Derby County are closing in on a deal for Kilmarnock midfielder Craig Bryson, BBC Radio Derby understands.

The club's initial bid for the Scotland international was rejected but the Rams are still keen and are set to return with an improved offer.

Bryson, 24, has played 135 games for Killie, scoring 14 goals.

But attempts to sign Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire are being delayed by both the ash cloud problems and his international commitments.

Derby County and Kilmarnock are close to agreeing a deal that will lead to Craig Bryson completing his move to the English Championship club.

Further talks have taken place between the two clubs over the financial compensation Killie would receive for the loss of their captain.

BBC Scotland understands the Rugby Park club could be in line to receive an initial transfer fee of £350,000.

Kilmarnock could be due a further sum of about £100,000 based on appearances.

The Scotland midfielder is expected to sign a three-year contract with Derby.

It is understood the Championship club had already had two offers rejected by Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston.

The 24-year-old is under contract to the Ayrshire outfit until the summer of 2013.

Bryson, who has played 135 games for Killie, was the subject of a couple of bids from Hearts last summer, but Johnston rejected the offers from their SPL rivals.

The midfielder joined Kilmarnock from Clyde in 2007 and made his Scotland debut as a substitute against the Faroe Islands in November.

Derby are aiming for a double raid on Scotland's top flight, although their attempt to sign Aberdeen and Scotland striker Chris Maguire has not yet been completed because of the Dons' compensation demand for the 22-year-old.

Bryson could become the second major departure from Rugby Park this week after defender Frazer Wright joined SPL rivals St Johnstone on freedom of contract.

I see the fact that no-one has heard of him, seen him play or can give an informed judgement of him has stopped some people from making up their minds based on the league he came from.

Chris Smalling moved from Maidstone to Fulham. He must have been shit, he came from non-league
