Webbo Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 http://news.sky.com/story/1047226/football-match-fixing-ring-smashed A criminal ring suspected of fixing 380 matches, including World Cup qualifying games, has been smashed by police in Europe. The matches also included European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League games and some top flight league matches. Europol head Rob Wainwright said the investigation had identified about 425 corrupt officials, players and serious criminals in 15 countries. It had uncovered "match fixing activity on a scale we have not seen before", he said. Most of the allegedly fixed matches were played in Turkish, German and Swiss championships, but other matches around the world are also concerned. Criminals from Asia also participated in the match fixing and some of the fixed matches took place outside Europe. The probe uncovered 8m euros (£6.9m) in betting profits and 2m euros in bribes to players and officials and has already led to several prosecutions. Mr Wainwright said the involvement of organised crime "highlights a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe". It was not immediately clear how many of the matches mentioned have been revealed in previous match fixing investigations at a national level in countries including Germany and Italy. At a news conference in The Hague, Europol showed television coverage of a suspect match, an international between Argentina and Bolivia, during which a Hungarian referee awards a highly dubious penalty.
pSinatra Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Any mention of any Leicester games? Could explain a few refereeing decisions
MC Prussian Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Swiss matches? Not the first time we've been in the spotlight. Similar cases were reported in late 2009 and early 2012.
Father Ted Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Apparently a Champions League game played in England within the last 3/4 years is one of the matches...
kylestyle06 Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Yann Kermorgant - Penalty miss at Cardiff Gavin Ward - explain the terrible decisions that were made a few years back? You didn't have to play football to realize that he couldn't referee in that game!
Ashley Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Apparently a Champions League game played in England within the last 3/4 years is one of the matches... Tottenham v Inter Milan maybe? Italian side and all that.
Uncle Albert Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Chelsea v Barcelona, where Chelsea were denied all them penalties then Iniesta scored the vital goal in the last minute..
J.Lisemore Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Amkar Perm v Anzhi Makhachkala - Bookies had Anzhi to win at 1/3 in the last 5 minutes, watched the live stream myself...opposition player directly passes (bearing in mind this is the last minute of the game) to an Anzhi player and bang. With it being an obvious fix, it was embarrassing to hear both teams deny it.
Lamby Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Bet it was Inter v Torino the other day too, shocking defending from both teams
Guest BlueBrett Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Someone should really fix a few ACON matches to make them remotely interesting
kylestyle06 Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Bet it was Inter v Torino the other day too, shocking defending from both teams I don't think they've been dealing with cases from a couple of days ago. By the looks of things it's been an ongoing investigation to matches played within the last few years.
BoneDog Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 This is why the FA won't implement technology to help with major decisions like red cards, offside goals etc. The FA and officials are as bent as the curly bit on a trombone. That's all conjecture on my part.
The Doctor Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 This is why the FA won't implement technology to help with major decisions like red cards, offside goals etc. The FA and officials are as bent as the curly bit on a trombone. That's all conjecture on my part. The FA can't really as far as I'm aware, their hands are tied by Blatter and his cronies on the technology aspect.

That's all conjecture on my part. The FA can't introduce anything like that without the approval of FIFA, they are no longer a powerhouse in world football.
Tom17LCFC Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Very interested to find out which CL game in England it was, I can think of a few potential ones off the top of my head.
MooseBreath Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 This is why the FA won't implement technology to help with major decisions like red cards, offside goals etc. The FA and officials are as bent as the curly bit on a trombone. That's all conjecture on my part. For once I almost agree with you. I've long suspected that corrupt referees are commonplace. The idea that FIFA might be holding back technology because they know that it will call time on intentionally bad refereeing is one that makes a lot of sense. Anyway, I'm sure it'll all come out eventually. You can't keep a lid on the level of referee corruption that i suspect exists forever.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 How long til someone voices the old 'we need to pay our refs more to stop them from being crooked wankers' argument that is so popular when talking about politicians?
Father Ted Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 I would assume the Champions League game may well have already been a dead rubber perhaps... I read an article about how games in the Euros were often fixed, for example between countries like Malta and Andorra where there's nothing to play for, likely to go unnoticed, decent betting odds and lots of money to be made for players who earn next to nothing out of the game anyway. Makes sense.
BoneDog Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 The FA can't really as far as I'm aware, their hands are tied by Blatter and his cronies on the technology aspect. The FA can't introduce anything like that without the approval of FIFA, they are no longer a powerhouse in world football. Good point. Scrub the FA and change it to 'FIFA and some officials'. That said, I'm not saying that nobody at the FA is a corrupt shit. For once? I always thought we were like two peas in a pod. Turns out I was wrong I'm not sure it'll all come out. There'll probably be a few scapegoats, but the people behind it all will carry on as usual I reckon. They're very naughty boys.
BoneDog Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 I'm not a fan of match fixing in the slightest, but I wish somebody would give me a nudge and a wink now and again, especially around Dec 20th. I like money. Share the love. That said, I'd prefer that they all get locked up and bugger off out of it.
Ashley Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 Lyon 7-1 Dinamo Zagreb. Fix all day long. Lyon needed a stupid goals turn around of 5/6 it happened.
Yojoe36 Posted 4 February 2013 Posted 4 February 2013 I bet this is a load of rubbish. I see what you did there
