But James and Drinkwater keep/hold the ball better than Danns.

I agree, they do, and are probably better suited to our current game plan. But you don't always need what they offer, there really isn't much point keeping the ball in the last 10 minutes if you need a goal. At that point it may be a good idea to bring someone on who gives the ball away a bit but does at least force the issue by going at the opposition, I don't imagine James or Drinkwater doing that to the same effect that Danns could.
