Chris Hughton has been confirmed as Birmingham City manager after completing a deal to fill the vacant post at St Andrew's.

The former Newcastle manager had been out of football since he was sacked by Newcastle in December.

The former Tottenham coach is believed to have been preferred to Roberto di Matteo to succeed previous Blues boss Alex McLeish.

He added: "I am absolutely delighted.

"To be joining a club of the stature of Birmingham, with the history it has, is a pleasure.

"We are going into an extremely competitive Championship and with the players set to return for pre-season training very soon I need to get into the job straight away."

A club statement said: "Following productive talks acting chairman Peter Pannu felt that Hughton was the perfect candidate to take charge.

"Pannu was particularly impressed by Hughton's vision and footballing theories of garnering youth and playing attractive and effective football."

The club have not confirmed the length of Hughton's contract or the make-up of his backroom staff.

Hughton is Yeung's first managerial appointment since taking control of Blues during the early part of the 2009-10 campaign.

McLeish resigned on 12 June before switching across Birmingham to replace Gerard Houllier at Aston Villa.

Hughton has previously been an assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland and Tottenham.

Decent appointment, and seems to be a genuinely nice bloke too. I'd wish him all the best, but I dont want Brum finishing above us

Has he got the squad? He didn't really need to change too much at Newcastle.

I think the Newcastle job was initially harder because he was walking into the job which no other managers really wanted because of the situation with the owner, so Hughton did very well in just taking the job on and eventually winning the league. However, he didn't loose the spine of the squad. A few players left, for example Michael Owen, but players such as Nolan and Smith stayed.

Thats why I think the Birmingham team can draw comparisons to that Newcastle squad. As long as they don't loose key players, such as Roger Johnson and Scott Dann, then I don't see why Birmingham won't be right up at the top of the table. He's got the new signings as well; King and Burke.

Indeed, he doesn't have to change much again, does he? As long as the squad stays together although I have seen reports linking Dann to Liverpool and Johnson to Wolves etc.

I hope he does well there, he shouldn't have been sacked by Newcastle, and as long as we win the league I'm happy for Birmingham to finish 2nd.

Reuters: Birmingham City FC say Hong Kong police questioning owner Carson Yeung in money-laundering case

Birmingham City's Acting Chairman Peter Pannu wishes to put out a statement informing the public that President Carson Yeung is assisting the Police in Hong Kong in relation to certain criminal investigations which at this stage he believes do not have any connection to the operation of the parent company or any of its subsidiaries.

Pannu said: "I have just had a call from the Birmingham International Holdings lawyers informing me of the position in Hong Kong and I have also been informed by them that Carson is assisting with enquiries that have nothing to do with the operation of BIHL in Hong Kong and therefore nothing to do with the operation of the club, and relate to other matters.

"People are reminded that in recent years members of the previous Board were placed on bail for a significant amount of time and nothing came of it. I am only using this as an example to calm any fears.

"The law says a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

"Until I find out more information about this matter there is no further comment to be made."

Quality appointment for them imo.

Even if he did have a distinct advantage at Newcastle, he did well to win the league and until his completely unjustified sacking was doing well in the prem.

They should be right up there this season.

Yeung's been arrested in Hong Kong....

Birmingham owner Carson Yeung has been arrested and charged with five counts of money laundering involving £59 million.

Yeung appeared in court in Hong Kong on Thursday to face five counts of "dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offence".

The charges relate to offences alleged to have occurred between 2001 and 2007, according to prosecutors....

The South China Morning Post reported that Yeung was released on bail of £558,000 until the next hearing, which is scheduled for August 11. He was also ordered to surrender his travel documents and report regularly to police.

Yeung bought a 29.9% stake in City four years ago and took full control of the Carling Cup winners midway through the 2009-2010 season in an £81 million takeover from David Sullivan and David Gold.

Birmingham issued a statement on Wednesday insisting the situation with Yeung was not related to the club's holding company.

Acting chairman Peter Pannu said the inquiries have "nothing to do" with Birmingham International Holdings, whose shares are floated on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Pannu also urged people not to jump to conclusions, adding: "People are reminded that in recent years members of the previous board were placed on bail for a significant amount of time and nothing came of it.

"I am only using this as an example to calm any fears. The law says a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Until I find out more information about this matter there is no further comment to be made."

Shouldn't have thought this will affect the club too much in the meantime, but interesting none the less.

Personally I don''t think hes that good of a manager, but we shall see how well he does with B'Ham.

Really?

He won the league with Newcastle, ok it was a good squad but he still walked into a job that looked unsecure, and then did very well in the Premier League. I mean, some of the results he picked up were great for Newcastle, such as, beating Arsenal away 0-1.
