davieG Posted 21 October 2015 Author Posted 21 October 2015 It seems a bit odd that one of the major reasons for this is the uncertainty of having to deal with the Middle East and Russia yet we're going to rely on China for this.
Merging Cultures Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 It seems a bit odd that one of the major reasons for this is the uncertainty of having to deal with the Middle East and Russia yet we're going to rely on China for this. I guess there is still significant growth expected in China, and once it is built, I guess we are just repaying them rather than relying on them for ongoing support as it is being built with the French.
MooseBreath Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 The financing seems quite politically motivated with the government not wanting to be seen to be borrowing and increasing the deficit. One good thing is that the Chinese and French will have to assume the risk of any cost overruns during construction which I would guess are quite likely. I can understand using the French company to build it as there are no British companies with the level of recent expertise nor the ability to take on so much financial risk, but hopefully there is some commitment to using British workers wherever possible. All in all it seems like a reasonable deal
Guest MattP Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 What a bizarre situation when we subsidise the French economy through the rebalancing of the EU finance budget and whilst we do that they invest billions into a nuclear power station here.
Merging Cultures Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 I can't find a straight answer online. It seems the Chinese will own 30% of the GBP24.6bn nuclear power station, will the French own the rest?
Rincewind Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 I don't really know. The general rule for thse deciding is that it is fine if it is NIMBY.

Rincewind Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 Nuclear power stations don't go in anyone's back yards ken mate. They're a bit too big. Yes of course. Yours and mine might not be big enough but I bet you know some that will be.
MooseBreath Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 Yes of course. Yours and mine might not be big enough but I bet you know some that will be. Sure. Brilliant stuff ken mate.
Guest MattP Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 Everyone who votes Tory has a nuclear powered station sized garden.

MooseBreath Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 A woman did sell them the 230 acres that they are using... Probably forced out of her home, poor lady. Unless she's a tory then she's made a packet out of the sale. Hope we get to find out. This seems like the most important issue at play here. DNO.

Rincewind Posted 21 October 2015 Posted 21 October 2015 Obviously in your backyard would not mean you have to have 250 acres spare. It is more in your area. Would you want one in a nearby park? It is like fracking. People agree with it but don't want it near them. I could be wrong and you would be happy to have plant 3 doors away.

With fracking you have to go where the gas is. With nuclear you just have to be by the sea. In any case, the location has already been decided many years ago.
Guest MattP Posted 22 October 2015 Posted 22 October 2015 Bad news is Ken they are building it in your back garden.
