Lincoln behind closed doors

Leicester City kept their pre-season preparations bang on track thanks to a late switch of venue.

Saturday's trip to Lincoln's Sincil Bank was postponed on the advice of Lincolnshire Police, due to public safety fears.

At the 11th hour, however, the match was rescheduled and played behind closed doors at the King Power Stadium, much to relief of City assistant manager Craig Shakespeare.

City beat their Football Conference rivals 5-0 but Shakespeare felt that game-time was far more important.

"All the work we'd done during the week had been building up to the game on Saturday," he said.

"We'd been planning towards who would need a full 90 minutes, who would need 75 and integratingplayers like Ben Marshall back into the fold, as he's been missing with illness.

"Had the game not gone ahead, it would have impacted on training in the early part of the coming week and possibly the Westerby Cup and Nuneaton games.

"The players were all pleased to get the game in – it was a very good exercise. The result is never too significant in these matches, but the players are gelling together nicely."

City hit the back of the net five times. Lloyd Dyer added to his goal at Burton last Wednesday with a couple, while David Nugent, Jamie Vardy and Andy King struck the others.

Unfortunately, City's fans were unable to see their team in action because of the late reshuffle, which meant it was impossible for the King Power Stadium doors to be opened due to safety regulations that need to be put in place.

Shakespeare said: "As much as we'd liked to have played in front of the fans, it was important we didn't disrupt the players' preparations.

"So we were extremely grateful to (Lincoln manager) Dave Holdsworth and his staff for bringing a team to the King Power Stadium at such short notice."

As well as Marshall's reintroduction to the fold, the strike partnership of Vardy and Nugent was given additional time to develop.

In addition, France under-20 winger Anthony Knockaert made his first appearance and set up the fifth goal.

A young City side is now expected to make the trip to Loughborough Dynamo tonight in the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA's annual Westerby Cup-Winners' Cup fixture (7.30pm kick-off).

It means, however, that there could be some experienced faces involved at Nuneaton Town tomorrow.

Pre-season concludes on Saturday, when former City boss Martin O'Neill brings Premier League side Sunderland to Filbert Way.

Shakespeare added: "We have two games in the early part of this week which will allow us to top up some of the players' fitness if we feel we need to, then the Sunderland game on Saturday."

"The Torquay (League Cup) and Peterborough (Championship) games are coming up on the horizon, so to stay on schedule was important.

"The players are getting fitter, looking sharper, building a real team ethic and gelling together."

Does anyone know, or can they please post the team that played? I would have thought either the OS or the Merc would have listed it, but sadly not. I can see that certain players played by reading above, but I can't see the full line up anywhere?
