MattGamble92 Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Who'd have thought it all that way back in 2004. 8 years down the line we'd have been through all this. Last night made it all hit home. Okay we were never going to make the play-offs after the Millwall game, some might say they knew that after the home fixture. But the gutless, spineless way in which we went about last night just summed this season up perfectly. As least season drew to a close, we all looked to this season will the most optimism since that 2004/2005 season. We were, like then frontrunners with the bookies to clinch promotion. And like then, failed. So for me, while all the inquests will go on as to why we never ahcieved promotion this year. Whether it was the players brought in by Sven, whether it was the change of manager. Whether the wrong man replaced Sven. There is one thing i will certainly not be doing in the summer, looking to next season with rediculous, blind optimism. I have done it for 8 years. I have looked at our club, our infustructure and believed we will get promotion to the Premier League. I have believed that Elvis Hammond would prove everyone wrong and become the prolific goalscoring machine he is, i have believed Sergio Hellings was the dutch Muzzy Izzet, i even believed Kevin Pressman was just big boned. And in all of those years, only once was we even remotely close to getting back to "where we belong". I think it's time to accept you can have one of the top 20 followings in England, you can have one of the top 20 richest owners in England, but that will never necessarily mean you are a top 20 club in England. It all hit home last night. I feel sick. But i know i'll be back in the summer queing for a meaningless high profile friendly, while spending hundreds on a season ticket with a deluded view we will walk the league. But i suppose that's what supporting this club is all about in the end.

Never going to finish in the top half, flirt with relegation and just about survive. Now that was dire. Painful watching, frustrating and perhaps the worst football many of us will ever see. Now, we're all pissed off about not going up. Sure it's annoying. The money we've spent makes it worse. But what I'll say is I'd much rather be where we are now then where we were back then. Not only are we much more stable, but we're financially sound too. Rome wasn't built in a day. Our time will come - patience is a virtue.

Fox 4 Life Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 It is depressingly similar to being an England fan, all the massive hype that comes with every major tournament. I always buy in and think maybe this time we will do it because “on paper”..... sound familiar! Euro 2012 is the first tourney in a while that I have no expectation whatsoever, cue a finals appearance... or not. I do agree with Bert though, if you go back a couple of seasons we would have never been thinking about the prem, I think the expectation raised was too much and the inevitable failure feels worse. Look at Chelsea and Man City (no I am not saying we are on their level) but it took them both a couple of years to become genuine contenders and even now they are still lagging behind United and the empire that was built over multiple years

Guest Bilo Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 It's been such a very long time since we were in the Premier League and boy, have we seen some dross since. That 2004-2005 season where the world and his wife tipped us to walk the league and we finished nowhere, three seasons of some of the most depressingly average stuff ever witnessed by Leicester fans before we sunk to depths no Leicester fan had ever seen us sink to before that day at Stoke. Yet since then I firmly believe we've been on an upward trajectory. Immediate promotion from League One, a kick of a football away from Wembley and being at the stage where we're all incredibly disappointed with a position for which we'd have sold our bollocks four years ago. It may be the longest time we've been out of the elite of English football for decades, but how sweet will it be when we finally return. Because return we will.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 18 April 2012 Posted 18 April 2012 Feel like I was brainwashed a few years ago when I used to see us as play-off contenders year on year despite only adding Andy Johnson, Darren Kenton etc to a squad already consisting of the likes of Geoff Horsefield. At the time, a season of avoiding relegation never seemed the realistic target even though we had a couple of brushes with it before the inevitable happened under Holloway. The optimist would look back and say that even though this season has been bad, it's nowhere near as bad as back in those days!

We're a group of bored owners away from being well and truly up the creek. I'd say our financial position is precarious rather than sound.

Lets hope the people also remember the primary reason for us being in this position of actually looking to be promoted again rather than relegated is the man in charge at the helm now before jumping to ridiculous conclusions about dismissing him. Only thing wrong in your post is we are miles away from being financially sound. In fact our financial position is rather precarious.

Are you reading this Foxhaterams and Lobsterboy or whatever your names are, a balanced and well thought out post, neither overly negative nor blindly optimistic, just balanced - the way it should be. I can be as optimistic as the next person, but I balance that with realism, not blind faith. I'll be optimistic next season as I was this season. But having watched Leicester for the better part of 20 years I've grown to realise that being optimistic changes sweet fa. Leicester will always be Leicester, that monster of a roller coaster. It will throw you about, lift you up, push your adrenaline to heights you never knew possible but then shatter illusions and dreams and make you feel sick. One thing is for certain, I'll never stop supporting my team. Yes I'll get pissed off with it, the players, the manager, the owners, but I'm buggered if I'm throwing 20 years of emotion down the drain. See you next season. Cracking post Mr Gamble +1 from me.

We are now in our longest spell outside the top flight since the second world war, including a season in the third tier. So I'd say so, yes. Probably the worst decade if we go back a little longer and include administration.

Yes it's better than 04-08 but it could hardly get much worse, we couldn't be like that forever because we're not Barnsley. As Bilo says, we'll be back up there eventually. But I hope it's bloody soon, I don't know how many more seasons like 7 of the last 8 I can take.
