Barclay Promoted

The thing that infuriates people about Barclay is his lack of even handedness and consistency his double talk and underhand tactics that many can vouch for.

He uses tactics that are deliberately exclusive rather than inclusive and intimidating rather than conciliatory. Brute force seems to be the only tool he has and gives the impression he got his training in the 50's60's East End Kray brothers gangster era as a bouncer.

I've never had any direct problems with him but a mate of my sons, who was the smallest and most inaccessible of a group of fans standing on the back row of the Kop celebrating a goal after the music had stopped was unceremoniously and one might say brutally ejected from the ground without warning and banned . Obviously not by Barclay himself but he is ultimately responsible for the actions of his stewards.

Flipping the question around - what's so great about sitting?

Granted I'm a bit of a cynic but it isn't really about matchday safety, it's about control and they can control what the fans present do easier when the fans are sat. I'd imagine that's why standing is fine in L1 and below, because the crowd sizes are smaller and they can control the fans without needing them to sit down.

Nothing. But you see this is the problem. If you were Kevin Barclay, safety officer and you have a guy come up to you saying I've been standing the whole game because it creates a better atmosphere - you can see why you don't have a leg to stand on. You can't give a valid reason. I don't think there is a valid reason for it really but that's my opinion, other people obviously feel differently. You see personally I couldn't care less either way, as a spectator, aslong as nobody impedes my view and I can see the game I've paid to see then I'm happy. The club on the other hand is providing a service and making sure 20-odd thousand people are as safe as possible is no easy task and it's an important job because you don't want to be going to a football game fearing injury for whatever reason. Dealing with would be trouble makes is another thing. There will be families who come to see the games that probably don't want their children hearing excessively bad language or things like racist chants.

its really not rocket science...... have a standing area. set the capacity. dont sell any more tickets.

whats so difficult about that?

It's certainly not rocket science. If by that you are referring to the fact that standing only areas are utterly unsafe, probably more so than standing in seating areas. Because there is less space the potential for crushing and such I'd say is rather high.

There is a family stand.

 - they aren't.

Hillsborough

For somebody who made such grandiose claims about coming on here with an 'educated' view, that's one hell of an uneducated response. Try reading the Taylor Report itself if you're not willing to read the numerous secondary reports that absolve standing in itself, it too will say standing is NOT intrinsically unsafe.

i have to stand up before i go to the loo , i then walk watching the match when going towards the loo , does the discussion on here by tornado fart pants mean i have to crawl on my arse for a pee or if not it means i will be ejected ?

I personally recommend a full health and safety briefing with the block's stewards and all fans within a 10 seat radius before jumping up to celebrate a goal.

1 example out of thousands of standing areas and the tragedy was not even caused by standing.

It may not have been the cause, but from memory what was it - 96 people were crushed in the standing area?

So by your reckoning, because 'only' 96 people have died over the course of the history of the game that makes it alright to continue using areas that are potentially unsafe? Maybe less people have died in recent years because of the safety measures that have been implemented into the modern game...

Ultimately, one death caused by unsafe conditions is one death too many. I don't care who agrees and who doesn't agree with me, the rules are there for the safety of you and your fellow supporters. If you don't like it, then don't go to the game.

Judging by the maturity of that post I'd suggest you just continue to do it in your pants until you're off nappies.

Potentially unsafe - anything is potentially unsafe - my glasses are potentially unsafe because the lense could smash and blind me - should i stop wearing glasses due to that potential danger?

LENS

I'm getting fed up with this already as it's getting like talking to a brick wall. Yes, other things are potentially dangerous as well, but the club isn't responsible for those things. If you poke your eyes out with your glasses then that's your fault. I don't profess to be a Mr. Know it all but I'm guessing the club has a certain level of responsibility in ensuring the safety of it's fans on the premise of the Walkers Stadium.

Maybe rather than moaning at me you should be putting your opinions forward to people that have the power to make changes though I'd wager if you can't convince me that standing isn't unsafe when compared with sitting at a match, then I on't think you will sway Kevin Barclay and co. either!

Tornadoshaun- its a tough un. This bloke is following rules, BUT if every single fan decided to stand then the stewards would have no chance. Sitting down at a football match ruins the whole thing. Leeds away twice last season was ruined. Wembley trips are ruined. I do not want to go to a game to sit down.

If they enforce it in l1 next season i'll hand my ticket back. If you submit to these tossers they will win

Probably because the club decided to put next to the away fans...

but that's a whole different topic that has been discussed many times.

I'd imagine that was done to serve a purpose, i.e. to try and minimize 'bad behaviour' between away fans and would be trouble makers. Obviously if that was the case it didn't work all that well as I mentioned, as there are many loud youths and such like that also sit in the family area due to it's proximity to the away fans.

As I said the clubs fault for putting it next to the away fans...

honestly mate, what do you expect from a youth? (I hate the term youth, because it always has bad connotations these days, we aren't all that bad.)

For them to sit in silence and watch the game with a flask of hot chocolate?

A football ground would hopefully always be loud.

I'm 16, I like to stand, I like to shout. Many people my age like to, we have lots of energy.

Well like I said, on a personal level it doesn't bother me. If I pay money to go and see a game then I'm happy as long as nobody is impedeing my view. I do like to hear a bit of singing and part of the fun of being at a game for me is the atmosphere created by some of the chants etc. But some people don't enjoy those kinds of things, but they have paid the same money as you to get in so they have just as much right to be there as any body else. Personally I think putting the family stand near the away fans was a bit silly, and it's an even more stupid decision to keep it there, but hey-ho. I'd assume as with most things there is a good reason for it that I don't know about. It's a difficult job trying to keep so many people happy at once and people need to appreciate that, I'd argue it's an impossible job. But I guess you have to have a list of priorities, and like it or lump it, top of that list is and IMO rightly is, health and safety which is where this whole standing issue comes in.
