Wycombe Fox Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20958659 Sad news for a company originating from Leicester.
Zingari Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 very bad news i remember when it was just a little shop next to the princess charlotte pub
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 I can see a future when all we have are superstores and warehouses. People will just sit at keyboards ordering stuff or driving to retail parks. Social interaction will only take place via forums and chatrooms, except when people meet for sexoramas and Sandmen will hunt you down when you turn 30.
Webbo Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 It's a lot to do with state of the art digital cameras being on everyone's phones. Actual cameras now are only for enthusiasts. Should really have diversified a bit.

MooseBreath Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Either diversified or worked harder to build a strong online presence. I don't even know for sure if they have a website. I mean I'm sure they do, but the fact I don't know it instantly tells you all you need to know about why they have failed. Same with comet, hmv etc.
goose2010 Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 My bro works at head office in Leicester, isn't looking good apparently.

Get your facts right before you speak. You type in 'camera' Jessops is the first website on google, same with digital camera and SLR. The likes of asda and telco are killing the high street as they just undercut people.
MikeyT Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 It's a shame too as whenever I have been in there in the past, the assistants were all very knowledgeable and knew what they were talking about when asked a question. I went in not long ago asking about Neutral Density Filters as I hadn't much experience using them and the guy I spoke to couldn't have been nicer, and knew what he was talking about too. If they definitely vanish from our street, there will be nowhere in Leicester that specialises in photography equipment at all as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Is Youngs still around? (I suspect not.)
MikeyT Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Is Youngs still around? (I suspect not.) Ah yeah forgot about them!! Think they're still around.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Ah yeah forgot about them!! Think they're still around. Nope - they're not. From 2010... The oldest high street business in Leicester has closed down Though a quick search reveals Jacobs are still next door to the train station - thought they'd gone years ago.
Libertine Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 My bro works at head office in Leicester, isn't looking good apparently. As does my Ma. Great start to the year.

Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Hmm, I googled "Camera shops leicester" and got Jacobs, Jessops and Youngs as my top three returns - further non-google based reseach revealed they've all gone out of business in the past 2 years. Maybe it's because they paid their taxes, eh Google? Useless search engine.
breadandcheese Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Sad news about Jessops, but I guess once Jacobs had gone, it was only a matter of time that Jessops went for the very same reasons as Jacobs. It's not anything that either retailer did wrong, just a declining marketplace with the advent of smartphones and a dwindling customer-base.

I think I told you about Mike Browne, he did an excellent YouTube video on their uses
Smudge Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 I'm afraid it's the way of the world with specialty shops. I struggled to keep my store open that sold hi-end audio/video products. We closed the store and now work out of an industrial unit. We concentrate on custom install and by appointment only demos. Having a retail store, sales staff and cash tied up in demonstration equipment is a killer.

The time to make these decisions for the likes of Jessops has probably long gone.

All you say is true and I should have done it sooner. Hard call laying off people who have been with you for years, fortunately he went back to the industry he used to be in and is earning again.
Mack Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Retail is going through it's biggest revolution in living memory, photography is also. Stand still at your peril, because even the old duffers are on line now, and if you are not at the front diversifying and making sure you are selling the popular products at a competitive price you are done.
acooling08 Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Sad but inevitable. I remember as a young kid going into Leicester on a Saturday with my parents, we would sometimes go in so my mum could get her photos printed. Of course now she has a digital camera and just uploads them straight onto the computer.
notnow john Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Bought my last two cameras from them, because of their product knowledge and after sales service. The problem is punters get the info and advice from trained staff, then buy the item off amazon for a few quid less.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Shite news. I think (hope) the Leicester store may stay open if others are shutting. If it does go, I'll have no shop to actually go in and have a play. I've bought 2 lenses from them in the last 3 weeks. Saying that, they couldn't compete with where I've just bought a new body from (grey).
