England first 11 to face the Ukraine on Tuesday the 19th?

I think Milner will start. We only need a draw and Walcott is probably better as an impact sub.

As much as I think he's a shit cvnt, what did Carroll do v Sweden to deserve to be dropped?

As harsh as it is, and as much as I like Carroll, Rooney is our best player, he's not going to be on the bench. Someone's got to miss out, Welbeck and Carroll both played well and both scored. Welbeck and Rooney play together with United and Welbeck is more mobile and will play the "lone" (he'll have support from both wings and Rooney) striker role better. He's also a better option if we're going to carry on trying to catch teams on the break with pace.

Thing is, Rooney's not really done anything for England since Euro 2004. The best player idea is based pretty much entirely on his Manure performances, there's no reason why he should just walk straight back into the England side, particularly when Carroll and Welbeck did well v Sweden.

Sorry, disagree.

Let's not forget Rooney has scored at a rate of 1 in 3 for England over a long international career. Sure, he's not been as good for England as for Manchester United, but he's England's one potentially world-class attacking option.

Furthermore, he'd be able to close the gaping hole between our midfield and forward line, retain possession (Algeria-style first touch not withstanding) and add a creative spark.

Carroll doesn't deserve to be dropped, but then again, he probably doesn't deserve to be paid £80k a week at Liverpool. You don't always get what you deserve.

Would pick the same team, but with Rooney in for Carroll.

Young didn't do anything of note against Sweden. Even though he was quiet in the second half vs France, let's give the Ox another go. Both goals we've scored from crosses (not Welbeck's mind) from the right were from StevieG, and Milner hasn't shown much when going forward, Walcott might not be the same defensively, but he's much more of a threat going forward.

Carroll hasn't done anything to be dropped, he caused the Swedish defense a lot of problems, and I think he and Rooney would work well. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see it be Rooney and Welbeck.

The above, however I'd play Welbeck with Rooney and bench crap hair.

Very much agree with this. Would highlight that Young went missing in the France game as well, let alone giving the ball away in dangerous areas vs Sweden. Think the Ox & Walcott would both do extremely well against Ukraine with their lightening pace & I'd stick with Carroll up top after that dominant performance. Managed to win 99% of everything in the air and was a real credit to the side.

Never been a big Milner fan though, and have no reason to change my mind. Very average and tends to tuck inside far too often.

Will be interesting to see with what team Hodgson does actually go with. Think he'll start with Young & Milner again with Rooney up top for Welbeck.

Agree with OP

Walcott for Milner. If we're using Milner for his defensive ability against Ukraine then we're being dangerously negative. Playing for a draw will be stupid, we need to go for a win. Theo's recent reputation for being good coming off the bench seems to have come entirely from yesterday's performance from the bench. In my opinion, he's in a different league to Milner altogether, and maybe if we'd have started him yesterday we would've put in four or five.

Rooney for Carroll. No apologies to Andy Carroll. Rooney is our best player and walks into the side no questions asked.

Young needs to put in a performance after going missing against Sweden, if he shows no sign of improvement get him off for the ox.

Rooney and Wellbeck both like to play deep, where as Carroll would be a natural targetman and offer something different.

I agree that Milner hasn't done much but he's there as Glen Johnson is great going forward but positionally suspect so JM is our insurance policy.

He has been disappointing but if you play Walcott in front of Glen Johnson you've got a serious defensive issue on the right hand side as Theo is not the kind of player to track back.

Hey! Considering the two players you've picked, you're going to have to find a different stick with which to beat Carroll. They've all got shit hair.

i agree with the foxes 2011 guy but i do disagree with rooney. He has been suspended and he should start as a substitute. Welback and carrol should start because although we only need a draw, we cant defend incase we let a goal in so we need to attack a little bit as well. I dont think we should rush rooney back into the squad though

Just because Milner is probably better defensively doesn't mean he never gets forward. He has put in some decent crosses this tournament.

Fizzled out in the 2nd half after he was sussed by the Swedish defence.

Rooney in for Carroll. That's all I'd change. Young has been poor but he is too good to be left out the team. Feel like he can knick a goal at some point.
