Finnegan Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 You no doubt can guess my take on it Let them all stay in specialist "holiday homes" and not worry yourself about the minor hiss in the shower?
Fosse Boy Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 Denmark obviously doesn't value middle distance track athletics like it used to.
Zingari Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 i bet he don't spend many januarys in jutland i didn't realise how cold cold could actually be until i spent a winter there
shen Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 ... in an attempt to control the mass influx of north african refugees entering the country. What are everyone's view? Should this be allowed under EU law? You no doubt can guess my take on it Didn't realise it would create such a big fuss. It's being blown out of proportion. Norway and Sweden's border has been like the proposed German-Danish border for years now and nobody's said anything. The 'mass influx' thing is actually a French and Italian initiative and the populistic nationalistic Danish People's Party are only too happy to support it, but smuggling and toll evasion are the real issues. We hardly get any North African refugees. But basically it's all symbolic politics anyway. Our minority right-wing government is in dire straits and polls show that they stand to lose the upcoming elections which would remove the DPP from their powerful position. These are their last desperate attempts to win a few votes really...
shen Posted 14 May 2011 Posted 14 May 2011 i bet he don't spend many januarys in jutland i didn't realise how cold cold could actually be until i spent a winter there He actually moved to Monaco shortly after gaining Danish citizenship. He was able to profit from a tax loophole as a professional athlete and some Danes have actually been aggrieved by his actions. I see no problem with it though, he 'did his time' and became a Danish citizen in a legitimate manner. Whatever he chooses to do after that doesn't matter to me. And is Jutland really that much colder than Scotland or northern England?

MPH Posted 20 May 2011 Posted 20 May 2011 On a side note, Denmark are doing nothing different to what the UK is doing in protecting its borders and insisting on the illegal refugee camps on the edge of calais being broken up... Denmark really is a wonderful country, with kind people and its very clean. I can see exactly why someone would want to go there. They also have a socialised medical system as we do and i wonder if this would be a contributing factor too...

MPH Posted 20 May 2011 Posted 20 May 2011 That wouldn't last if they didn't protect their borders. so all refugees are mean and dirty?
FoxyPV Posted 20 May 2011 Posted 20 May 2011 That wouldn't last if they didn't protect their borders. It does because they are so heavily taxed, and generally in my limited experience of Denmark have a far better attitude to health etc than the UK. Prevention is better than cure. The immigration laws regarding residency are incredibly strict anyway. We were at a friend's wedding last year and the person I was sitting beside, who was Danish and their kids were Danish, was explaining to me how her husband (American) was refused residency because he had not spent enough time in Denmark and the most of his work was in the USA. They definitely weren't going to be signing on.
Fosse Boy Posted 20 May 2011 Posted 20 May 2011 That wouldn't last if they didn't protect their borders. Do you, like, get your world view based on a compilation of Daily Express political cartoons?
shen Posted 21 May 2011 Posted 21 May 2011 That wouldn't last if they didn't protect their borders. What on earth has protecting borders got to do with the cleanliness and health care systems of a country? If anything is driving down the latter it's pure demographics. And immigration is the easiest and cheapest way to redress birth rate issues.

To re-iterate, as far as I've understood, we're implementing procedures which are similar in extent to the Norwegian/Swedish border, both of whom are in the Schengen agreement. While I don't like the political statement it sends out, I really don't see the fuss when others have been doing it for years. And amusingly politicians here are quick to dispel fears that we will have 'British conditions' here
Alexikokopops Posted 21 May 2011 Posted 21 May 2011 I wish I could impose border control on Foxestalk
JimmyK Posted 21 May 2011 Posted 21 May 2011 Denmark have always been very cautious with immigration, it's Sweden showing signs of becoming less tolerant towards it that's more surprising.
