Bristol City Player Ratings

I think he is a good option off the bench, not a starter though.

Again it shows just how poorly planned our pre season signings have been when in one of the positions Dyer and Schulpp have had to start in what was supposed to be a team challenging for the top two.

It's quite clear what we need is a goalscorer, I don't see why we jump on Schlupps back, the kid is a natural poacher, played upfront with Nugent could be a very effective combination. Yet he was stuck out on the left wing, people said he didn't seem to know what he was meant to be doing, well what do people expect when he's played out of position. I understand we need someone accomplished but for the time being why not give him the chance, we have no other real strike force option. Yet we go with that stupid lone striker system, I know it's called a 4-3-3 but bollocks is it, it's a negative 4-5-1 and its ****ing useless!

why?

I've seen us "smash" corners in and do you know what happened? Every time they went straight out for a throw-in or goal kick.

It is easier to force a touch in though than floated crosses where you need the neck muscles etc to force the ball in.

King - 5 King, King Andy Andy king, he's in the game and then he's gone Andy, Andy King. A magical performance I mean one minuet he was there, and then he vanished :tumbleweed:

lol

And people moan when I say I don't rate him. I remember not rating Weale when Pearson was manager and nobody agreed with me.

St Ledger - Yes his mistake was bad, but at least it was 25-30 yards away from goal and not 18 yards away from goal, seeing the replay Bamba was unlucky not to defend that, and Schmeichel did get a hand to it and in all fairness maybe should of saved it.

Don't blame Schmeichel, it was one on one. Anyone who has played centre back in Sunday league knows that when you are last man you don't turn your back on a nippy striker and dribble the ball back towards your own goal. Doesn't matter if it is 18 or 38 yards from goal.

I truly worry for what may be this season. Lacklustre, no creativity and no fighting spirit. even with someone like Maynard in the team, I dont think we'll be much better as the creativity of our midfield is non existent. Serious work needed.

4 for the entire team.

Schmeichel 5 - doesn't come for crosses, hesitant when long balls are over hit, dropped ball on edge of area which could have easily cost - another to add to Sven's "not-much-better-than-Weale" goalie collection

Peltier 6 - not a Naughton but good enough, solid and reliable with a bit of pace

Bamba 7 - excellent distribution (superb pass put in Gallagher) and defensive anticipation commanding in air and on ground

St Ledger 6 - really doesn't deserve the slagging he's getting - yes his mistake cost us the second goal (at a time when we were finding our feet) but otherwise won the ball consistently and usually used it well

Konchesky 7 - faint praise on here but solid with a bit of flair going forward

DEFENCE AS A UNIT 4 - individually decent performances but we still look vulnerable, St Ledger horribly isolated for second goal

Fernandez 4 - Those at Cov described a midfield enforcer supremo. Nonsense! Absolutely stupid booking, stupid challenge for the penalty (lucky not to see red) and overall just busily ineffectual

Wellens 6 - hugely underrated here, took the game to the opposition though his final pass often let him down. The idea that our problems would be over if we purged him are utterly witless.

King 5 - got two decent positions, fluffed one with poor control, the other well saved, thought his passing to Nugent was good. Just can't see why you wouldn't start with him.

Gallagher 3 - what to say that hasn't been said before? Totally unreliable when the chips are down, his waste of the chance when put in on the left shortly after equaliser was criminal. All he had to do was shoot for the corner or put in Nugent and he put it in the one place which was both off target and beyond Nugent. For a player who's primary asset is skill on the ball it perfectly illustrated his lack of a killer instinct and his pre-occupation with personal cameos. Another time he was on the edge of the six, down the left and a hard cross across the line would almost certainly have been deflected in. What does he do? Showboating style, pulls it back to the pen spot where someone's shot is easily blocked out. A real waster.

Dyer 5 - didn't get in the game much but his running at pace does undoubtedly create space and openings. One overhit cross underlined the problem - his final ball is often woeful.

MIDFIELD AS A UNIT 2 Chaotic. No discernible system, over-crowded, too little threat out wide.

Nugent 7 Worked his socks off on negligible quality service and deserved his goal. Could well get 20 this season if we play to his strengths.

SUBS

Danns 4 Did nothing to justify his transfer

Waghorn 2 Confidence totally shot (unsurprisingly)

COACH

Well he has his own players, he's had his pre-season, so the Svenistas need to start explaining why our world class coach seems so unable to put a convincing Championship side on the pitch. To still have no solid first choice goalie, and to still have no captain who is guaranteed his place, make the excuses for last season's less decent performances look even less credible than they were at the time.

Kasper - 6 - Did nothing wrong , No real chance with the goals

Peltier - 6 - Looks nervous and seems to have no confidence on pushing forward, or am just used to the quality we had in Naughton last season and alot of players wont match up ?

Bamba - 6 - Strong, Played ok, could of done better with 2nd goal

St Ledger - 5 - didnt look confident at all, yes he messed up for the 2nd goal but bamba could of done better afterwards

Konchesky - 6 - pushed forward when he could but no one helped out

Wellens - 6 - ok performance but no one helped out and even shoted at them to say where is the support!

King - 5 - Another invisible game, Offered nothing

Fernandes - 5 - very poor, made some stupid tackles

Dyer - 7 - only one who put the defence under pressure

Gallagher - 3 - Leightweight , poor passing, cant tackle, never ran, just jogged, overall just a piss poor game

Nugent - 9- Ran his socks off but no one helped him. 4-4-2 SVEN! :frusty:

Subs

Waghorn - 4 - Sven played him in the wrong position as always.

danns - 5 - no one helped out

Ref wasn't the best imo. We had two decent throws and yet he decided to give the throw-in to the opposition....

As soon as I saw Nigel Miller was referee, well, thats it. I think he refereed us before and was complete rubbish.

Schmeichel - 6 - Little he could do about either goal, distribution from feet was poor, though. Flapped at one or two crosses, on the whole though, steady.

Peltier - 5 - Solid if unspectacular. Unfair comparisons to Naughton who was a very, very special case for this league. Opted to pump it down the line on more than one occasion, a tactic that didn't work at all.

Bamba - 6.5 - Some classy touches to bring the ball under control, be it via head, foot or chest. Sometimes needs to play simple balls instead of Cruyff-turning his way out of situations. Quite a composed performance, overall, though. Should've bagged at the end.

St. Ledger - 4 - Didn't think he was too bad apart from his mistake, however he did looked laboured at times.

Konchesky - 6 - Like Peltier, kept launching the ball into the channels, a tactic that never worked and just meant the midfield was bypassed. Energy and movement are second to none, gets himself into space going forward very well. Decent service is never forthcoming, though.

Wellens - 3 - Like Saturday, too many touches on the ball, no movement, poor passing. Bar one or two moments, I don't think he bought anything to the table. Time for the bench.

King - 3 - See Wellens. Awful passing, simple balls, basic stuff, not connecting. Would keep him in the team over Wellens purely for his goal threat.

Gallagher - 3 - Hit and miss delivery, lightweight in the tackle, gash ball retention. Was pleased he started but he didn't do an awful lot to justify his place.

Fernandes - 5 - The one midfielder last night that seemed to have a 'pass and move' philosophy. Moved the ball on quickly. Needs to keep his place. Was reckless diving into challenges on a yellow with us chasing the game.

Dyer - 3 - Failed to do much, apart from one or two bursts. Like Gallagher, I was pleased to see his name on the team sheet, but he did little to cement his place.

Nugent - 8 - So pleased he got the goal all his effort the past couple of games has warranted. Real engine on him, kept going until the end. With a semi decent attacking partner, he could net 15-20 a season without doubt. Looks great with the ball at his feet, constant hoofing doesn't help his cause. Had to keep coming into midfield because the service was lacking. Last night's silver lining.

Subs - 4 - Danns looked lively when he came on, Waghorn not so. Needs to come off set-pieces.

Sven - 4 - Awful tactics again but can't be blamed for our midfield not getting footballing basics right, neither can he be blamed for St. Ledger's error. What was glaringly obvious last night was the need for wingers. Proper wingers, none of this makeshift shit. I still can't understand why the loan market, that was used to decent success last term, has't been exploited yet. Vladimir Weiss or someone of that ilk (x2)would be spot on. Nugent NEEDS a partner too. Vassell up top, even Howard, anyone that means he isn't left so isolated.

We need Mr Tunchev back quicker than a pair of thai's can turn a club shop into a duty free outlet.

Gallagher would have been outmuscled in a girls netball game.

Nugent & Wellens 8, the rest not worth the wear and tear on my keyboard...

Am I the only one who thought Bamba had a poor game, it was his poor header that led to to the freekick for their first. He must be a nightmare to play next to, ok he was fairly composed on the ball but he is just a liability. Tunch and Mills will hopefully be the settled pairing when Sven finally comes to his senses. He certainly wouldn't get more than a 5 from me.

St Ledger - 3 A horrific debut. The goal costing mistake aside he was to blame for the penalty and gave the ball away countless times. Absolutely shocking.

Horrific very harsh, and how was he to blame for the penalty when it was Fernandes who supposedly brought Campbell-Ryce down?

He gave the ball away countless times in the 1st half, but 2nd half his passing really improved he was picking out the midfielders with ease and was bringing the ball out of defence well.

Yes his mistake was bad, but at least it was 25-30 yards away from goal and not 18 yards away from goal, seeing the replay Bamba was unlucky not to defend that, and Schmeichel did get a hand to it and in all fairness maybe should of saved it.

St Ledger heading accuracy was top notch, and his passing in the 2nd half was very good far better than Matt Mills.

He had a chance to clear the ball and fluffed it giving to their player clean through on goal. Then Fernandes brought him down trying to recover the situation.
