Is automatic promotion still possible?

The answer to the question has to be almost certainly not.

In the last 13 seasons 5 of those seasons (all in the last 9 seasons) have seen both sides top of the league at the end of November automatically promoted. In another 6 seasons one of the top two has been automatically promoted.

The seasons of 01/02 and 06/07 give some hope as in those two seasons neither of the top two sides at the end of November were automatically promoted.

The biggest points gap that was made up was 10 points by Sunderland in the 06/07 season.

A 7 point gap was made up by Bradford 98/99 Man city 01/02 and Stoke 07/08. Last season Norwich made up 6 points.

As we are currently 11 points behind 2nd place West Ham it is looking a tough proposition to get one of the two automatic places. A crumb of comfort is that in most seasons sides have played 20 games by the end of November.

Play offs are a good shout though.

4th for me i reckon west ham will win the league, Saints 2nd, Boro 3rd , Us 4th, Cardiff 5th and blackpool 6th :D then us winning the play offs vs Boro

Cardiff or us for second, the season defining game will be West Ham at home with us needing a win to guarantee 2nd spot
