You are 22.

Your life is ahead of you like a great big glorious pie, waiting to be plunged into...

(OK if you are from the Monsell/Glen Parva, maybe three quarters of your life is behind you :P )

If you are undecided, I would suggest that you bugger off abroad, work your way around, "find" yourself, learn a couple of languages and come back ready to enter the employment market with some great stuff to put on your CV and not a few interesting scars, sexual diseases and tales for the pub...

Good luck!

Get into something, take up something you're interested in. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I left school, just something IT-related, so I went to college and studied IT. The course covered all aspects of IT, but I really got interested in web design. Started trying it at home, slowly got better with it, and here I am now studying it at uni.

Good luck with everything, you are still young (older than me though :P).

I wish I had something to work towards too. Work in retail at the mo and it's alright but nobody wants to be in retail their whole life.

Always fancied being a primary school teacher, always been told I'm great with kids but the amount of work involved in actually getting there puts me off lol

some people seem to know what they want to do & then there are people like you & me who haven't got a clue.

Once I realised that I was never going to be playing centre forward for Leicester City & England, I found myself at a bit of a loss. Of course it would be great to find something you want to do for the rest of your life, but quite often it's about getting yourself out there doing anything that pays the bills & being in the right place at the right time. You might have to show a bit of application........it's not going to fall in your lap.

I didn't know what I wanted to do. I went to college & got myself enough qualifications to get into university. Always enjoyed history & studied it at Sheffield University. Some of the best times of my life & a great experience. Thought about teacher training, but still wasn't sure what I wanted to do. Became an account manager for Royal Mail. Reasonable money, but dull as dishwater. I was effectively made redundant & felt a bit lost. Twatted about doing just about anything that was going. Heard of a job working through the summer as a gardener with my local council. Took a chance & it's probably the best thing that's ever happened to me!!

10 years later, I'm a self-employed gardener & I love every minute of it. Out in the community, chatting with my customers, working hard, keeping fit........& a decent tan is a bonus!!

I bump into friends I haven't seen for years & when I tell them I'm a gardener they sometimes say "but didn't you go to university?". What's that got to do with anything?

Do whatever makes you happy & enjoy the ride!!

I'm 25 soon to be 26. Just passed 8 years in my first and only full time job as a battery technician. Interested in electronics so I took a job in it aged 17 and have progressed within the same company since that age. In January I start a new job with a new company as a therapy technician which basically means I shall be repairing/maintaining/cleaning and supplying hospital beds and matteresses. Still electronics based with a little more focus on customer service, field based rather than work bench based and I get to be my own boss planning my own days/weeks. Can't wait to get started

45 years in work and I'm finally doing something that I enjoy. No, it's not being unemployed. I do a bit of volunteering for a media magazine. Have a chance of a part-time editor job. Never saw myself as doing it before but when I was younger the opportunity for this tiype of work wasn't out there. When I was at school it was a secondary Modern so only the top two forms took GSCE's Did 4 months at Abbey Park but by mutual agreement it was decided it wasn't for me. 30 years at one place in the hosiery followed. Never thought about trying something else. Redundancy forced me to try Security for seven years until the last company went up the spout. Then I found myself with not much of a trade or qualifications and at an akward age for being taken on. So to fill the time I did an IT course, an office skills course, Food Hygiene course and Journalism. A few years late to find what I want to do but I have no regrets and happy doing what I am doing.

Hopefully it won't take you as long as me to find your perfect job. Find what motivates you and go for it.

I'm 31 still don't know what I want to do with my life, had 2 main careers since leaving uni, IT and teaching English abroad both satisfying and frustrating in equal measures.

My advice to you is take every opportunity you can, whether it is, as someone up there said, doing a bit of gardening, going to another country, taking a temp job, or volunteering you may not instantly find what you are looking for, but the more places you look the better chance you have of stumbling across, it is what happened with me and my IT career, and whilst it doesn't tick every box, I am able to get out of bed every morning.

DNO are looking for volunteer news reporters. Or anything to do with internet, radio and promotion would help also.

We are hoping that after about a year if the lottery funding stops we can carry on on our own.

Life is strange how it pans out.

A couple of years ago, things went a bit wrong in my personal life and I lost job as a sign maker when I got the sack. Believe me, when I left school, sign making wasn't high on my list of career choices. I had no idea what to do after that.

Ended up applying for a tiny advert in the paper just to fill out my dole book and got a telesales job in town which was very well paid.

Joined a gym, hired a PT, ended up enjoying getting fit, and on my PT's advice and with their help - eventually became one myself with the plan of taking over the gym in a couple of years.

Now - literally 12 months after I started (to the day no less) I am the assistant general manager of my hometown club. On a salary and use my PT as a second income stream. The plan has fallen together nicely and I'm very lucky but have also had to work hard.

My point is that you just never know what opportunities will come your way - 5 yeas ago did I see myself in a management position? Of a bloody gym no less? Not a fvcking chance. But I absolutely love it and most days work many hours over time because I simply enjoy it and very much becoming a "company man". It was a huge gamble and at times, finding my feet in the fitness world has been hard both physically (working literally 20hrs per day sometimes) and financially. But now it has come full circle. My aim now is in two years time to let the General Manager to move on and for me to take his seat as Guv'nor.

Keep your eyes open and make sure that you don't miss the opportunity to be a success because it can appear in the strangest way.

I've enrolled in an online Business Admin course to hopefully increase my chance of a job. Got my CV professionally re-written so thats a bonus too, now we wait.

Ah, surprisingly, Lamby actually raises an decent point here - when you do decide what you're going to do make sure tour CV is shit hot. When applying for my current position I spent a full week completely re-writing my CV and covering letter.

One of my first tasks since my promotion is to hire my replacement. An I have a stack of CVs to read through. Most of them look as if they are a complete after thought with bad spelling, some don't even have phone numbers on them! One was 4 pages long but had massive A5 page sized gaps in it!

At first I was reading them all giving every one a fair chance - this took far too long, now if it doesn't even have the basics or I can't find the key information I need in about 10 seconds it gets put in the round filing cabinet under my desk. Not sure if I would pay for somebody to write it for me, just make sure it looks the dogs bollocks.

I got mine re-done for free by a career coach, might get her to write me a cover letter since my one is pretty pathetic.

Have you got my CV yet Andy? Like you said I apply jobs to fill my search book in. Not my fault if the employer thinks I don't suit the job. Although I must say my CV is not too bad. I doubt I'd be any good as a PT though. I am not physically built for it. Misplaced hip from birth which I only found about over the past year but my fitness, running etc has always been poor. Never held me back doing other things. I've done charity walks but do not run them so finish well behind the others.

Doing volunteer work at British Heart Foundation shop. Think I'm being groomed to do the telephone answering. Never thought of doing that. More to it than I thought. List of questions to ask the caller then filing. Interesting though.

Anyway it's surprising sometimes what you find you can do so your ideal job may be something you have not thought of doing.

Blue Andy is a good example. Well done to him.

I just make most of mine up ;) Tbf I do apply for jobs/apprenticeships but just not some of the ones I put down

I fill my card up. They are less likely to read it. Used to be honest and put 'nothing suitable' but I was sanctioned when I did not apply for a job someone behind the counter printed off to go for and I thought no way I am going to get that job (it was at a young offenders prison,.) and they said that is not a good enough excuse. So now I annoy recruiters by applying for jobs and let them file my CV in the shredder.

I get told to do around 10-14 every 2 weeks so I only do that much. I once got a month sanction for not applying for a job they printed off that was 55 hours a week that didn't even have any contact details for the company on.

They once even sanctioned me for 12 weeks and then "lost" my appeal, bunch of wankers they all are.

So many excuses. There's always a million reasons not to do something. Just get out there, it's hard to be picky when you've been unemployed for years.

I'm trying, its the fact that everywhere wants experience nowdays, if I can get a foot in the door somewhere that'll be a help.

It's Christmas, they'll hire any old donkey at this time of year for a bit. Saying that you're probably a bit late for temp jobs now, they're usually sorted in October.

There's a lot of snobbery around unemployment, if you look hard enough you'll find something, so long as your expectations aren't ridiculous.

The comment about youth offenders is exactly what I'm talking about, people would kill for that job but you didn't even bother, £45 a week on JSA really that much fun?

Dont worry about the future..or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra problem by chewing bubblegum.
