Phone Problem- Help needed

I've got a HTC Desire HD phone. Every month after about 4 days I go over my internet limit of 500mb. I use Facebook, Twitter and this site, and thats about it. I don't download apps nor watch youtube/redtube videos without a wifi connection.

As an example, since 12th March upto an hour ago, I've used 1.5gbs on my internet allowance (they've been adding me more as I need as there is something clearly wrong)

(to put this in perspective, O2 have told me that only 3% of their customers go over 500mbs per month)

The Geek Squad advised me to do a factory reset which I did about a couple of months ago (in case any app is faulty and has been constantly connecting) The bloke from 02 advised me to turn off my 'background data' and 'synch account' All to no avail.

The Carphone Warehouse haven't a clue, neither have the Geek Squad, 02, nor HTC!

The only thing I now have to go on is the bloke I've just spoken to from O2 has identified that each night, around or just after midnight, my phone connects and uses a minimum of 78mb to a max of about 120mb. Has anyone any idea what thats about? Carphone Warehoue don't want to know.

The phone is about 8 months old and has always been like this in terms of running out of 500mb in about 4 days

These apps do use a lot of data.

You need to make sure that, when you can, you switch the wireless on so that is uses this instead of the network.

I almost only use the apps when I'm on wireless and yet I still use up all my data (and more) with all the automatic updates the phone likes to do.

Well I've been assured by several people from O2 that there is no way that Facebook and Twitter apps should make the phone go over 500mbs?

Ive stopped the 'background data' which I believe blocks any app automtaically updating...

That worked for me when I had a similar problem with my Samsung. Also if you have GPS always on and any apps are using that, I think that can incur data usage.

Have you got any games/apps (excluding twitter and FB) that require an internet connection?

One called livescore, that I use whilst at the city games to keep me up to date with other results. Though my mate uses this app with an iphone and has no problem. Apart from that, no. I even have to refresh my inbox of googlemail as i turned off those automatic updates too

Again, I think all GPS things are off

If you are viewing webpages that don't have a mobile version then it can be easy to exceed your limits. You might want to consider what webpages you are viewing, and whether you regularly view youtube clips/video clips or even large photos. If you stream anything, radio/music, you can again put a serious dent in your usage.

It might all be common sense, but just listing things you might not have thought of. I can be corrected on all the above, but I have a 500mb limit, and I try to be careful what I view. Porn is for laptop ONLY.

I've been assured that facebook and Twitter only use minimal mbs. I don't use the phone for any videos or alike. The only other site i use is foxestalk!

Either way, surely it should last longer than four days!

cant you get an app to see whats using what..

Possibly. There is something similar in task manager I think. I'll have to look into it. Just means waiting up til midnight tonight to see whether it does anything like the o2 chap said. The obvious answer would be to turn the phone off overnight though then my alarm doesnt go off in the morning! lol

The alarm still works in aircraft mode. ;)

buy a cheap radio/clock alarm then switch the phone off when you don't need it. Or you could use the phone just for making phone calls.

My phone has slso been using a hell of a lot of data in the past month or so. I have an app called 3g Watchdog which tracks your data usage(you can set a limit & it will tell you if you are getting close & can shut your internet off automatically at your request if you reach your limit.

I have a Samsung galaxy s2 and if i am not at home & am not actually using the internet i deactivate the data network completely. you can still obviously call & text but your data usage will go up 0% whilst this is deactivated. I do this by holding the power button on the side in and a menu comes up with silent mode, flight mode & power down. Obviously your phone will be different but it may be in the same menu as those other options.

What pissed me off is that none of this should be necessary. I want to be able to pick my phone up when I choose and get easy access online. Not all of it unnecessarily. Fortunately o2 don't charge for going over. The net just becomes very slow. I'd be bankrupt if they did charge

Had my phone replaced by the Carphone Warehouse on Tuesday. Still ****ed.used 75 mb in one minute, accessing one internet browser window. Carphone Warehouse don't want to know. I want rid of the phone, not have it replaced or repaired again
