Depends how attractive the dead bab....

I'll get my coat....

There's people in this thread which the above may be 'too soon' for.

The difference is, bad taste may offend, but it doesn't necessarily stir up hatred towards any given group.

Most ( if not all) racist and sexist jokes are just in bad taste and offensive rather than designed to stir up any form of hatred though .

i really can't remember any racist or sexist jokes that i've heard that even slightly comes close to being classed as hate speech , they nearly all fall into a category that pretty much resembles old "irish" jokes .

The point I wanted to make clearer though , was that Facebook could if it so desired, remove offensive content rather than wait for another excuse for heavy handed government intervention .( see Moosey and Darkon84 previous posts regarding this, posts 42 and 44 )

People have become absolutely obsessed by being offended by things in this day and age, some people need something to be outraged about something to get through day to day life.

The anger is totally false, it's pathetic.

I do think there's some truth in that. I think some people don't realise they don't have the right to never be offended. We shouldn't go around banning comments about x, y or z, just because somebody might be offended. I'm offended by religion, but I don't expect, or even want, anyone to ban it for me. I'm offended. So what? It's my problem, not the problem of the person who worships a god that they believe will burn me for all eternity just for not being gullible enough to believe the same nonsense.

Although the dead baby facebook page is tasteless, it is clearly labelled so you can avoid it if you know you won't like it, and as long as no-one is deliberately sending the jokes to people who they know will be upset by them, then I really can't see the problem with it.

I can't help thinking that MooseBreath might be right. I've no doubt that there will be people in power who will look to use this to their advantage and infringe on society's freedom of speech.

I think the big difference between "then" and this day and age is because in the past jokes were networked through friends and radio / tv. Radio/tv would never have allowed any form of controversial joke, although what is acceptable has changed and with friends you almost always knew them or their circumstances and therefore could make a decent judgement on what was acceptable.

Having a Facebook page clearly labelled should leave no one in any doubt as to its contents and can be avoided that is somewhat different to posting jokes of that ilk on a forum like this where the poster does not know other members circumstances and those members may feel they have a right to not have to come across that type of material.

Unfortunately some people aren't able to see the difference.

Check out the vile things this cnut is spewing about Gary Barlow's stillborn baby Poppy.

willy puller. :nono:

that is everything that is wrong with modern culture, he is doing it all for attention and we have given it to him, he is also supporting the tom daley twitter troll, he was probably inspired by the publicity he got.

The worst thing about it is not one of his comments were funny.

Dead baby jokes have never made me laugh. Probably because one of my cousins died at a very young age when I was about 5.

Some lad once told me a joke of that sort and I told him that if he's not careful who he told that joke to, or careful of where he shouted it out, he's likely to get his face stomped on by somebody.

He thought it was hilarious though and I don't think he understood a word I said!

A few years ago there was a Smith and Jones sketch on the TV. They were at a grave at a funeral. A woman in black was weeping and saying something like I wish I could be with him. Then somebody pushed her into the grave. I laughed at it the a few days later I had a phone call to say my brother and wife new born baby had passed away as a result of a cot death.

That sketch stuck in my mind and I thought why did I laugh at it? Saw the sketch again in the last year and I must admit I smiled at it.

At some point it is going to be bad timing for any joke for somebody. We just have to judge as best as we can and consider when and who we tell them to.

I may have been called up the same day or night about the cot death. I just know it was was not long after.

I felt guilty laughing at the sketch.

My Facebook and Twitter feeds regularly feature racist, and sexist, jokes. I appreciate them for what they are, ignorant and unfunny. I know they're not meant to cause, or stir up, any hatred. I don't jump up and down, screaming at the screen in front of me, because being an ignorant tool isn't illegal. It just means my opinion of the poster goes down, and makes me less inclined to read what they post.

I don't know if you've noticed, but not every racist, or sexist, or homophobic comment is prosecuted.

I appreciate our right to freedom of speech is qualified, but I would not like to see what can or cannot be said reduced further by a Nanny State. It's not that far off being told what to say or think, wouldn't you say?

Why is a racist or sexist joke automatically unfunny?

Anything can be funny if it's done properly.

Basically we agree , but I'd rather see sites such as Facebook be more self regulatory , rather than give the government busy bodies the excuse that they seem to be looking for to gain greater control of what is said . That's because they won't come out and admit what they really want to suppress , but will use this type of site as an excuse to tell us that we have demanded more censorship from them

Darkon84 and Moosey said it earlier in the thread , "problem_reaction_ solution" the age old tool for gaining greater control .

I remember a load of 'baby jokes' going around my senior school when I was a mere yoof.

I can't recollect I ever found one funny. When told to me I think I just thought 'weird' and 'do you really find that funny'?

People that do find such jokes funny have a strange sense of humour. IMO.

The ones I am subjected to are never, ever funny.

Fair enough, try Borat or Bruno, some fantastic clever humour in that which borders on both.

I'm completely against any state intervention on freedom of speech, but I think that Facebook, as a business, should do their bit to uphold some levels of decency on their website (as I'm sure they do, to some extent). As to what contravenes a level of decency is up for debate. I personally don't find jokes like this very funny and I suspect that most of those that do are fairly simple individuals.

Those who are offended by dead baby jokes would definitely be better off avoiding The Aristocrats.

For the uninitiated, the Aristocrats is a joke that has been doing the rounds in the US for decades and is considered the litmus test for, shall we say, risque comedy. There's no punchline as such, because the story itself is the laughing point with as many taboos broken as is humanly possible.

Enjoy a few examples.

Anyone who doesn't get this whole schtick doesn't get me - and I'm OK with that :D:cool:

The Gilbert Gottfried one had me crying when I listened to it, partly because I still have memories of him voicing the parrot from Aladdin.

Don't get all the attention it's getting. Looked at the site tonight for the first time and the jokes are crap. I don't find them offensive either which means double crap. The Facebook page is plagued by trolls. Sick of hearing about it to be honest. There are far bigger problems in the world

And Mrs Cooling then said....
