HankMarvin Posted 30 June 2011 Posted 30 June 2011 Sven Goran Eriksson is offering big fees and paying big wages as Leicester look to spend their way out of the Championship. Eriksson spent nearly £50million on players at Manchester City when in charge of the Premier League outfit from 2007-2008 and brought in Everton striker Yakubu in January in an attempt to gate-crash last season's play-offs. And the former England boss, backed by the Foxes' Thai owner Vichai Raksriaksorn, is again making his presence felt in the transfer market. He has already signed Neil Danns, Kasper Schmeichel and Lee Peltier this summer after Leicester came 10th in the Championship last term. Now Reading defender Matt Mills is expected to reject the chance to move into the top flight with Wolves and accept Leicester's bumper salary offer, which could earn him £30,000-a-week. Eriksson, 63, is also closing in on Preston stopper Sean St. Ledger and ex-Portsmouth striker David Nugent, while Peterborough's prolific Craig Mackail-Smith has also chosen to join the Foxes . The Swede is even believed to be ready to hijack Leeds' move for free agent Jonathan Woodgate in a bid to get Leicester up. It is far cry from October 2002, when Leicester went into administration with debts of £30m after relegation and the collapse of ITV Digital. Keeper Schmeichel, 24, has joined from Leeds for £1.25m and knows Leicester will be among the favourites for promotion. "The pressure is on, of course it is," he said. "I know the ambition of the club and the ambitions are very high. And why not? You have to aim big. "I have seen some of the signings and the players who are already here, we have some great quality." Schmeichel is now playing for Eriksson for the third time in his career after spells together at Man City and Notts County. He added: "It is great to work with Sven and I love working under him. The atmosphere he creates at clubs is very positive. "There is a great energy in the dressing room when he is around. He likes to play a certain type of football and he is just a great guy. "He is a father figure and he believes in the youngsters. He makes the players feel part of everything, but he also makes everyone at the club feel part of it all. "He is always shaking everyone's hand and including everyone. He is very polite, and you don't see that in football every day. "I am looking forward to getting going." In a sign of Leicester's rising profile, they have pre-season friendlies with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Valencia and Turkish side Bursaspor lined up for the coming weeks.

Corky Posted 30 June 2011 Posted 30 June 2011 We've got to spend, no doubt about it. The squad needed a major overhaul and we are signing and targeting the right sort of players.

Joe. Posted 30 June 2011 Posted 30 June 2011 Goalkeepers are shot-stoppers, defenders are always referred to as stoppers.
MPH Posted 30 June 2011 Posted 30 June 2011 Is he really planning on signing SSL Mills AND woodgate? That's a lot of wages for 3 players when ultimately one won't be playing....
LCFC BEAST Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 Woodgate is passed it and will be on a pay as you play basis i imagine and SSL and Mills would be quality signings for us, especially Mills. Long time admirer of him, can see him commanding the back line just like someone needs to
Nick Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 QPR manager Neil Warnock has admitted the club are struggling to sign players for the upcoming Premier League season. "We've targeted a number of players during the last few weeks and although we've missed out on some, the board are continuing to work hard to assist me in bringing new additions to the football club," said Warnock. SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 I remember being this excited when Mandaric took over and then being dissapointed as all he signed was players that were over the hill. Top and co haven't messed about, right from the start they appointed a big name manager. Then proceed to get good players who were on big wages. This season most of the targets have been good targets that are in theire peak or about to hit there peak 22-28 i'm very impressed and going to enjoy the ride even if it is a rollercoaster.
