this before we even start to look at the "squad" players. I'm not being alarmist here, and recognise that some of this is part of the churn of a professional football club, but I wonder where the investment will come from and indeed if it is sustainable. The clubs coming down this year (whoever that may be) will be lucky enough to be part of the new parachute payments. It does strike me, that in order to get out of the division will require significant and astute investment. The thai owners are clearly looking to improve the overall structure of the club and the investment into new screens etc will undoubtedly be a commercial decision that should attract further advertising revenue. I just hope they dont get nervous if we dont achieve promotion next year.

I just hope they dont get nervous if we dont achieve promotion next year. I think its important not to start worrying excessively. Sven will know what money is available and who his targets are. As 'punters' we are not party to inside info of this nature and therefore must trust that the club is being run sensibly. The next few weeks will remain interesting in terms of who we are being linked with, who may be leaving and staying and so forth. As I said, come about October time I think we'll have a more clear picture on whether we are going to be succesful or not. This, for me, is about balance...its about not unduly worrying at this point, but its also about not making wild predictions that we are going to 'romp the league' and the such like. Just sit back, hold tight and see what pans out...
Guest Col city fan Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 ah.....the proverbial LCFC roller coaster! I posted the same thing after the Ipswich game...and what a roller coaster that was.. At least it makes it interesting...would you really want to be a Man Utd fan and win everything that goes year on year on year? Don't think I would...even winning can get boring over time.
artursteppe Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 It is to be remembered that whoever we buy will retain a residual value. That value could increase if the player is young, or cheap ( like Sol Bamba ). It will diminish often if the player is older. Sven will be wise, not rash. If we were somehow to buy Tom Huddlestone for example it would only be at such a price ( value ) that could be retained whilst he is our player. Where we would not get a return on investment would be through players' wages - unless of course we win promotion, which is the objective. Our Board ( and Sven ) will know this. Do not be surprised to see several players sold to help finance those coming in. A decent offer for Wellens should be considered if we got one, he is approaching 32 and is not going to get quicker or better. King and Gallagher by contrast both could improve, so too Yuki Abe. Matt Oakley and Steve Howard will not get more valuable where Frank Moussa might. The loanees we had will all be better players next season if any can be retained. Wellens, Oakley, Howard, Moussa and King, I believe, have all had new contracts under Sven. The Mercury would tell you that means they are in Sven's plans for the future. That indeed may be the case. On the other hand, Sven has increased their sale price with those contracts if he wants to sell any of them. Although a £1.5m offer for Waggy would seem to be a loss, Jeffrey Schlupp who could replace him has cost us very little so far. Another way Sven will operate will be to try to bring on board players who are out of contract or 'cheap' ( if £2m should be the price for Yukubu that is cheap ). Although, for example, Kamara and Westwood ( both out of contract ) would command a high income, we as a club would retain a potential 'sell-on' value which could compare with their on-going cost to us. Likewise Yukubu - if we bought him for as little as £2m and paid him £2m next season, could have a value of £4m or £5m in a year's time. Good game!
