Matt Oakley still has a role to play with Leicester City, manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has said.

The 34-year-old joined League One Exeter City on a one-month loan last week and played the entire 90 minutes in their 2-0 victory over Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

Defender Tom Kennedy also joined Peterborough United on loan last week, but did not feature in their 2-1 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers.

Eriksson said both of them were in need of match action and could still pull on City colours again this season.

"I am happy for them," said Eriksson.

"They have not played in the first team since the start of the season so this is important for them. They need to play football. They are still our players so it is important they play.

"Yes, they still feature in the plans. I am sure Matt Oakley would go into the team tomorrow, as a right-back or midfielder, and do a good job. He is one of our fittest players. If you did a running test now he would win it.

"He needs to play football. It Is not good for him to be training every day and not even sitting on the bench. It will be very good for him now."

Oakley has not featured for City in the Championship but has played in two Carling Cup ties, although he has been predominantly used as a right-back.

The former City captain is out of contract at the end of this season.

He has made nearly 150 appearances for the club since arriving from Derby County in January, 2008.

Of course he has, we've already had injuries to 2 midfielders, imagine what it could be like by Feb, our big squad could be the difference needed, especially over the tough winter.

Oakley? We have six ahead of him (King, Danns, Fernandes, Abe, Wellens and Johnson).

Can't see him getting in before those.

Take 3 out suspended/injured

And you still have the likes of Dyer and Gally who could/would be picked ahead of Oakley.

I swear Sven just takes the piss with half his interviews, funny to hear though.

He also captained the team to the League One title, then got us to within one game of the premiership.

I think you'll find he fell out of favour with Pearson and didn't take part in the playoffs.

What about playing in 38 games to help them reach the play-offs??
