It could be 2 years before a trial starts so if he doesn't bet bail he'll served 2 years innocent or guilty.

I'd better be careful who I sell my old engineer bits to on Ebay :o:P

It would be interesting to know more about the circumstances because he comes off as either extremely naive, unbelievably incompetent or guilty.

If you're in the import/export business surely you do background checks into what you're exporting (and their possible uses?) and the necessary government clearances required, thats even before considering its going to Tehran, let alone from the U.S.!!!

What are the U.S.'s motives for trumping up the charges? and going to the effort of the sting operation? Genuine question.

You can't complain about Americans selling their weapons to certain unsavoury govts and then cry foul when they try to stop private individuals from doing the same.

Wuh...

Buh..

.... I'm at a loss. You know how retarded that sounds, right?

I don't remember the yanks kicking up too much of fuss when funds were being openly raised in the US to supply arms to proscribed terrorist groups in Northern Ireland.

Quite and this man is a US Congressman.

If we ignore, to save from be side tracked, the comparison between democratic America and Iran, a regime that fixed it's election, violently oppresses it's people and supports the brutality in Syria.

You mean something like this.

Two US Senators Call For Arming Syrian Opposition Filled With al Qaeda Terrorists

So what's your point? Is it right to sell/distribute arms or not?

If US Senators want to consort with terrorists then it cannot be wrong to consort with terrorists and so should not restricted by law.. If the US Government wants to supply arms to thugs (have a look at what is happening in Libya since it was "liberated") then it too cannot be wrong and should not be restricted by law.

Right, so you think everyone should have unrestricted access to any arms they can afford. Hmm, it's a point of view I suppose.

There is no hypocrisy in that point of view. :innocent:

Tappin would be a great name for a striker

I think he's implying that if this man is worthy if imprisonment then serious questions need to be asked of the like of Charlie Wilson and co, not that what this bloke has done is fine because they did it to.

Sort of a fair point, don't you think?

This is what happens when Western governments arm "freedom fighters".:glare:

I'm interested to know when the USA is going to apply for the whole of France to be extradited pending prosecution for selling and supplying nuclear technology.

...And the British government for sanctioning arms sales to almost every despot and nutcase who ever lived.

...And, as Chomsky stated, "If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged."

Judge Robert Castaneda ruled Tappin must remain in custody after US prosecutors told the federal court in El Paso, Texas, he may be a “danger to the community” if released.

He agreed that measures could be imposed to ensure Tappin is monitored if released, but said a discrepancy in Tappin's financial statement led to him being denied bail.

How the fvck is he a danger to the community, is he going to sell them batteries for their tasers?

Oh hang on there is a discrepancy in his financial statement, maybe he is worried he will under pay for his meal. What utter tosh, this is a disgrace and smacks of America trying to flex its muscles.

If Iran is as technically advanced and as much of a threat as the US would have us

believe , why would they need to import any of the manufactured components required ?

They can make missiles, but batteries are beyond them.

It does strike me as odd, they are buying specific batteries for a specific missile launching piece of kit, should they not be more concerned with how they got the missile launching kit.

The whole thing is very very odd, Tappin thought he was selling to dutch car dealers, so if these batteries are able to be used in cars then they are hardly top secret technology, I am sure I missing something but everything I read about this case just leaves me baffled.

Yes it reminds me of when the Iraqis were supposed to be developing the “Iraqi Super Gun “(do you remember this? It was in the late 80s)and called Project Babylon, I think

They arrested an Irishman who was exporting huge leather consignments to them because they claimed he was helping them develop the super holster.

edit;

this was the joke going around at the time :D
