Daggers Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 That's your probablem a line will keep you awake all night. Make sure you don't have to much or any caffennie during the day, that's half the issue. I guarantee you that these days I never touch caffennie at all.

21st Century Fox Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 If only I could harness the time I don't spend asleep doing something constructive.

chuck'em Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 I currently work nights and I'm really struggling with sleep at the moment. I've never had problems before, but now I struggle to stay asleep, even though the house is quiet. I'll get about 3-4 hours before waking and then not be able to get back to sleep. I actually fell asleep standing up last week and woke up when my knees gave way. Only just managed to stop myself hitting the floor.

Captain... Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 I really struggle to sleep when i need to be up in the morning, when i have nothing to do the next day i have no problem sleeping. I'm exactly the same. I'm sure I do it subconsciously to self-sabotage myself, it's really annoying. I'm going to do it tomorrow, when I need to get up early to get to London for the Millwall game, I know it. I usually end up having to drink a load of energy drinks the next morning. It's pretty bad if you've got to get up and pick someone up from the airport. That's normally because you are anxious about what you are going to do the next day, then it starts to get late and you stress you are not going to get enough sleep, then you worry that you are going to miss your train, and your head starts spinning and you can't relax. This well almost definitely happen to me on Sunday night as I normally sleep badly on Sundays away and I am starting a new job and have to get the train at 6:04am, not going to be pretty.
OzFox Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 I saw a sleep specialist a few years ago. The standard advice they dish out is: reduce stimulants like tea coffee, chocolate, coke etc reduce alcohol keep your bedroom dark avoid large meals before bedtime, especially protein go to bed and get out of bed at a regular fixed time each day exercise at least 4 hours before bedtime get plenty of sunlight when you wake (good luck with this one) I was told one of the worst things you can do is stare at a bright computer screen late at night, as it delays the body from producing melatonin and stuffs up your sleep/wake cycle. In other words, this forum can actually be bad for you. 9.41pm here...almost time for me to sign off
Houdini Logic Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 I cut caffeine out of my life completely several years ago and I genuinely have difficulties staying awake - takes me a couple of minutes to get to sleep every night. Got to be worth a shot?

Had two pints at lunchtime (more tonight) I have a skylight in my bedroom, sometimes it's light sometimes dark but cant attach the blind to anything it is worn out. I sometimes leave it late bfore I eat or have a lot of snacks, biscuits, sarnies etc. I vary times going bed getting up depending on how I feel. I'm a lazy sod so only exercise is if I go out shopping or to pub. I can do the waking up to sunlight bit. I get up when the room seems light enough to go for a piss or no.2.

Those guidelines are actually quite hard to follow. I've found it hard to give up coffee, I love late night snacks, my job involves staring at screens sometimes into the early hours and my bedroom catches a lot of light. The wife and I both wear padded eye masks, and for a while I was using a sleep apnea breathing device. All goggles and tubes. Looked like Darth Vader. I'm convinced the worst thing for sleep is computers and TV. I was half thinking of starting a topic on here asking how many hours a day people spend staring at screens. A bad day for me would be up to 16 hours. That's mostly work but then I'd spend a couple of hours "winding down" surfing the web. I thought I was unusual but judging by the amount of time some people spend on here I'm not so sure
Rincewind Posted 14 April 2012 Posted 14 April 2012 I must spend quite a bit at the PC. May have been worse when I was working and the job was not computer related. It was 12 hour shifts sitting in an empty room and going for a 10-15 min walk every hour. Now I check email when I get up and most days I go out lunch time until late afternoon then back on PC until late. So I would say10-12 hours a day. This weekend may be more as I have done enough shopping to last me until Monday so no need to go out. If I did I would be doing one of the other things I shouldn't. Drinking beer. At work I used to play browser games like Travian and Tribal Wars.. Around 9 hours there then come home for 4am and spend another hour on it, get up 11-midday and another 2-3 hours and days off about the same because the games were that addictive and they could not be left too long in case your army was wiped out. Gave them up now.
Teece Posted 14 April 2012 Posted 14 April 2012 Cant remember the last time I slept through the night, and doubt that will be changing anytime soon! I actually seem to fall asleep better on the settee, and if I do then sometimes i'll just stay there rather than get up and go up to bed which then makes me wide awake again

But then she kicked me out of the whole house which screwed my sleep patterns up a little!
OzFox Posted 17 April 2012 Posted 17 April 2012 I blame wifi!!! If that's the case I'll never sleep. I can pick up 14 separate wifi routers from surrounding houses. Most of them seem to be turned on all night. I notice some scientists say not to use wifi in the home or in schools. Meanwhile signals get stronger, and profits go up for telecommunications companies. Funny that.
