I used to have a Saturday job in a HAIRDRESSERS as a lad. I used to get paid in cash, should I have declared it?

Hate to break it to you. The cash wasn't for the work you did.

Don't hate me because I'm pretty. :(

I think me paying £224 tax last week when I worked my bollocks off doing stupid hours is morally wrong, only for some Jeremy Kyle viewer to live off it.

They never had it all though. Take comfort that some of it went to the South of France or into a Swiss bank account.

I resent that comment.

This!

If its morally wrong to take cash in hand jobs for working your arse off, then its at least ten worse morally wrong sitting on your arse all day claiming other peoples money.

Yes you are right, lets none of us pay taxes, ever, then we will have more money and all the scroungers can just die.

Missed the point abit there, I'm more than happy to pay taxes. I'm aware of the consequences if we didn't (ala Greece) but I don't like Mp's claiming its morally wrong to not put cash in hand jobs through the books when there are so many people claiming benefits, wrongly, just getting off scott free.

Maybe if everyone paid all their taxes, we would be able to afford a proper benefits means testing, and help rebuild the economy so that there are enough jobs for everyone to be able to work, not to mention improving education, and making it more affordable.

Your argument seems to be other people are profiting from the welfare state, so why can't I?

Why can't we all? Fvck it I've not submitted my tax return for last year yet, I might not bother now you have put it like that, what is a few grand to the government, but to me it is a lot, so should I keep it?

Except the ones we volunteer to donate too.

Perhaps a game/talent show for the scroungers to beg for support, we could call it

Drum Up Support,

Give me the Benefit,

Cash in Hand,

Put your money where my mouth is.

I understand and sympathise with your point, but you should get ready for a volley of overhyped abuse.

That would fit in far better with our present society.

I like it.

We can move onto the "running man" and "rollerball" scenarios after that.

Great entertainmant.

Do you really think the cash in hand jobs, if put through the books, would amas to better education, benefit means testing and a better economy?

I'm guessing it wouldn't improve a thing.

I'm not saying anyone shouldn't pay taxes, i'm aware that everybody has to, well nearly everybody, pay their way.

What i'm saying is that Mp's shouldn't be focusing on the workers just trying to do their best, they should be focusing on the 'scroungers' and the benefit cheats that are taking out so much more money out of the economy than the money lost from cash in hand jobs*

*purely speculating and just my opionion.

But those working cash in hand, are the same as benefit cheats, and scroungers, in fact a lot of benefit cheats are people who work cash in hand and still claim unemployment, and it is not just those at the bottom doing a bit of cash in hand for a bit of beer money, it is those in the middle fiddling their expenses, and those at the top squirrelling away billions to avoid paying tax. It is something that is endemic in all societies and is morally wrong, and justifying one by condemning the other is going to do nothing but exacerbate the situation.

Explain this to me, why is it ok for a tradesman to pay less in tax because he is fiddling the books than an office worker (who earns the same gross amount) who makes all his contributions through PAYE?

Your other argument seems to be that they should be focussing on "scroungers", well this is the same thing, it is just another branch of "scrounging", this is not to say that the government aren't looking at benefit reform, in fact they are and have already made a number of attempts at reforming the benefit system, I disagree with most of them, but that is not the point.

:chant: Touche! I'll admit when I have just been outclassed at something.

What was annoying me though, was the focus being put onto the tradesman rather than the 'scroungers' or benefit cheats. But I guess looking back at it the mega rich went through the tax legal loopholes in the media, the scroungers have had it with all the attempts at the reforms, so I guess its the working man's turn for some aggrevation from the Mp's.

To be fair to this Government, not something I enjoy doing, this is not really a policy or an initiative, it was just a response to a question, probably set-up to allow the answerer to be ridiculed for his immoral, tax dodging past.

The figures quoted is about 2 billion in lost revenue to the black economy every year, so it is a fair amount, but benefit fraud is, depending on which source you believe, costing the country 1.6 - 20 billion a year, whereas legal offshore banking practices and big business tax write offs is costing the UK a hell of a lot more.

The big issue here is lecturing people on morals when politicians show themselves to be morally bereft time and time again.

The problem with the Mega rich (individuals or companies) is that there is always somewhere else happy to take their tax money at a lower rate. Even removing the loopholes would reduce the overall tax take. Some argue that a lower tax rate and better enforcement is the answer, but I think generally life is happier if you accept that the published rate is a theoretical starting point, and the mechanisms used to reduce the effective rate are all there to incentivise certain things and to encourage business to operate and invest in the UK. People waste way to much time getting angry about nonsense figures the press bandy about without any understanding.

Thats the worst thing, I have yet to come across a morally right MP, the amount of hypocrisy running our country is unbelievable.

The "hell of a lot more" is theoretical, not achieveable.

Not acheivable by the UK acting alone, but a bit of global unity on this, we could close down the tax havens, get Switzerland to play ball and ensure that all tax is collected fairly, once everyone everywhere is paying the full and correct amount of tax then we can incentivise certain practices with tax breaks, because we will be able to afford them.

Right now a lot of big businesses are consolidating all their European financial centres into 1, normally based in Switzerland or another country with low taxes and funnelling all of the money taken in the rest of Europe through there to save millions in taxes, and in cutting staffing, closing down sales offices, distribution centres and manufacturing plants. With the technology we have now the only barriers to doing this are legal ones and they are not sufficient or water tight. I know this because I was recently involved in a project which cost about £100 million to implement, with the aim of saving a lot more than that in taxes.

Agree with that, the problem is the other alternative, if playing on our moral conscience doesn't work, is to get us to shop any tradesmen offering us cheaper rates for cash in hand work. A little financial incentive and I am sure a lot of people would rat out their neighbours, I wonder if this is where Cameron was going with the big society, Police and regulate yourselves, then we can cut the police further.
