Keepers make the best skippers

Leicester City's Kasper Schmeichel believes goalkeepers make the best captains.

The City No.1 was given the captain's armband for the midweek draw against Nottingham Forest and could lead the side again this afternoon at Peterborough if Richie Wellens fails to make the starting line-up after a groin injury.

Schmeichel, whose father Peter captained Denmark and Manchester United to European Championship and Champions League success, believes it is natural for keepers to be skippers because of their outgoing personalities and their ability to see the bigger picture on the pitch.

"I have always been of the opinion that goalkeepers make the best captains because they have a different view of the game," said Schmeichel.

"They are not in the thick of the action and have a different perspective on the game.

"Just look at who lifted the World Cup (2010) and the European Championship trophy (2008) – Iker Casillas.

"Oliver Khan, Gianluigi Buffon, Santiago Cañizares were all captains, and for a goalkeeper naturally they are very outgoing and vocal, and I think it is natural for goalkeepers to be captains.

"Denmark have qualified for the Euros and their number one is Thomas Sorensen, who is also the captain."

City head to London Road on the back of some decent home results which have seen them move to within four points of the play-offs, but away they have lost their last four games in all competitions, conceding 14 goals in the process.

However, Schmeichel said he has confidence in the City defence to repel the Posh attack.

"I am very confident in the people in front of me," he said.

"I train with them every day and I know how capable they are, so I have full confidence in them.

"It is one of those things, sometimes you have to hold your hands up and look at each other and say you have to switch on more.

"We conceded some poor goals at Blackpool but we have bounced back since then.

"It is going to go to the last game and we are going to keep on going."

Good to see him pitching for the role. I don't agree with his reasoning though. If being a captain is being the onfield manager, why is it beneficial for the captain to be just as removed from the play as the manager himself? If a keeper can do a good job of captaincy from the goal area then the manager can do just as good a job from the touchline. It's better for a captain to be in the thick of the action, leading by example. Of course if like us you have no worthy outfield players then there is nothing especially wrong with giving it to kasper.

Not at all sure about this. The only players on the pitch that they are regularly in contact with is the defenders. I appreciate there have been some great goalkeeping captains (he fails to mention Dino Zoff, who must surely be the ultimate example) but the static nature of the position means that he has a poor idea of what is actually going on up front and difficulty in motivating/communicating with strikers.

That's a good point about the keeper being more removed from the thick of the action than any outfield player. Then again, they do have more time than any outfield player to observe the action, whereas the outfield players will have to focus on doing their own job more. I'd say ideally, the captain would be a centre half. Second best would be central midfielder, then keeper.

Another good reason why Kasper should be captain is because he is the only player we have who should have a guaranteed first team place right now. Danns and Wellens we will see rotated with Drinkwater and King meaning if a centre mid is captain we could be changing the captaincy each match. We need consistency

Not for me Im afraid. Nothing about Kasper.. He seems to have a gob on him, which is needed. But I always consider a central midfielder as the ideal position for skipper.. Can watch and give the whole team a bollocking when needed.

This type of player (a Shaun Derry type figure) is what I called for at the start of the season.. And I still feel has been sorely missing this season.
