Best player ever?

Until Messi can do it on the international stage as well, he won't be the best player ever.

The only player to have done it all is Maradona.

And as for the argument that the Brazilian league was stronger back when Pele played...maybe so, but Europe was still FAR superior.

Maradona,

Best,

Pele,

Messi (for now)

Henry (best to grace the Prem)

I have to say I think Cristiano Ronaldo between 2007 and 2009 was a few notches better than anything Henry offered in his pomp.

Messi's the best I've seen in my lifetime.

Great shout - as much as he's a tosser, Cristiano Ronaldo is a fabulous footballer. Possible in the top 10 of all time?

I agree that its difficult to compare players. George best for example...just look at the terrible pitches they played on in the 60's it must have required an amazing skill level to perform under those conditions, add to the fact that players werent protected like they are today and he would constantly get kicked and no free kicks awarded - put messi under those conditions and it would be interesting to see how he would cope.

Somebody made a good point on the Guardian blog earlier.

Sure, transport Messi into the 1960s and he wouldn't look as good. But transport George Best into 2012 and he'd have a serious problem. No longer are defenders big fat cloggers. At the top level they are all supremely fit natural footballers. No chance that Best could have a swift half before kick-off and succeed in today's game.

It's a futile exercise.

In all fairness, if you watch a number of games involving Messi, he does get kicked to shreds on a regular basis by defenders who can't get near him.

Until Messi has a major World Cup then for me he cant be compared with those who have done it on the biggest stage of all.

Maradona, Pele and Best for me. The way the ball stuck to their feet on terrible pitches, bobbly pitches when the ball usually runs away from you nowadays but for them they made it look easy, therefore I think the players back then were better than the players we have now or have had in the last 10 years.

Messi is a phenom, Zidane, Van Basten, Ronaldo are also greats, but I believe they are not as good as Maradona, Pele, Best etc...because of the skill they had one terrible pitches, the pitches nowadays are amazing, and easier to play on.

But after him, it's hard to top Messi. I don't think we have ever seen a player do the things he does, his control over the ball is sometimes unbelievable. Maradona has to be second, before my time yes but having watched many clips of him, he's a mile ahead of most. He almost won the world cup on his own and worked similar miracles with Napoli, and that was back in the day of shitty pitches. And he only seemed to need his left foot. Then there's a big gap to Zidane, mesmerised by him when I was young.

I've never seen much to suggest Pele was that good. He couldn't dribble it like Maradona or Messi, or in fact like a lot of other great players. He couldn't pass it with effortless quality like Zidane either. Alot of his famous moments are of him being shit as well. Missing that open goal against Uruguay. Narrowly missing from the halfway line against Czechoslovakia (wtf? loads of players have actually scored from the halfway line). He was a phenominal goalscorer, but as an all round player, I've never seen much evidence that he's right up there with the best, though brilliant for his I'm sure. I think the world just loves the Brazilians and they need some kind of God for the greatest football country.

Obviously not the best ever, but in the terms of goal scoring Eusabio is up there surely? I think he scored something like 310 goals in 320 appearances for Benfica. That is prolific to say the least.

Even better than that, 437 apps 473 goals :jawdrop:
