Father Ted Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 ... That we need 2 strikers? Or will he switch to 4-5-1 again like Southampton?
Jace Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I think when nugent is fit he will still want to start beckford, nugent and vassell
Wymsey Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I would prefer Beckford on his own up-front - with Vassell supporting him and midfield helping him out in oppositions' area. But still two strikers are a must and would help Beckford out, to some degree.
Corky Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 He only switched in the second half against Saints, the first we looked fine. He should realise our best displays this season have been with two up top so stick to it.
stuartn27 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 i dont think this so called diamond works... in welleans and king....they are to much the same type of player... not a fan of the diamond...maybe beckford and vassell up front with nugent just dropping off the 2...... lets attack these teams...
acooling08 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I think today we used a flat 4-4-2. It is, has been for some time, and always will be the best formation. If Sven switches to 4-3-3 again he has clearly lost it, because under today's systems we played the League leaders off the park.
nuttytimmy Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Two up top is definitely the way forward and it certainly worked today. To go back to the OP I think that yes, Sven has seen his side put in a great performance against a good Soton team that was badly affected by his switch to a different system and so he tried the same trick against a similarly decent BHA side today. It worked, he stuck with it second half and we got the result and were by far the better side. I just hope he has learnt enough to want to keep this (formation and XI) for Cardiff.
cc_star Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 It certainly worked as did recalling King & Abe at the expense of newer signings I hope Sven uses this as a platform, would love to see Beckford partnering Nugent who's arguably harder grafter than Vassell & always far more likely to score too Whether Sven has learned or not, only time will tell, I fear he'll bring back the formation that's not suited to our players & again will ask too much of Wellens & shoehorn in Danns & Fernandes into the (so far) unworkable system as he seems fascinated or obsessed by it, but you never know he could stick with what worked even if it's not actually what he wants.
Finnegan Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Sven loves his diamond 4 4 2, I'm amazed we stuck with 4 3 3 / 4 5 1 for as long as we have, to be honest. I'd be a little surprised if he doesn't play Beckford and Nugent in this system once they're both fit. Especially given how many central midfielders he's got in the side now.
Alpha Gifts & Awards Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 How about Nug and Beck upfront with Danns wide left, Vassell right, Fernandes, protecting the back four and king in front of him? I'm becoming less of a Wellens fan, who seems very slow to pass, having received the ball when we have a possible break on (lack of range of passing?), plus sometimes he stays still after passing the ball when he should be moving again.

Wellens does have that tendency, he just slows down the game and waits for those killer passes on some occasions, I would prefer Danns to take up his position, but he is still a useful player to have in your armory.
Bagworthblue Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Sven will learn from everything he does, every game played. He, unlike us, is an experienced successful football manager who sees the players every day, knows how sharp they are from one week to the next, has the best opportunity to observe their state of mind and does the most homework on the teams we are due to play. We are all wannabe football managers with none of the above to boast. In previous seasons where a system has worked, we have had good runs before being too consistent and enabling teams to do their homework and put in place measures to stifle us. I am not sure 4-4-2 won yesterday more so players being more comfortable with their roles and the team being more balanced, However, CMS had a good chance early on and that could have changed the game. I believe the 4-4-2 diamond suits us best at the moment and we defended from the front meaning a higher line could be played and the defence came under less pressure. However, my ''wannabe'' opinion is that we need to be able to play a number of formations to keep the opposition guessing and to avoid playing to certain teams strengths. Whatever we play we need to keep the ball better than we have done before yesterday The team is starting to gel and build in confidence - Now - we need to try to build on yesterday , looking at the upcoming features, to stay unbeaten for a few games should be the target rather than expecting to win them all.

Wellens needs competition for a starting spot. This man is rumoured to start against Cardiff in the cup next week:
