Later this became (more) famous through Luther Vandross's version and I'd like to say this is what I listened to first. But the fact is the first time I was aware of the song was through the classic film House Party.

I wasn't aware Vandrross covered this. I know of the George Michael & Mary J Blige cover version, did Vandross cover it before them?

Nah mate, the Always and Forever was the cover for Vandross. Though I do actually like that George Michael and Blige cover (granted I'm biased as I love pretty much everything Blige does).
