It's written into the constitution so it's gonna take some shifting .

Can't see it changing much in the near future and in many ways it would be closing the stable door after the horse has bolted .

It's shutting the stable door after some horses have bolted. Many more horses will bolt unless the door is shut soon.

You can make amendments to the constitution, there are dozens of them. The constitution argument is a load of horse shit.

You know they had a ban on assault weapons before right? It is very possible. Reagan supported it last time - a life long NRA member.

What gets me is the type of guns that can be bought and owned. I can understand to some extend hand guns and revolver being kept in the home, but assault rifles and and automatic weapons that fire off 100 in a few seconds? They are hardly going to be used for hunting or for a dear old lady alone at night that she keeps by her bedside.

The assault rifles were banned for 10 years but the ban was not renewed. Why not make it permanent?

It seems so easy for Americans to obtain weapons but I'm sure it's harder than us Brits think. Not sure if it's like the films (Arnie comes to mind) where one can walk in a shop buy a gun and ammunition, load it then rob the shop or nip next door to the bank and rob them.

Yeah that is where I got the Freedom line from.

It really is that easy in some states.

Michael Moore's finest moment was bowling for columbine.

According to that at least 31 school shootings since columbine.

That is just terrifying.

Waits for rock music and video games to be blamed.

How many school shootings have we had since Dunblane?

The Americans just don't get it. There are myriad issues which lead to incidents like this, but a reduction in gun ownership will reduce gun crime or at the very least help to prevent incidents like this happening.

It really is that easy in some states.

That is the first thing they must do, make gun law the same across all states, and all states must make minimum checks. Guns and ammo to only be sold in licensed gun shops, and shop owners can lose their license if they don't comply to rules and perform required checks.

Don't know if that is the case in any states at the moment.

Do they have licenses or a register for guns in the US? Does NRA membership count as a license to buy guns?

Stunned. Was catching up on the news on my phone while waiting to meet someone earlier and after reading about it and some of the comments on some forums I felt physically ill. I genuinely can't even begin to comprehend the aftermath of it and the complete devastation that some poor people will be in currently. The fact that this took place at a Primary (Elementary) school clinches it and ups the shock value for me, possibly why this felt more real and disturbing than other similar events in the past years.

Absolutely horrific news and I can't even imagine what some of these families have gone through and the effect this will have on hundreds of children, teachers and parents as well as a whole community. They'll need a whole lot of strength to get through this.

Terrible, just terrible.

Like a few have said though, let's not blame a whole group of people on the actions of a small minority.

RIP to those who died.

It's a dark day for americans everywhere.

You shouldn't need to worry about sending your child to school and them getting gunned down by a ****ing nutter!

It's a very strange situation with America, it's a complete clash of culture to our own.

Here we see the gun as a weapon, we always have and always will, in the US they see it a mechanism of self defence despite everything we see, it's pretty hard to change that given how far woven into the fabric of society it actually is.

The gun laws won't be changed, but what drives the people to do it? No one can really get that as every single person who has committed these types of offences in the past from Columbine to Virginia Tech has had a decent upbringing, good schooling, generally live in affluent areas. It's bizarre, really is.

I know it sounds daft but this doesnt really happen anywhere else, we had one at Dunblane I know but maybe for some reason or another the US just seems to produce these sorts, tragic, really tragic and I don't see an end to it any time soon.

It is their culture, Started with the settlers, then they had fights over land gold and injuns. The Civil war the Wild West where most men carried a sidearm or rifle. Even the outlaws were seen as heroes. Then you had the mobsters from the 20's onwards. Mafia gang warfare. Bonnie and Clyde who were also given hero status by some despite just being cold bloodied killers.

Just watched Claude Van Dam in Hard Target. That glorified the use of guns. Indiscriminate firing of guns of all types. They just appeared from nowhere.

There was a piece on Newsnight and one person with a newspaper said depite Obama looking emotionally touched when making a speech he cannot see any change happening. I agree. I cannot see people willingly handing over guns they have had in the house for years.

Where this happened was a quiet community based town where it was thought the last place it could happen and it was rare to see a gun. They spoke to a hairdresser who had cut the hairs of many children in the town. She said they came to her for their first cut so had seen them grow up. One mother said it was a certainty that she would know parents of some of the victims.

Mike Huckabee:

"We ask why there is violence in our schools but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?"

Not only is it far less likely that such a multiple murder will happen here, it is also far less likely that some shit for brains politician will bring his deity crashing into discussion of the matter.

It doesn't fill me with hope for the future of the Land of the Free.

What an absolute glans.

It's genuinely scary to see politicians as thick and insensitive in positions of influence. No surprise really though, he is employed by Fox News.

Just found this gem of a quote on twitter : "Teachers should be trained and armed as well with bullet proof vests. How many more schools have to be shot up in order for this to happen"

A gun to the head is just the kind of incentive kids need to hand their homework in on time.

I've no idea how the gun lobby are so powerful given how monumentally stupid the majority seem to be.

Bullshit man. They have blood on their hands. Everyone who defends their rights to own assault rifles shares responsibilty for this.

Why would anyone not in a war zone need an assault rifle for self-defence?
