trebor Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 Anyone out there remember a pub called The Invincible on the Eyres Monsell. I used to drink there in the 70s and 80s. I was at the Reading game last Saturday, and after the game drove up to the estate. The pub is no more. Someone told me it burnt down. Shame, had many a good session in there. It wasnt to far to stagger home as i lived in Allenwood Road. Good old days gone, but never forgotten.
AoWW Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 It most certainly had a reputation! Used to live on Scotswood Crescent so although I didn't go in there too often I regularly drove past it. Not the prettiest of pubs, even back in its day! And, yes, trebor, it had been closed for many years - lots of fuss locally about it being an eyesore - then, not so long ago, there was an arson attack on the place and it's now been demolished.
Rocket-Ron Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 It seems it wasn't so Invincible after all . I hate it when pubs lie to you!!
Zingari Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 RIP Eyres Monsell pub one day Invincible next day Invisible it reminded that I had a drive round my old hounts a while ago and was a bit disappointed that so many from my yoof had gone ,such as the Rocket , the Emmy , Triangles , Robin Hood , Windmill , most of the pubs around Frog Island Northgate etc But that's progress I suppose , mustn't grumble .

Not the prettiest of pubs, even back in its day! Right round the corner from me! I only just found out the other week that the Scarlet Pimp is still open, I thought that had closed down years ago.

On Stephenson's Drive? If so, you're braver than I thought!
Zingari Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 On Stephenson's Drive? If so, you're braver than I thought! I remember standing there watching it being built as a kid , around the same time as the old folks bungalows that surrounded it , it wasn't particularly rough in the 60's or the early 70's , it got worse later I think , long after I'd left .
Mickey O'Neil Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 it reminded that I had a drive round my old hounts a while ago and was a bit disappointed that so many from my yoof had gone ,such as the Rocket , the Emmy , Triangles , Robin Hood , Windmill , most of the pubs around Frog Island Northgate etc But that's progress I suppose , mustn't grumble . I used to drink in the 'Mill! And the Monks Rest (r.i.p !). And the one in Netherhall a couple of times (bloody name escapes me). The Ship or summat?? I know it's not the Ship, but it was something to do with ships, I'm sure! And finally, The Stirrup Cup, although this is still standing, aka The Manor

The Doctor Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 Used to go past that on the way to school sometimes, was run-down even then though.

It was the 'Age! Had a ship on it's pub sign. Wouldn't have slept if I didn't remember the name! The Humberstone is still there isn't it?
Bert Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 Was The Invincible called the scarlet Pimpernel once? Empire, Northbridge Tavern, The Robin Hood, The Bosworth (Bozzy) and the Rocket are all gone.
Ozwin Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 Nah the Pimp is a pub on the other side of the estate.
Finnegan Posted 19 August 2011 Posted 19 August 2011 Knew the Rocket and Emmy would get a mention in here. Don't worry, if you want scary the Neighbours is still going strong.
samuel Posted 19 August 2011 Posted 19 August 2011 Fooking ELL...A blast from the past all of them. I am 38 and have been suitably pissed in all of them at somepoint.... Life is soooo short....15 I started in The Braunstone Pub.....Good Times for sure.... <_<
Zingari Posted 20 August 2011 Posted 20 August 2011 Spending my teen and early 20s years around Fosse Road North it seemed like I was in a pub goers paradise although I didn’t realise it at the time of course . Within a 5/10 minute walk I had , the Rocket , Emmy, Robin Hood ,Blackbird, Friar Tuck, North Bridge tav , Foresters ,Crows Nest , Richmond ( not where it is now), Blue Moon(the best ) , Cricketers Rest , Adventurers , Van Damme ( a couple more near north bridge that I can’t remember the names and the sanvey gate pubs weren’t much further ) the Swan , Tudor , Pool club , Napier and I think I may have forgot a few . no doubt other parts of the city were just as well furnished with watering holes though maybe this thread need to be renamed as old pub nostalgia
AoWW Posted 20 August 2011 Posted 20 August 2011 Speaking of nostalgia, who can remind me the name of the pub near the junction of Glenfield Road and Woodville Road? Also, is the Neighbours in New Parks still open? And the Crow's Nest... still open? I used to work in there! (Briefly!)
