Amin Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 http://www.tvforum.co.uk/tvhome/delivering-quality-first-32656/page-4 According to post 38 on this thread, football radio commentaries are now going to be 'neutral'. This means that the local radio in the area of the match will transmit the match for both stations. For example, if we were playing away at Bristol City, BBC Radio Bristol would cover the game for both themselves and BBC Radio Leicester. I don't know how reliable this poster is but I would be pretty dissapointed if it turned out to be true.
Fox92 Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 What? Bad idea I think. That means we won't have Stringer getting excited at every chance?
Jimothy Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Well the commentators are hardly gonna wanna take a pay cut for doing half the matches. So they'll either have to pay them the same for half the work, or they'll all leave. Can't see it working, people won't wanna listen to other teams commentary.
Tielemans63 Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 The Beeb are getting rid of 2000 staff as they have to make huge savings. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if this were true
BoneDog Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Awful idea which hopefully doesn't happen. How come the beeb have to cut costs anyway? Surely more people buy tv licenses nowadays as the population has risen over the years. I thought they'd be raking it in.
Spudulike Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Another cost saving that has been discussed is for local radio stations to share football commentaries. Each station currently sends their own – invariably highly partisan – commentary team to each match." Just home matches soon then Here
Mack Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Surely he is salaried rather than paid per game so apart from a bit of fuel how would this save any money?
nuttytimmy Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 This would be a disaster! One of the greatest things about BBC local radio is it's unrivalled dedication to local football. How will we get our essential regular and timely updates from Hinckley's games if we're listening to a BBC Tyne/Tees feed (for instance)?!
pSinatra Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 I only ever listen to Radio Leicester for their commentary on matches........which must be one of the most popular programmes on the station. I can't think Stringer is on a big wage & Young gets paid in Special Brew. Given his recent commentaries, that's a considerable amount of Special Brew........but surely not enough to break the bank??
accessory Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 The idea of "shared commentary" would work really well whenever we played at Forest or Derby. Think the beeb might have to go back to the drawing board with that..
Webbo Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 It'll never happen. It's probably a scare story to drum up support against the license fee freeze.
davieG Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Have people not heard of redundancies. There's been talk of local radio stations broadcasting the national evening broadcasts to save money. When a match is on Radio 5 live or the TV the commentary is neutral or at least intended to be isn't cant't see the money men worrying about the affect on fans as they've got so much money to cut out of their budget.
Yojoe36 Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Awesome. So instead of laughing at Young and Stringer, I'll be ranting about the biased commentary
THEFATBASTARD Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 When we qualify for europe, how we gonna understand it? or even newcastle? or barry from brum...
Yojoe36 Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 When we qualify for europe, how we gonna understand it? or even newcastle? or barry from brum... Thank God we've already had Cardiff away
reynard Posted 7 October 2011 Posted 7 October 2011 Awful idea which hopefully doesn't happen. How come the beeb have to cut costs anyway? Surely more people buy tv licenses nowadays as the population has risen over the years. I thought they'd be raking it in. I think the license fee has been frozen at the current level for the next 6 years. I was wondering about this yesterday listening to the radio going on about the cuts and the fact that the sports budget was going to be cut by 15% though most of that had been taken up by formula1. Does anyone know if BBC radio Leicester pay a fee to us for radio broadcast rights? If so I wonder whether they will be able to afford to in the future. Personally I can see this kind of shared commentary actually happening. Evening/night time radio is already largely regionalised and it sounds as if more early afternoon programmes will go the same way.
Neil_LCFC Posted 7 October 2011 Posted 7 October 2011 They have already saved a fortune by only showing half of formula one races next season to half costs. Maybe they will just broadcast the first half of matches aswell ! At least we still get Dads Army repeats 52 weeks a year to justify the lisence fee !
Foxblogger Posted 7 October 2011 Posted 7 October 2011 I've been looking at the relevant parts of the report, it encourages local radio to invest in what it does best (local news, sport, breakfast programmes, faith etc.). Sharing programming in the afternoon and evenings is recommended, but nothing about pooling local radio commentaries. I don't think we have much to worry about in this respect. What we should be concerned about is the possibility of clubs deciding they can make more money putting all radio coverage behind a pay wall. At the moment the club benefits from what amounts to fantastic local advertising, which the BBC pay for the privilege of broadcasting. If commentaries were shared one of local radio USPs dissappears, which is why I don't think it will happen.
