Shay Given

Its crazy that people would say no to given. Only two/three years back he was the best keeper in the prem. And now hes only 34/35 and hes too old! Nonsense! Hes got 5 years left in him still! Sign him up! A keeper and a right back must be top priority this summer!

Manchester City's unsettled goalkeeper Shay Given may be tempted to drop down to the Championship with Leicester City.

Celtic remain favourites to sign the 35-year-old, but a source close to the Premier League club believes joining City could be an option if the right offer comes along.

Given has become increasingly frustrated by his lack of first-team action at Eastlands, compounded by a shoulder injury which ruled him out of the second half of the campaign.

Joe Hart is fully established as City's and England's No.1 keeper, making Given arguably the best stand-in among the Premier League clubs.

"It's going to be hard to budge Joe Hart from the shirt," said the club insider. "Leicester would be an option for him, but it might be a long shot."

Given is now back to fitness, featuring for the Republic of Ireland last week as they won the Carling Nations Cup without conceding a goal.

The former Newcastle and Sunderland keeper had also been linked with a move to Tottenham.

However, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp yesterday secured 40-year-old Aston Villa keeper Brad Friedel on a two-year contract.

Eriksson wants another keeper and was linked this week with Egypt's Hassam El-Hanary.

i dont want him if he is on £100,000 a week, he is 34 i think, yes he is a great keeper but i would prefer someone like westwood who would be on about £10,000 - £15,000 a week.

What is even more ridiculous in the world of Premier League goal keepers is that Cudicini is now number 3 in the pecking order at Spurs. Have a word Sven.

We need to sort some more realistic signings out first, for instance proven players at this level, It seems the "Big" signings may be scuppered due to wage demands!

The stigma of playing for a CCC team has ebbed away over the last few years with the influx of serious money being bandied about.

For the Irish team I don't think Trappatoni is bothered too much by the player's team or where that team is (CCC or Prem), as long as there is quality on show.

So either Shay's agent is playing a clever game of come and get me from Prem teams or for Celtic to improve their potential offer by playing the 'I'd play in the CCC if the right offer came in.

Shay played very well under Sven, so I think their relationship should be good. Surely no one can realistically say he's past it? He's the wrong side of 30 yes, but with this comes years of being a captain, experience with a variety of different defences, and a invaluable level of composure and communication which money cannot buy.

There are detractors out there saying he would be on too much wages, but the one area that is questionable is the GK position.

If we did get Westwood in, does he he have the experience and composure to deal with a promotion bid with the money that's at stake? If I was Top and Co & Sven would you want solid dependability or take a gamble?

This would be in my view the second most important signing this summer after our Chief Executive.

I would very much like to see Given here at the Walkers. Yes he is 35 yrs but he easily has a very good 2 or 3 season's left in him (which is a long time in football), and he isn't overly injury prone like some aging players. His experience is second to none and the bottom line is he is still a top, top goalkeeper. Come the play offs or the end of the season he would be worth his weight in gold. I would certainly pay him the money the Yak was/is on and maybe a bit more.

If Given won't come or someone like him can't be persuaded, then we might as well go for potential and try and sign someone like Kasper or Westwood.

But he won't be on 100k here would he? And Westwood wouldn't be on 10-15k here.

Westwood is a good keeper, but Given is so much better and could be the difference in us gaining an extra 6-9 points over the course of the season.

Still, I don't think we'll get Given in so Westwood it is then

'if the right offer came in', i.e. stupid wages. If a player's only gonna join us for silly wages then they can go elsewhere. Bloody good keeper (for this level), but he doesn't want to play for LCFC so why bother?

at the end of the day theres no question about who i would choose. Given is still a quality player in the premiership so think what he could be like in the championship? fair enough if celtic come calling he will go there i think but to all the people saying they would much rather have schiemical or westwood then you need to have a re-think. yes westwood and schiemical would be cheaper but if you want quality then your going to have to pay the money and that is the situation that we are in here or we could just forget about signing a goalkeeper and stick weale back in net next season :crylaugh:

Because he's a.....

So? I think I made my point. If he's considering coming here to rinse us financially, I'd rather he go elsewhere. Apologies if that wasn't made clear.

Not that many people want to play for Leicester City though, do they really. It's not as if players have grown up thinking one day I'll fulfill my dreams of playing for the mighty Leicester City, we're not Liverpool, United, Barcelona etc. We have to make ourselves an attractive club for people to be willing to join, unless we just sign lower league players. And a way of making ourselves attractive is by offering more than other clubs. If the owners have to money and have no issue with paying it, why do the fans?

No apologies needed, your point about you not wanting him here just to rinse us was clear, I just wished to point out the contradiction in your post about why would we want him here.

I was coming up with something regarding supply and demand to explain this situation but I've had a long night at work and I'm tired so please forgive me, 'cause after staring at the screen with my two 'piss-holes in the snow' excuse for eyes trying to make sense of my anology, I can't be bothered.

This.

Wow we really do have the blind amongst our number if people seriously want Westwood over Given.

This.

with Westwood we get a good, young, fit keeper who doesn't have to relocate and is ambitious. With Given we'll get exactly the opposite, and pay a lot more for it.

Am I the only one who remembers the likes of Dublin, Keown et al coming for a final day day? Given's had plenty of opportunity to come here and he's only coming 'round to the idea (if he is at all) because no-one else will pay OTT wages for a very good but overrated keeper.

I'm not suggesting he'd be a bad signing but Westwood is just as good a recruitment imho.

Anyway, sods law says we'll get neither, but I've made my point.

My thoughts, rightly or wrongly, are that Given at Newcastle and then at Man City was the best goalkeeper in the Prem. He has been replaced in the Man City team, but I do not really know why.

Maybe he still is the best even though Mancini isn't picking him!

We wont sign him simply because the club will not be prepared to meet his wage demands. the only way we would be able to do it would be a seasons long lone in which Man City pay the majority of his salary, I know this saying has been overused on this forum lately but why sacrifice two or three good players at this level who have maybe experience promotion before to have Shay?

Are you really comparing Shay Given to Keown and Dublin?

Firstly Given is still doing the business Internationally. If you cared to watch the Ireland game last night, he saved Irish necks on numerous occasions, and of course has at least 5 years of quality left in him, bar injuries. Dublin lost all his pace, and Keown was a blundering big mouth when they both came to join us. There's no comparison what so ever.

Given is well within his rights to demand decent wages for the quality that he possesses. There's no mercenary element to it.

It would be remarkable for him to make a step down, and would only be on the strength of joining a quality side with prospects to it, with he being a key component of the side. No decisions have been quickly made as we've signed nobody at this stage. If I were in his shoes I'd want decent wages and assurances that the improvements that are expected will happen and are not just big talk. Otherwise, he could easily join a Celtic side, for which he was a fan of when he was young.

We do not really have any pedigree or history as a club, and therefore Sven, or indeed our new Chairman will want to have some serious clout on the market, and proof of course in the pudding.

If we want to bring in players of Given's calibre we need to prove that it's going in a VERY good direction.

I would bite my right arm off to have Given in the side. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't followed Given's career, or is simply poo-pooing this idea due to the cost. Overrated? I suggest you look in to the details of Given's career and then come back and in detail explain how he is overrated. He costs money as the team's he has played with have heavily relied on his brilliant keeping. Man City have been disrespectful, and have put his career on hold on the last 2 years. I wouldn't blame him for wanting to move on and expect 1st team. I just hope that he decides he will get this from us and more.

Maybe if we did bring him in, then the rest of the calibre signings will be more likely to join us.

Shay Given might be 35 but he's one of the best keepers around. If Sven can get him and the wages aren't at the £100K a week mark then he'd be my number one choice. As an earlier post said if he helps us get promotion then its well worth it. I was a fan of Weale but some of the mistake he made last year were woeful and i think one thing everyone is agreed on....we need to tighten up at the back!

Given was is one of the best goalkeepers of the last 10 years in the PL. He wasn't dropped because of form or because he's past it, he was dropped because city have a guy in goal now who will be England's number one for probably 15 years. If we get the chance to get Given we should, but we should not get him at the expense of a few other top quality players! We should make a reasonable offer well within our budget and if he doesn't bite, move on. There are other goalkeepers we can get who can take us up there.

Money talks .... He's in the twilight stage of his career and he'll most likely be looking for his final pay check.

To be fair, his final pay check, if he is looking for one, would be at man city. if he came to leicester, his wages would be reduced and he'd only come here for first team football
