Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 While it's probably of more relevance and/or of more interest to the board (revenue) re the luck we've had with being drawn to play at home on Boxing Day over the past decade, even so it's lucky for the majority of city fans that we don't have to travel very far on this day each year. although I suppose it means more parting with our money! While some on here often moan about the lack of atmosphere at matches these days - with Boxing Day's stifled atmosphere always being a case in point (I suppose it isn't Filbert Street in the 70s and 80s anymore though!), I still think we've been very lucky to have been drawn for playing at home on this day so often over the last ten years, barring just one away fixture in this time (away to Hull on Boxing Day 2006 during Rob Kelly's tenure, which we won 1-2 this time!). Before that you have to go back to our Thierry Henry-inspired 6-1 stuffing away at Highbury on Boxing Day 2000 for the last away fixture for City on 26th December. Lo and behold it's yet another home fixture this coming Boxing Day versus there for the taking Ipswich! Only three points will do for that one. When we're at home on this day then the crowds are always big and it makes us look good because of it.....plus the place tends to get going if it's a good game into the bargain, despite the traditionally dosile crowd at the start who presumably are in post Christmas Day mode!
Jagdinho Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Didn't we play Leeds away in League one on boxing day?
Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Author Posted 7 December 2011 Didn't we play Leeds away in League one on boxing day? Yep, my mistake mate, you're right - a 1-1 draw away on Boxing Day 2008 - 2 out of ten times then we've been away on BD. I suppose I'm trying my utmost to forget we were ever in league One, ! I had it in mind that we beat the mighty Hereford at home that day but that was the following game on from Leeds now you come to mention that year!

We also played Ipswich away in the 2001?2002 season. lost 2-0 i believe
Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Author Posted 7 December 2011 1-1 was it not? Yes, Oakley was our scorer. Wonder if he's still on loan at Exeter??
marko Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Whenever I think about Boxing Day fixtures, my abiding memory is the 1-0 loss to Rotherham when they were bottom of the table.
Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Author Posted 7 December 2011 We also played Ipswich away in the 2001?2002 season. lost 2-0 i believe Hmmm, I'm beginning to look a bit foolish now if you're right! I think that was also the season in the Prem. that we went down under Dave Bassett/Micky Adams duo, soon after Taylor's sacking early doors. Again, I had it in mind that it was Arsenal at home on Boxing Day 2001 (that game that was postponed against them) but that could well have been the New Years Day fixture that season (2001-02). Even so, after those two timely corrections, we've still fallen on our feet these last ten years re Boxing Day being mostly at home and after this year's we'll have played Ipswich four times out of the last 11 on Boxing Day now! I fancy us to win the battle and square it at 2-2 in wins ratio this time. At least Darren Ambrose isn't there to get two consecutive injury time goals on Boxing Days that were a year apart at the Walkers this year! (2002- Ipswich's late winner there and 2003 - Newcastle's 90th min.equaliser). Anyone remember that phenomenon?! I should get out more!

Yep....and bottom-of-the-table Millwall at home the following season, 1-1 - ode to joy, the Levein years!! - only worsened by the merry-go-round Allen/Megson/Holloway season which resulted in the unthinkable! At least we had lower-mid table respectability (ha ha!) under Levein and that 3-2 FA cup win over Spurs!
Bert Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 I'd hardly call it luck. The club request the fixture as their #1 priority fixture each season.
Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Author Posted 7 December 2011 I'd hardly call it luck. The club request the fixture as their #1 priority fixture each season. Really?? Is that allowed? I thought it was just the luck of the draw each year re how the fixtures fall.....
Fox92 Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Anyone remember loosing to Rotherham on boxing day? 2004 was it? 0-1. What a bad performance that was. That boxing day fixture stick out in my mind over the years, I can also remember the Newcastle game in 2003/04 when Darren Ambrose scored in the last minute and Robert knocked Bernard out with his free kick lol We do seem to get Ipswich a lot on boxing day though, and last year we had Leeds which was the same fixture in League 1.

Don't know which game you went to but we beat them 2-1. My bad - was thinking promotion season. Can't even remember that one!

We really didn't, he's correct on both counts - 0-1 Rotherham and 1-1 Newcastle. you edited while I was replying. Perhaps you were thinking of when we beat Sheffield United 2-1
NewquayFox Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Boxing day down here is the annual Newquay V Godolphin (local pub run team) in the South Western (West) league, same as Leicester Senior league. Usualy a fiesty affair and this fixture still holds the record attendance for the S/W league with over 750 turning up for a league game... ;0)

Perhaps you were thinking of when we beat Sheffield United 2-1 I knew he was right on the Newcastle one. Genuinely can only remember play them once and winning 2-1. Obviously not!
Guy Posted 7 December 2011 Author Posted 7 December 2011 I knew he was right on the Newcastle one. Genuinely can only remember play them once and winning 2-1. Obviously not! Such was the forgettable nature of that ignominious home defeat by bottom markers Rotherham in 04 that it's understandable that it draws a blank with some of you! I think they finished bottom by a country mile that season too....

Was there for that hung over as fook, a bloke who i was staying with gave his next door neighboor a massive roast pork in exchange for his 2 season tickets so my uncle and i could go. Was so close to seeing my first ever win then we conceed in the final minutes, i was gutted. At the time it was out record attendance by memory.

My dad went into the back of a car at the Alan Mosss/Epinal Way roundabout in L'boro on the way home that day, very poor day.
davieG Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 My long term impression of Boxing day games is they're usually shit and we lose.
Corky Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Not for me davie, last two I've been to we've won (Ipswich in 2007 and Sheffield United in 2009).
BoneDog Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Didn't we play Leeds away in League one on boxing day? Yes, I was there and remember they had had 5 defeats on the trot before that game. I was just about to start a chant to the below tune - "6 de-feats on the trot...6 de-feats on the trot" when they equalised. Was fumin!
